5.0 out of 5 stars Small but perfectly formed, 14 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this Lenovo Chromebook for general use after trying a friend's Chromebook and being impressed by its performance. At under £100 on Prime Day this laptop offers 2GB of RAM and 32GB of solid state storage. However a Chromebook is intended to use Google Drive over wifi and the internet as its main storage. As a special offer you can gain free access to 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years via Google with this machine. The screen is small but perfectly sharp and usable with a matt surface and has a rotatable 720p webcam and microphone built in just above it for Skype.

The laptop has two USB 3.0 sockets, twin speakers, a HDMI socket and a SD memory card slot to augment the onboard memory. The compact keyboard has flat keys and can withstand liquid spillages. Fully charged, the laptop will run silently for over twelve hours as it has no fan. It is rugged in construction and can withstand being dropped from a desk to the floor as it is designed for use in education environments. The case is textured plastic and all the sockets are heavy duty. There are some quirks with the Chrome OS - to right click you press with two fingers on the trackpad and to put the caps lock on is Alt-Search. The laptop boots up in seconds and uses the Chrome web browser as the main interface. There is a Chrome store for free apps and many Google apps are pre-installed such as Google Docs which is compatible with Microsoft Office. All you need to access this machine is your Google or Gmail account and documents and data can then be synchronised across all your Google and Android devices via Google Drive. Highly recommended if you want a tough, fast, inexpensive device to work with over the internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent protection, 14 July 2016

I bought this 11 - 11.6 inch case to protect a 11.6 inch Lenovo Chromebook which fits snugly inside. The black neoprene case is additionally fully lined with soft plush material and the case is well finished and securely sealed with a substantial zip along the top with two metal zippers. There is a detachable wrist lanyard included for extra security when carrying a valuable laptop around. Highly recommended to protect and cushion a laptop against any bumps or scratches.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate 007 Collection, 10 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A full set of the twelve Bond novels by Ian Fleming plus the short stories from For Your Eyes Only at a very reasonable price make a very satisfying e-collection of books for those who enjoy their 007 in the original form. The novels started with Casino Royale in 1953 and ended with The Man With The Golden Gun in 1965. Here are all the elements of the future legend - SMERSH, SPECTRE, Walther PPK, Aston Martin, Blofeld, Leiter, Moneypenny, M and Q. Settle down with an ice-cold martini (stirred but not shaken) and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mini 8x20 monocular, 27 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A mini monocular at a micro price from China. It fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and the image is surprisingly good for the price, with the monocular having a plastic body with glass optics, an adjustable eyepiece for focusing and a rubber eyecup for spectacle wearers. The 8x magnification is fine for outdoors and the monocular comes with a wrist lanyard and a Velcro sealed case. Recommended as a tiny monocular for slipping in the pocket when venturing out on walks or for keeping in the glovebox in the car.

Logitech MK270 Wireless Combo with Keyboard and Mouse (UK QWERTY Layout) - Black
Logitech MK270 Wireless Combo with Keyboard and Mouse (UK QWERTY Layout) - Black
Price: £17.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive combination, 28 Aug. 2015
This is a compact wireless keyboard and mouse set with a single tiny USB receiver which plugs into a PC or smart HDTV and so only needs one port for the two devices. The keyboard comes with two AAA batteries and has an on/off switch as does the mouse which comes with a single AA battery. Out of the box, once the receiver was plugged into a PC, both items were recognised and worked straight away. The mouse is on the small side (9 x 6 cm) but is comfortable to work with and has a scroll wheel and two buttons. The black keyboard is a standard size with contoured, clearly labelled keys, twelve function buttons and eight programmable buttons, a numeric keypad and a dedicated Windows key for calling up the Start screen in Windows 8.1 and has two folding feet on the underside to tilt the keyboard if required. The keys are easy to press and reasonably quiet and the keyboard and mouse both work with machines running Windows 8.1 and 10 without any problems. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic desktop, 23 Aug. 2015
I bought this Hewlett Packard HP 110 desktop PC to replace a venerable Dell XP desktop machine which had reached the end of the line when Microsoft withdrew support for XP even though the computer was perfectly serviceable.

This HP machine is cased in black with a sleek shiny black facia that has two USB ports, a SD card reader and sockets for headphones and a microphone, all easily accessible on the front. There is an illuminated on-off switch and a drive indicator light on the top right corner and a covered slot for the DVD RW drive which seems a bit flimsy but works well in practice. On the rear panel the computer has VGA and DVI output sockets, an Ethernet socket as well as four more USB sockets and audio sockets plus a mains power socket.

The processor used is a quad core J2900 Pentium with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard disk and the machine uses inbuilt Intel HD graphics. The computer is supplied with a copy of Microsoft Windows 8.1 which takes about twenty minutes to configure for the first time. In practice the machine seems smooth, quiet and capable. The machine can be updated to Windows 10 for free until mid 2016. This takes about four hours to download the new files and about six hours to install and configure the system which then opens into a home screen which is similar to the familiar traditional Windows screen from previous versions of Windows but includes some elements of Windows 8 in a less obtrusive way. Windows 10 will be supported by Microsoft indefinitely so it seems a good long term solution, although it will not run certain older software that runs on Windows XP and Windows 7.

Moore's law is in operation as this computer has six times more storage, four times more memory and four processor cores rather than one for a fifth of the cost of my old desktop! This HP computer is recommended as an affordable home desktop that is reasonably future proof, once updated to Windows 10, and has sufficient disk, memory and processor power to handle most day to day tasks.

Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex Electric Rotary Lawnmower
Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex Electric Rotary Lawnmower

5.0 out of 5 stars A cut above the average, 21 Aug. 2015
This Bosch lawnmower was bought to replace an electric rotary Flymo machine which had given up the ghost at the start of the mowing season. The Bosch mower components clip together out of the box with no tools required although a certain amount of patience is needed to build the 50L grass-box out of four flexing pieces of plastic. In use, the Bosch mower is relatively quiet and delivers an excellent cut which can be easily adjusted over seven different cutting heights and provides a striped finish to the lawn. The 40cm blade cuts down the time needed to mow the lawn and the large grass-box requires fewer trips to the bin with the cuttings. The Bosch mower has comfortable handles and a 15m electrical lead fitted with a 13A plug. An extension lead will be required to reach the furthest corners of a large lawn and this mower seems well designed and built to cope with many more mowing seasons to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough protection, 17 Feb. 2015

This rugged case fits the Fire phone like a glove and protects all the vulnerable corners. There are cut outs for the speakers top and bottom as well as the headphone socket on the top and the microUSB socket on the bottom, with a lip protecting the front screen and a cut-out for the camera, flash and microphone on the back. The phone volume control and camera buttons have covers over them, which do not impede their functioning, as does the power button on the top. On the back of the case there is a neat fold down stand for propping up the phone on a table. The case fits the phone easily without any forcing which is always a good sign and the black version matches the phone and gives it a military appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Amazon Fire phone, 9 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this smartphone when it was on short term special offer for £99 to complement a Chinese clone phone running Jellybean. At this price the Fire phone is excellent value although it is locked to the O2 network. It arrived with headphones, a UK charger and a USB lead. It needed a nano SIM card which I obtained from GiffGaff on a PAYG tariff which runs on the O2 network. The 4.7 inch screen is 1280x720 with 315dpi which is bright and easy to view and well protected with Gorilla glass. The phone has two cameras - the front camera is 2.1MP and the rear camera is a f2.0 five element lens 13MP (4128x3096) with a LED flash and unlimited Cloud drive storage for any photographs taken. Both cameras can take 1080p video at 30fps. The phone runs Fire OS3.6 and has Amazon App Store available to download from nearly a quarter of a million free or paid for apps. The phone uses a fast 2.2GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with an Adreno 330 video processor and has 2Gb of RAM and 32Gb of storage which cannot be upgraded.

The phone is covered with Gorilla glass front and back with a soft touch black plastic edge and an Amazon logo on the back. Apart from the front and rear cameras there is a volume button on the left edge with a dedicated camera button and the nano Sim tray below. There is an on-off button and a headphone socket on the top edge and a micro USB socket on the bottom. The stereo speakers are integrated into the top and bottom edges of the phone. In use the phone seems smooth and fast although certain aspects like the carousel display take some getting used to. The Amazon App Store has most of the popular apps available with the exception of YouTube so at the offer price this smartphone is a very attractive proposition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fully fledged Windows 10 tablet, 2 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This Is an eight inch tablet that runs the full 32 bit version of Microsoft Windows 8.1 using 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage expandable to 96GB through adding a micro SD card. It can be easily upgraded to the Windows 10 operating system in a few hours and has one year's free subscription included for Office 365 Personal (worth £60) together with the use of 1TB of free space on OneDrive cloud storage for a year plus currently a £30 cash back offer in return for an old working tablet. It uses a fast quad core Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33 GHz processor and battery life is reasonable at around five hours before recharging is necessary using the supplied mains charger and USB lead.

The Linx 8 has a 1280x800 TFT touch display with a microHDMI socket included so that full HD media can be displayed on HDTVs or monitors providing a suitable connection lead is purchased. The tablet also has two speakers on the rear, a volume toggle switch and an on/off/sleep button on the right edge, a microSD card slot on the left edge and microUSB, microHDMI and headphone sockets on the top edge. There are two 2MP cameras included, one each located on the front and back of the tablet, with a built-in microphone which is ideal for Skype video calls. Neither camera is really suitable for taking high quality photographs. The tablet has built-in wifi and Bluetooth connectivity and the case is matt black with a rubberised non-slip surface on the back.

With the full version of Windows 8.1 included and with the addition of a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a fully working portable Windows system can be had for a very reasonable price. Any extra Windows software can be installed on the machine subject to the storage and display constraints, so this tablet is intrinsically far more capable than tablets running the Apple iOS or Google Android. Be aware though that, as on Windows desktops and laptops, this Windows operating system spends some time at each session downloading and updating files. Recommended if you need the power of a full Windows operating system in a tablet format.
