Caesar
Caesar

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Just perfect, 12 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Caesar (Paperback)
I don't know why this isn't more widely acclaimed. Reading this I was looking through Brutus's eyes, I was back in ancient Rome. The author conveys the mindset of the time; acting decisively is not a choice in this world it is a must. The modern mind comes across as a pampered blob in comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideas that resonate. A complex and brilliant book about what is to be human., 17 Sept. 2015
Deckard is embarrassed by the fact he can’t afford a real sheep, this shame constantly wears him down living as he does in fear that his neighbours will find out. From this everyday start the book fractures and splinters into ever more exotic scenarios. One thing that needs to be made clear is that the book is not like the film. The film merely took the brilliant concept of a bounty hunter that has to track down and ‘retire’ androids that are almost indistinguishable from humans. This premise is also the centre of the book however there are a several other big ideas that the film entirely bypasses. For one how fantastical living creatures are considered to be now that they have been wiped from the face of the earth save a few which can be bought and sold for huge amounts of money. One of the standout scenes is when a spider is discovered in the dust. Hopefully this book will help some see what is being lost as we sell the natural world in order to make ‘kipple’. Dick so was so far ahead of his time with this book it just stuns you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can your mind take it?, 4 April 2015
Another film that cements Nolan as THE director of our time. Some reviewers say the ending is absurd, I’d say suspend your critical eye for a moment and just enjoy it. It’s surely fantastical but at the extreme limits if physics what else could it be? If you still have problems with the ending think of it like this: How does an animal comprehend the world of humans? They can’t begin to, for them it is absurd.

This is a film that uses interstellar travel to examine the choices we make about how we use the time we are allotted and how that affects the ones we love. Its great triumph is that the staggering special effects are actually matched by the emotional investment it engenders in the viewer for the characters. Rarely do films challenge demand and reward a viewer like this one does.

I’m generally unmoved by tearjerkers so it came as big shock to me how much this animation affected me. I’ve seen a lot of anti-war films, read a lot of WWI accounts of the trenches but nothing has made me more of a pacifist that this film. It captures, almost perfectly, childhood innocence in the face of war. War made, as all wars are, by pride filled adults. Children haven’t really had much of a voice when you consider the history of war films but this film more than compensates and tells what is probably not an uncommon tale of those caught up in war.

At the end you just want it to be different, like you might wish that all the horrors of war had never happened and that’s why this film is such a work of genius. It is almost unbearable.

Immediately after watching this film I signed up to make monthly donations to UNICEF, what more can a film do?

Not sure why this is scoring lower than back room or end has a start. There are at least 4 great songs on here. Love this as much as I do their others.

At least 3 tracks that will blow your mind. There's real musical genius here. Some tracks are weak but only in comparison to the brilliance of the stronger ones.
