3.0 out of 5 stars Some really great tracks and moments, 9 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some really great tracks and moments, but too often a track that was really going somewhere diverts manically down an unwanted path. Feels like too many ideas cloud the otherwise smart and funny lyrics. I still like it, but it's not what it could have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album I've heard since their first, 9 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Best album I've heard since their first. The Guardian idiotically called them "too clever" which is probably the stupidest review I've ever read. Every song is perfect, layered with meaning and depth. There are stand outs like Distant Past, No Reptiles and Regret but all the songs are so brilliantly catchy, masterfully arranged and bear so many repeated listening I think I've managed to gouge a scratch in an MP3 which shouldn't be possible. The best most expansive British band on the scene. LOVE EM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, 23 Jan. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's been a long time since I've been able to watch Dr Katz again so this box-set was really welcome. What surprised me most was just how many great comedians appeared on this show as patients and how consistently funny it is. The relationship between Dr Katz and his son Ben is brilliant and subtley written. As with all great comedy it has an emotional core. That sounds a bit drippy but it's true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Poker Book To Date, 23 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Every Hand Revealed (Paperback)
Other than Barry Greenstein's book this is one of the few Poker Books to be written in a genuinely interesting and original style. It's amazing to get a look inside the thought process of one of the greats of the game, and perhaps most intriguingly is seeing that when he's sat there dwelling up he's not just thinking about what to do casually, he's dissecting the decision and coming to a mathematically and emotionally complete decision (when things go well, anyway).

I've read this book twice and even knowing what happens, there is an urgency and drama to Gus' writing that drives the 'story' of this tournament win ever onward. Fantastic stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great example of 70's film-making, 23 Jan. 2009
I'm strugling to think of a single film ever made that can really be compared to the Andromeda Strain. Most films that start of as scientfic end up being action movies involving chases and government conspiracies. Well, this one doesn't. It's really just about the science and it's amazing how fascinating it can be watching a robot arm very carefully lift a monkey in a cage.

The sets and attention to detail are staggering, and the 1970s computers don't look as terrible as some of the ones you see in 1980's films, which is also pretty amazing.

This is a really bare-bones release. But it's cheap so I didn't really mind. It would be nice for them to do a special edition but this is certainly worth watching in the meantime. I think people rating it as 1-star just because their precious "ticker" effect isn't there need to get a grip quite frankly. Maybe they're members of the British Ticker Association or something equally unlikely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Great, 23 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Palo Santo (Audio CD)
I saw them live at the End of the Road Festival in 2008, their first appearance in the UK, and they played most of the first half of the first disc from this album and blew the place away. Their drummer is more hairball than man and they kind of have an otherworldly look about them that's a little unsettling, but that adds to their performance.

I love this album. It's beautiful and rather sad at the same time. They have a really unique sound that they didn't really repeat on the follow up album Rook which is good, but it's really no Palo Santo.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Poem than Lecture, 23 Jan. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A work of beautiful perfection. Wonderfully delivered and written, charming and poetic. I cannot say enough good stuff about this series other than to bang on about how they don't make 'em like this anymore. Stick your "Body Shocks" and your "The Boy Whose Brain is Made of Explosive Acid" crapola up your pipehole. This is what television should be making more of.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first jazz record I bought, 23 Jan. 2009
I heard a track from this album on WFMU and was surprised to find myself enjoying it since I've never really liked jazz before. Well, this record changed that and since then I've started listening to a lot more.

The signature of this album is the sort of 'battle' if you like that goes on between the trumpet and the saxophone. I've listened to it many times, and each time you get deeper and deeper into it.

If you're not sure about giving jazz a go, I think this is a good start because I found stuff like Miles Davis to be a lot to take in for a newcomer like me, whereas this was accessible without being commerical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Live - Not Good / On Record - Good, 23 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Radios Burn Faster (Audio CD)
I saw Read Yellow a good few years back at a club in Brick Lane and they were really not that good. Sure, they played with enthusiasm and some members of the crowd went nuts, but the sound quality was awful and they sounded like a thrash punk band.

Transfer their sound to record however and bingo - all the subtlety that is lost in their live performance is there. Songs like Soleil were drowned out, and the lead guitarist is way better than you might think from seeing their mosh-pit style screeching on stage.

Haven't heard much from them since which is a shame because this really is a very decent album.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Slater to grow Fat by, 23 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Real Cooking (Paperback)
I've used a great many many Slater recipes over the years and you can too with this handy book sized addition to your cookery book library. God I love Nigel Slater recipes - where most wuss out and suggest a fine spray of low-fat cooking oil, Nigel Slater recipes are more about giant slabs of butter, pints of cream and heaps of meat - and boy howdy does this guy know how to cook chicken.

Note: His "30-Minute Cook" book is also great, as is "Appetite" and of course "Real Fast Food". His recent book "The Kitchen Diaries" is a daily diary of a year of his meals and whilst it's well written be aware that he expects you to figure out a lot of the dishes for yourself and it doesn't feature quite so many straight up recipes as his other books.
