4.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated 80s flick, 23 Feb. 2015

This review is from: Johnny Handsome [DVD] (DVD)
Under-rated 80s Rourke flick with fine performances from a good cast. Johhny Handsome is a facially deformed smalltime crook who gets double-crossed on a heist that he planned by two volatile career crims. While in the clink, he is offered the chance of a new face and life by partaking in an experimental surgery programme. With his new boatrace, will he take that chance for a straight life? Or will he use his new unrecognisable mush to trick and destroy the people that set him up? Watch and see! This has the look and feel of an 80s picture which I always like and if, like me, you are a Rourke fan, you should think about checking this one out if you haven't already. Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth Owning, 19 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Straight Outta Compton (Audio CD)
This album contains 3 very good tracks in 'Straight Outta Compton', 'F- The Police' and 'Express Yourself' - and 1 good one in 'Gangsta Gangsta'. The rest of the tracks are OK but pretty skippable really. It's very much of it's time (late 80s) and is worth owning. This edition also contains bonus material and extended versions which might interest completists. Doesn't, in my opinion, compare to THE best Gansta Rap album of all time - 'OG' by Ice T, but is still up there simply because of the afore mentioned tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job!, 30 Jan. 2015

This s*** lasts all day! Hardens extremely quickly though so you need to get your application technique down asap! Nice occasional wiff of sandalwood throughout the day so not at all over powering scent-wise. A tad pricey but there you go.

Not sure if I'd heard of these before, but caught them in the early hours of a saturday morning recently on some 70's Rock show on the telly. Liked what I saw, bought this CD, wasn't disappointed. Budgie are really good and, as I've since read, are an influential band not only for later bands like Metallica and Soundgarden who cover their songs, but also for thier contemporaries - Black Sabbath and Led Zep. You can recognise similar qualities in Sabbath, Zep and Budgie. They're heavy rock riffmeisters who can be bluesy, mellow and jazzy all in one song. The singer has a really good voice - as high as Robert Plant's, but smoother and Jazzier. This is a great selection of songs taken from 3 of their early to mid 70's albums that has made me want to investigate further. Check 'em out!

One of the best live albums out there. Great mix of AC/DC favourites, brilliant listen in every respect. 'Riff Raff', 'Whole Lotta Rosie', 'Hell Aint A Bad Place To Be' among many more rockin' tunes. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Half decent album, 12 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Blow Up Your Video (Audio CD)
CD comes in a card/plastic package with a booklet insert. As far as the music goes, 'Heatseeker', 'Thats the way I wanna rock n roll', 'Meanstreak' (nice funky riff running through that one), 'Go zone' and at a stretch 'Kissin' Dynamite' are the best tracks here. There are some nice bits here and there on the remaining 5 tracks but nothing like AC/DC at their rip-roaring best. There's a song called 'Two's up' - typical bawdy title from AC/DC, but listen to it - it's an odd one because there's nothing upbeat or jaunty about it. In fact, musically, it struck me as sounding vaguely melancholic in it's delivery really! I bought this album for the first 2 tracks anyway which I had on 7" singles in the 80s. Agree with other reviewers who say the production is a bit flat, but still, even on a bad day this band piss from a great height upon a majority of yer modern rubbish. A half decent album then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, 2 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I got this DVD for a couple of quid and what a bargain! L&H are frickin' hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud several times while watching this. This selection contains the classic short 'Music Box' which is worth having alone. There are a couple of silent shorts too. I don't know why they offer superfluous colourised versions of L&H as they only really serve as a bit of a distraction from the comedy action - great comedy doesn't need irrelevant tinkering with!

A dinky little book with nice illustrations. The title is self explanitory and the poetic words of D. Thomas effortlessly conjour cosy images as you read. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a ganders, 25 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you like all things BEAT, then you'll love this. Recorded NYC 1992, this showcases the poetry of Gregory Corso, Peter Orlovsky and Allen Ginsberg. The poets read in rotation several poems at a time. For me, Corso was the draw here as I consider him one of the top 3 Beat poets (along with Bob Kaufman and Lawrence Ferlinghetti). BUT, I would be interested to discover more of Orlovsky on the strength of what I heard here; I'd been aware of this poet for a long time but hadn't been able to get hold of anything by him and he really does shine on this album. Nice work. I don't know what it is about Ginsberg, but I've never really warmed to his poetry. I just don't think he's as interesting or as good as some of the other Beats. He seems more like a spear head to the Beat movement, a poster boy if you will. His words seem, to me at least, a bit flat in comparison to his peers. Perhaps that's why he came across as more outlandish in character, a way of compensating for this? Perhaps not. He does, however, deliver vocaly the clearest recitals on this recording - Orlovsky is raspy and sounds ill, and Corso shocked me a little with his high New York kind of whine - there are lots of forgetful "erms.." punctuaing his readings initially and he sounds so old. If you buy this, listen to Corso with your eyes closed. To me he sounds like a really, really old and decrepit Rick Moranis! Almost comical! Anyway, I got it for £1.35 all in and think it's definately worth a ganders.

An excellent collection. Really - the mind boggles at some of this stuff! Endlessly fascinating use of the English language. You simply have to read this for yourself.
