5.0 out of 5 stars Tough protection, 17 Feb. 2015

This rugged case fits the Fire phone like a glove and protects all the vulnerable corners. There are cut outs for the speakers top and bottom as well as the headphone socket on the top and the microUSB socket on the bottom, with a lip protecting the front screen and a cut-out for the camera, flash and microphone on the back. The phone volume control and camera buttons have covers over them, which do not impede their functioning, as does the power button on the top. On the back of the case there is a neat fold down stand for propping up the phone on a table. The case fits the phone easily without any forcing which is always a good sign and the black version matches the phone and gives it a military appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Amazon Fire phone, 9 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this smartphone when it was on short term special offer for £99 to complement a Chinese clone phone running Jellybean. At this price the Fire phone is excellent value although it is locked to the O2 network. It arrived with headphones, a UK charger and a USB lead. It needed a nano SIM card which I obtained from GiffGaff on a PAYG tariff which runs on the O2 network. The 4.7 inch screen is 1280x720 with 315dpi which is bright and easy to view and well protected with Gorilla glass. The phone has two cameras - the front camera is 2.1MP and the rear camera is a f2.0 five element lens 13MP (4128x3096) with a LED flash and unlimited Cloud drive storage for any photographs taken. Both cameras can take 1080p video at 30fps. The phone runs Fire OS3.6 and has Amazon App Store available to download from nearly a quarter of a million free or paid for apps. The phone uses a fast 2.2GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with an Adreno 330 video processor and has 2Gb of RAM and 32Gb of storage which cannot be upgraded.

The phone is covered with Gorilla glass front and back with a soft touch black plastic edge and an Amazon logo on the back. Apart from the front and rear cameras there is a volume button on the left edge with a dedicated camera button and the nano Sim tray below. There is an on-off button and a headphone socket on the top edge and a micro USB socket on the bottom. The stereo speakers are integrated into the top and bottom edges of the phone. In use the phone seems smooth and fast although certain aspects like the carousel display take some getting used to. The Amazon App Store has most of the popular apps available with the exception of YouTube so at the offer price this smartphone is a very attractive proposition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fully fledged tablet, 2 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This has to be the bargain of the year - an eight inch tablet that runs the full 32 bit version of Microsoft Windows 8.1 using 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage expandable to 96GB through adding a micro SD card. It has one year's free subscription included for Office 365 Personal (worth £60) together with the use of 1TB of free space on OneDrive cloud storage for a year plus currently a £30 cash back offer in return for an old working tablet. It uses a fast quad core Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33 GHz processor and battery life is reasonable at around five hours before recharging is necessary using the supplied mains charger and USB lead.

The Linx 8 has a 1280x800 TFT touch display with a microHDMI socket included so that full HD media can be displayed on HDTVs or monitors providing a suitable connection lead is purchased. The tablet also has two speakers on the rear, a volume toggle switch and an on/off/sleep button on the right edge, a microSD card slot on the left edge and microUSB, microHDMI and headphone sockets on the top edge. There are two 2MP cameras included, one each located on the front and back of the tablet, with a built-in microphone which is ideal for Skype video calls. Neither camera is really suitable for taking high quality photographs. The tablet has built-in wifi and Bluetooth connectivity and the case is matt black with a rubberised non-slip surface on the back.

With the full version of Windows 8.1 included and with the addition of a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a fully working portable Windows system can be had for a very reasonable price. Any extra Windows software can be installed on the machine subject to the storage and display constraints, so this tablet is intrinsically far more capable than tablets running the Apple iOS or Google Android. Be aware though that, as on Windows desktops and laptops, this Windows operating system spends some time at each session downloading and updating files. Recommended if you need the power of a full Windows operating system in a tablet format.

4.0 out of 5 stars Echoes of the old Floyd, 26 Dec. 2014
This review is from: The Endless River (Audio CD)
This is unmistakeably Pink Floyd and a fine tribute to the sadly missed Rick Wright. There are elements from their past albums scattered throughout the eighteen tracks arranged into four sides. This is post Wall Floyd, without Waters on lyrics or bass, building on instrumentals recorded by Wright twenty years ago at the time of the Division Bell sessions and augmenting the tracks with new instruments and a twenty first century production. There is just one song with lyrics on the final track which sums up the progression of their music over all the decades since the Syd Barrett years. The CD comes in a smart book style case with a booklet of photographs and lyrics. Recommended if you like the atmospheric soundscapes of early seventies Floyd.

This review is from: The Shootist [DVD] [1976] (DVD)
This is one of my favourite films - a wonderful elegy by Don Siegel to the passing of the Old West and the actors that brought to life its legendary characters. Set in 1901 as Queen Victoria dies, it looks at how time passes amid the changes that have overtaken the frontier spirit - the motor car, electric lighting, the telephone and telegraph are here at the dawn of a new century as the old ways fade away. John Wayne plays an old gunslinger, John Books, at the end of his days, a role that was a poignant reflection of the actor's own life. James Stewart plays his friend and doctor and Lauren Bacall his irascible landlady in her own inimitable way. Times may change but the fundamentals stay the same and Books, like Wayne, is an honourable man running out of time. Like all John Wayne's great roles he stands up for an essential decency and the outgoing, generous American spirit that we miss today. As the quote says, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic design, 23 Dec. 2014

A watch that just tells the time, simply and clearly. No distracting dials or buttons, just a white face with black hands and numbers. Very unobtrusive and lightweight, the battery life should outlast the resin strap which is the weakest point of the watch, but at this price, and cheaper, who cares?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds good, 6 Dec. 2014
A sleek soundbar that works well with the 2014 Samsung HDTVs which can be paired with it wirelessly by using the SoundConnect button on the sound system remote control. An optical cable can also be used to link the TV to the sound bar but the cable has to be purchased separately. The sound bar still requires a power supply lead to be plugged in and also has a separate sub-woofer which is connected via another lead. In use the unit performs well and certainly enhances the sound when compared to just using the TV speakers. It also allows a virtual 3D mode when playing music or movies. Tablets or smartphones can be easily paired and connected via the Aux/BT button to play music through the system. The sound bar can be wall mounted below a wall mounted TV or placed beneath a stand mounted TV - a 40 inch screen or above is preferable as the sound bar itself is 37 inches long. Recommended for enhanced sound from your widescreen TV and other devices.

Ark
Ark
by Stephen Baxter
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Per ardua ad astra, 12 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Ark (Paperback)
A thought provoking book from Stephen Baxter set in the near future after a devastating flood inundates all the Earth's land masses leaving only regions like the Rockies above the rising waters. This is gritty science fiction that looks at what we might be capable of if faced with species extinction. The sense of impending catastrophe as the Ark is constructed amid a society breaking down with time and resources rapidly running out is captured brilliantly. The science is based on existing technologies and some theories that we have not yet managed to turn into reality such as the Alcubierre warp drive. Baxter is good at stories covering long time scales and even with faster than light drives, travel to the stars will not be quick or easy. Only eighty young people are launched to Jupiter on an Orion nuclear powered craft where the starship is fuelled and then sets off in a warp bubble to the most likely exoplanet around a star over twenty light years away. Keeping a human society intact under such conditions has been the subject of other books about interstellar travel - nothing is plain sailing between the stars and there is no backup when things go wrong so far from Earth. I would have liked a sequel to find out the long-term fate of the travellers but the book is a very good standalone story.

Berghaus Rg1 Jacket Black - XX-Large
Berghaus Rg1 Jacket Black - XX-Large

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal lightweight waterproof, 22 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent lightweight, water resistant and windproof jacket from Berghaus which is ideal for general outdoor use in our mixed climate. It has velcro tabs on the cuffs and a drawstring on the waist to cut out any draughts. There is a full size hood concealed in the collar, a mesh inner lining, two good sized zipped mesh pockets and a full length zip with velcro tabs to seal the jacket at the front. It copes very well in heavy showers with the rain beading on the surface rather than soaking through. I bought a larger size than usual so I can layer it with a fleece underneath in colder weather. For fell walking I would get the longer Berghaus Cornice Goretex jacket which is equally good and has inner zips to attach a fleece to offer more protection in a howling gale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement HDD cable for MacBook Pro, 11 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was bought to replace the cable on a 13" MacBook Pro when we upgraded the machine with a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive to replace a faulty hard disk. We thought it was just the original HDD that had failed but when the new SSD would not partition we ordered this cable which solved the problem and seemed much more robust than the original. The Mac Pro is now in full working order and much faster to boot.
