4.0 out of 5 stars John Cassavetes - a man of great emotion!, 21 May 2004
The first John Cassavetes film I ever saw was 'A Woman Under the Influence,' and I was gripped by it from the moment it started. This film is excellent through Gena Rowlands' portrayal of a housewife who suffers a nervous and mental breakdown. I daresay when the film was released in the early seventies it must have caused quite an uproar with the themes that it explored. Peter Falk is great as Rowlands' husband trying to pick up the pieces after his wife's destructive behaviour has left him to care for his children and the everyday running of his house.Cassavetes as a director has the ability to convey on screen the turbulent emotions of ordinary people like you and me just trying to live life day to day. I would recommend this film to anyone who wanted to see a good Cassavetes film.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Flying Entertainment!, 10 Mar. 2004
What a marvellous film and certainly one of the wackiest films ever made in film history. A wealthy newspaper proprietor (Robert Morley) decides to sponsor an air-race from London to Paris. The invitation to race attracts competitors from all around the world and the usual villain or two intent on winning by cunning methods and devices.Terry-Thomas is in brilliant form as the villain here.
With an international star-studded cast such as James Fox, Stuart Whitman,Sarah Miles, Gert Frobe, Jean Pierre Cassel and the likes of the late Dame Flora Robson, Tony Hancock and Benny Hill to name but a few this film is unforgettable. It's zany, funny, mad and totally loud. This film has always been one of my favourite films since childhood and every time I see it I'm thoroughly entertained and never disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Susan Sarandon - what a lady!, 10 Jan. 2004
What a great biography.Marc Shaphiro captures the very essence of Susan Sarandon in this book. He has produced an interesting book that looks at the life and film career of one of Hollywood's
most fascinating actresses - Susan Sarandon.
This biography explores Sarandon's Conservative upbringing, her tense relationship with her parents who have often frowned upon her strong left wing ideals, her first marriage to Chris Sarandon, her many personal relationships with people such as her current partner Tim Robbins, her film career, her political activities and causes and motherhood.
Susan Sarandon is an amazing woman, film actress, mother and human being. Her strength of character and steadfast conviction to speak out at injustices in society are qualities you have to admire as the biography also examines her interests with issues such as the plight of the homeless, aids, the Gulf War and children as a Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef. Susan Sarandon is a legend in her own right who has done much to re-define the status of older actresses in Hollywood as her career goes from strength to strength the older she gets. This is the definitive biography for any die-hard Sarandon fan and I would recommend it also to anyone who wants to read an interesting celebrity biography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage horror at it's best!, 18 Nov. 2003
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Vincent Price is one of the greatest horror actors in history. This is a strange and enjoyable horror film in which he plays a millionaire who invites five people to spend the night in his haunted house. If each of the five people are able to survive their night of terror in his house they will be given $10,000 dollars. As the film unfolds the millionaire's invitation leads to a very interesting twist to the tale.
I love this film because it's old fashioned horror at it's best, the dark secret passageways, vats of acid, skeletons, decapitated heads and spooky looking butlers and maids. This film is so much better than the recent version that has been made.I'd recommend this version to everyone as a must see. They do not make horror films like they used to.

4.0 out of 5 stars True Crime - truly impressive!, 26 Oct. 2003
This review is from: True Crime [DVD] (DVD)
Alicia Silverstone is an actress whose acting ability has clearly been overlooked over the years. She is a good actress and in True Crime she is excellent as a 16 year old schoolgirl with ambitions to become a policewoman as well as an obession with 'True Crime,'magazine. Her passion for crime is aroused when a fellow schoolmate is tragically murdered by a serial killer preying on young girls. She conducts an investigation of her own and incurs the wrath of local detective Jerry Guinn (Bill Nunn)and the attentions of an enigmatic stranger in town and new police cadet Tony Campbell (Kevin Dillon).
I really liked this film and it is one of Alicia Silverstone's best films. She is certainly not the teenage bombshell as seen in 'Clueless,' and she displays her competency and skill as an actress. She is superb as Mary Giordano the crime obesessed teenager who gets more than she bargained for when she decides to turn into an amateur sleuth and solve the grisly murders that have taken place. With great supporting performances from both Bill Nunn and Kevin Dillon this is a good film and for any Alicia Silverstone fan a must see film. There is more to Alicia Silverstone than meets the eye as she proves in this underrated thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable!, 26 Oct. 2003
The moment I started reading 'The Alchemist,'I found that I could not put it down. The essence of life is contained within this classic. I found myself throughly entertained by Santiago's journey from Spain, through to the exotic markets of Tangiers and then into the Egyptian desert where he meets the alchemist. It's an interesting journey where he sees the world and meets people of different cultures but he also experiences personal growth as he falls in love,he becomes more responsible as a human being, he is robbed, he works in a crystal shop in the most unlikeliest of places- a steep hill and he finds that he has to become tolerant of others such as the boring bookish Englishman he is thrown together with on his way to Egypt. It really is one of the most amazing journeys any individual can undertake.
'The Alchemist,' has such a powerful effect on you when you read it. I felt that I was on a spiritual journey of my own when I was reading the book as I pondered over issues that the book raised.'The Alchemist,' made me look at my own life and how I needed to value the importance of living it to the full, as well as achieving my own dreams and ambitions in life and listening to my heart. After having read 'The Alchemist,' I realise now why it's such a popular book and everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in cool entertainment!, 20 Oct. 2003
The Blues Brothers will always stand the test of time as one of the best film comedies ever made. It combines talent in the form of the late John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, hilarious and unforgettable scenes, great music and musical numbers and an impressive star cast as John Candy, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Twiggy, Steven Spielberg, John Lee Hopper and Carrie Fisher in the film.
Jake(John Belushi)is freed from jail and he and his brother (Elwood)visit the school run by nuns that they attended as children. They discover that it's due to shutdown due to a lack of government funding. Therefore they embark on a 'mission from God,'to raise the money needed to save it from closure and they resurrect their former band to perform in a benefit concert to save the school.
I love this film and the music throughout it is excellent. I found myself clapping and tapping my feet to the Blues Brothers band and all the musical artists featured. The Blues Brothers is electric, vibrant, outrageously funny and a must see film which I
highly recommend to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Airplane - High-Flying Entertainment!, 19 Oct. 2003
This review is from: Airplane! [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Airplane is a comedy classic. It never fails to amuse me every time I watch it. It's so hilarious with references throughout it to many films in popular culture and airport disaster films.I've always loved that scene where Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are dancing at the disco just like a scene from 'Saturday Night Fever.'With a stellar cast such as the late Lloyd Bridges, the late Robert Stack,Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar and Peter Graves to name but a few this film will entertain you and have you laughing in stitches. It's funny, crazy, sexy, insane and good -it's Airplane.
