1.0 out of 5 stars Good Film, Egregious DVD Transfer by Tokyo Bullet, 12 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Boiling Point [1990] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a good film, quite slow but rewarding. Fans of Kitano will know what to expect, and will not be disappointed.

The DVD is another matter. Tokyo Bullet have done a very poor job of transferring this work to DVD.

Firstly, the picture is washed-out and lacking in detail. That may be forgivable by some, given the low price.

Far worse is that some aspect of the remastering has caused the picture to lose fidelity at various points - the degradation is most extreme when faces are moving across the screen. I believe this to be the result of a cack-handed attempt at noise-reduction on the part of the transfer engineers (which would be consistent with the washed-out picture). Whatever the case, the problem is very noticeable, and very distracting.

Boo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic NYC Salsa, 21 Mar. 2005
This review is from: Cosa Nuestra (Audio CD)
Maybe his strongest record over-all, but all of his Fania's (up to Siembra at least) are fantastic. This is a trombone-led classic of NYC Salsa, full of sass, and tons of fun. Willie had one of the best of all Latin rhythm sections, swinging hard and cooking underneath all of his brilliant invention; and a very eclectic taste, beautifully drawing in regional elements from various parts of Latin America, Africa and beyond. Besides, this record has one of the best album covers ever, re-enforcing his tongue-in-cheek Hispanic street-punk image.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishingly Fresh Sounds from Paris, 1970, 21 Mar. 2005
This review is from: Comme a La Radio (Audio CD)
Astonishingly fresh sounds from Paris, 1970. Fontaine is a French chanteuse who made some great experimental records in the 70's (this is one of them) - here she appears with some of the best of the US Jazz musicians resident in Paris at the time, stars in their own right. The result is generally accessible, truly original, and really quite hard to describe: it's not avant-garde jazz or pop or chanson, but is informed by all of these in the best possible ways...
