The Black Rose
The Black Rose

5.0 out of 5 stars Roses smell so sweet..., 7 July 2014
This review is from: The Black Rose (Paperback)
Sent: 09 July 2014 12:59:48

On a French island,in the time of the Fourteenth Black Rose Slave, the beautiful teenage Rosamund will be subjected to a gamut of carnal delights and terrors, the barriers of the pain/pleasure principle torn asunder by the Duke and his four sons (one of whom, named Firebird, she will fall desperately in love with),in an attempt to create a rare flower, the Black Rose, the elixir of
which the Duke fervently hopes will destroy all boundaries of prudery and inhibition in the world, creating a time of unfettered
pleasure,a lack of bondage and guilt - a polymorphously perverse world of happiness and excess.
I first read Josephine Jarmaine's extraordinary novel THE BLACK ROSE on it's initial release in 1997,and having just read it
again for this review, the sheer weight of it's ambition in a slim volume continues to we have a story that genuinely
runs the gamut of every sort of graphic carnal activity, and then some, and yet does so with a clear-eyed,non-judgemental
clarity that positively takes the breath away, coupled (no pun intended) with a vivid imagination woven into the erotic fabric
and wonderfully descriptive sentences; a tenderness for the plight of it's glowing central character Rosamund, who slowly but
surely goes along with every indignity and lust hurled at her, hurling it right back,a kind of sexual martyrdom, because she
comes to believe in the Duke's plan, that through her suffering and her joy,the creation of the titular rose and it's elixir will
transform the world into a better place. Hanging above whatever location she is in,and whatever is happening to her,an upturned
glass jar captures the essence of the scene and the emotions, and by alchemy will be used to breed the dark flower which will be planted to grow in the Duke's mammoth,flower-filled garden. So heady is the writing, that I swear you can almost
stop and smell the roses, hear the cries, touch the draperies and the glass, the plot moving towards it's deeply moving final
chapter where she will have to make a heartbreaking choice to continue or...but ahh, that would be telling..
Written in a fluid, hypnotic style,it weaves it's dark magic around the reader from the first few lines; no barriers, every time you
think it can't push further it does, unwavering in it's "adult innocence",and with beautiful phrases around each corner ( the Litany of the Rose is a thing of utter beauty, that in 17 lines explains the basis for everything that has happened,an alternative set of Commandments for this rich world).
Soon to be available on Kindle,I can only urge mature readers to seek out this small, dark jewel of a book and wallow in it's
excesses,it's style and it's rhythmic power. One thing is for sure, the Marquis de Sade would have truly adored this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars WITCHES,BURNING...BRIGHTLY., 26 Nov. 2013
This review is from: WITCHES BURNING (Kindle Edition)
Back in the land of Taratamia,Captain Tallis and his beloved, the beautiful Lilene, face further danger, devilry and intrigue...
rumbling below ground, vanquished demons, the witch Malkar and the evil Zairopo thrash, quarrel and burn, rising through ground and ether to inflict immolation/death and wizardry..other forces conspire to tear Tallis and his beloved apart, and dark dreams of past loves are haunting the brave Captain, torn away by authority, and much danger will ensue to restore peace and harmony and reunite the golden lovers.
Yes,brilliant author Rosemary Hawley Jarman takes us back to this imagined land which feels as real as anything in this stunning sequel to her novel THE CAPTAIN'S WITCH. Beautifully wrought in lush prose, intense dialogue, brimming with character, danger, heady eroticism, threatening scenes of horror mingling with moments of beauty and dark wit (one page just has a single word on it to launch you into the climax),I cannot recommend this tome enough. Astoundingly this sequel works as a stand-alone work, filling in enough details on the adventures of the character's from the previous volume to make the reading easy,so don't be put off, however, can only recommend you catch up with the first novel before attacking this.
Long established as a great writer of historical novels (her classic debut WE SPEAK NO TREASON remains a high watermark in this genre),Rosemary Jarman's move in recent years into this great world of fantasy fiction writing retains all the emotional intensity of character, events, life, death, greed, love, beauty and horror that you could hope for, forging into lavish new can only wonder what her next work will be,and revel in this one in the meantime.
An A++ recommendation,do not miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD RELEASE OF THE YEAR!, 25 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Finally granted a release after too long in limbo, director Saxon Logan's sublime SLEEPWALKER hits dvd courtesy of the BFI
in a dazzling,all-singing-and-dancing edition.
Packed with extras, including two witty, earlier shorts from Saxon,as well as a great feature length interview with the man
that is both enlightening and deeply moving, this gem of a movie,a 50 minute masterpiece, could best be described as "Mike Leigh
meets a Nightmare on Thatcher St via Italain giallos" (all will become clear when you watch it).
I was fortunate enough a decade ago to meet with Saxon on a number of occasions and see this tremendous prize winner at the
Berlin film festival play to appreciative audiences as it should have done back in the 80's - especially at the Festival of
Fantastic Films in Manchester - and so it is a real treat that this much neglected film of it's era, stupidly denied a release
in the UK,finally has it's day,and emerges blinking into the light, more relevant than ever!
Funny, scary, politically charged, stylistically beautiful, please do yourself a favour and buy this dvd and tell all your friends,
the wait is over..

1.0 out of 5 stars THE END OF DARIO!, 22 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dracula Di Dario Argento (DVD)
Very sad to see a once hugely impressive director of the horror genre descend to this appallingly acted slop,
without question his worst effort (beating even the dreadful THE CARD PLAYER),and probably the worst filmic
version of the famous tale I have ever seen..woeful script, appalling CGI backdrops and effects,Rutger Hauer turning up for
the last 20 minutes to phone in a terrible reading of Van Helsing, what can I say except - avoid!? The days of SUSPIRIA and INFERNO are a long way behind Dario now!

4.0 out of 5 stars THE FULL PLANT!, 2 July 2013

Simply great after all these years to see the version of the film they wanted to put out, complete with spectacular, very black and very apocalyptic ending..if you are a fan of the original film,do not miss a chance to get this Director's Cut and marvel at what the makers originally intended but stupid "focus groups" with selected viewers's dumb opinions tried to ruin! An essential purchase!

Super, hugely undervalued 70's gem starring Frankie Howerd and Ray Milland, extremely funny, often scary, and quite overlooked - saw this at the cinema back in the 70's and it has aged remarkably well, some truly priceless lines and scenes,a great movie finally making it's debut on dvd- buy this thing before it vanishes!

This review is from: Antiviral [DVD] (DVD)
Stunning, perverse, brilliant first feature from Brandon Cronenberg, son of David, and you can certainly tell where the genes have fallen from the tree here!
Wickedly clever tale of the ultimate in fan worship, with people queueing up at a shady organisation to be infected with diseases their favourite celebrities have been struck down with,
and the young agent at the centre of it smuggling these diseases out in his own body to sell to
dark rival organisations..needless to say things go slightly pear-shaped!
Augurs great things for the future from Cronenberg Jr!

1.0 out of 5 stars PAUSE BUTTON!, 3 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Company delivered dvd player within 24 hours - great.
Player plays dvd's in an interesting way,by pausing/jumping sometimes every couple of
minutes! Only had player 2 weeks and trying to get the seller to accept the fact that
I'm not making it up,the player is faulty, and accept it back for either a refund or a
replacement which I'm currently finding it hard to do - ongoing....
After buying found a few other reviews from buyers about this player saying the same
thing - "why does the picture keep freezing??!"
