The Ward (Downside Book 2)
The Ward (Downside Book 2)
Price: £2.84

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining horror that makes you think, 18 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had previously read The Mall, written by the same writer. While The Mall was really slow to get going, this novel throws the characters in to peril quite early on.

Both The Mall and The Ward are a dark observation and satire of the western culture, of obsession with shopping, trends and beauty, and the length people will go or how we're enslaved to it.

The Ward concentrates on the beauty aspect, delving in to plastic surgery and the horrific price that people are willing to pay to achieve that perfect look. And what exactly is considered beautiful?

I enjoyed this book, it created creepy and strange environments well, though nothing new if you're use to horror.

But the monsters are quite unique, and they keep you reading on. They are what we could be if there were no limits or restraint.

There are formatting issues but that doesn't bother me.

Overall, it's an entertaining horror that makes you contemplate the western culture.

This review is from: Me Before You (Paperback)
An unconventional love story...

Actually, once you get passed the whole disabled thing, Will is the fantasy, rich, cold, handsome and sarcastic love interest lots of romance heroine falls for.

As for Lou, she's likeable enough, but she's the usual kooky character that you normally find playing the romantic lead. The one most rich, cold men in these romances end up falling for.

So really, the story is quite conventional.

But despite the two main characters fitting roles we're use to seeing, they do bring a freshness to the roles.

Once I was introduced to the characters and story, I thought there were two possible outcomes to this story, and turns out, one of my guess was correct.

There is a certain feel this story emits and it makes it predictable. It wants your emotions, and you become prepared for the story to try and take it in any way possible.

It explores the feelings of self-worth. It's approach, however, when it comes to Will, has caused much debate in the disabled community. I think the author just wanted to tell a story, from a person that has that kind of attitude and outlook. I don't think there's a big message behind it.

I like most when Lou and Will are interacting, but some scenes just fly by with the author telling us how much fun they had. I feel cheated with these scenes, it's like watching them from afar. You're being told they're connecting, instead of showing.

And maybe that's part of the reason that I don't feel like their relationship is as strong as the writer wants us to believe it is.

I would have like to have seen more scenes where they're connecting and getting through to one another.

We see from quite a few characters point of view, and I would have like to seen from Will's side.

Still, though there are flaws, I enjoyed the read.

The girl on the train by Paula Hawkins
Genre - Thriller, Crime, Mystery
Story 3 out 5
Entertainment 3 star out 5

Lets get this point out there first -

If you're looking for a novel where the main character is a relatable, strong and great role model, this isn't the book for you. None of the characters are people you want to look up to, they are all heavily flawed.

When this novel was marketed and advertised, there were claims that this was the new "Gone Girl" and that fans of that book would love this book.

Well, I only like this book.

There are no similarities, none of the characters have the complexity of Amy's character or the charm of the resilient but heavily flawed Nick.

There's no real layers or depth to this book.

So what does this book have?

An entertaining story that's on par with any TV soap drama storyline, which can sometimes be good but trashy as well.

Rachel is an alcoholic mess, who spends a lot of time on trains, pretending she's commuting to and from a job she's lost. She doesn't really know you or anything as the slogan on the cover lets you believe. She just happens to notice something unusual from her usual view while looking out the train's window.

Something that causes her to go to the police, who of course don't believe her, so it leaves it up to her to get to the bottom of things.

She's no super detective, she's bumbling along looking for the truth, while leaving a trail of puke behind her. Sometimes, causing more harm than good.

The characters she encounters are all flawed and they've either had or are having an affair or were the other man or woman.

The writer throws out quite a few suspects and red herrings, but well, I've come to know, that usually the real culprit is the one the writer isn't pushing quite as hard as the others as vying for the role of bad person for the "surprise" twist.

So, you can say, that the ending was predictable.

Still, there was something that kept me reading, partly because I do enjoy reading about characters that are crawling around in the gutter and aren't people you inspire to be. And there was a moment, where being a newly parent myself, helped me feel for a character.

So is this the book for you?

If you can still enjoy reading a novel where the main character is weak and messy, and it doesn't get you into a rage that the writer hasn't written a strong character, then, possibly, you might like this.

I found it enjoyable but it doesn't hold any place near the top of my great reads.

If like me and you've read, played and seen plenty of horror stories, there is nothing new here. It's all quite predictable and there are no surprises or real scares.

The writing flows well and the stories are easy to digest and partly entertaining.

Still, there's nothing new for an experienced horror fan.
