Demon Road (The Demon Road Trilogy, Book 1)
Demon Road (The Demon Road Trilogy, Book 1)
by Derek Landy
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £7.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Demon Road, 29 Aug. 2015
I was lucky enough to be sent an arc of this commencing book of Landy's new supernatural series by Harper Collins and Netgalley. I can absolutely confirm that I cannot thank them enough for the opportunity to read it before attending an event with Derek Landy at Seven Stories in Newcastle this evening at which I will get a hardback signed copy of the book to treasure forever! It is brilliantly jam packed with Landy's wit, humour, thrilling action and paranormal interaction (demons, vampires, serial killers, killer cars and more!).
We open the book to an apparently normal sixteen year old schoolgirl,Amber, with her parents, Bill and Betty, being reprimanded for some misdemeanor of Amber's in the principal's office. However that is when the "normality" ends. Shortly after the meeting Amber discovers she is not as boringly normal as she thought and is forced to flee from her home and parents because they want to kill her. Nothing will ever be the same for Amber again and she is in for a rude awakening about the rest of the world too...
Do not hesitate! Buy it and read it!!!

It works perfectly most of the time and is a good replacement for those people who used to order using the red button on television.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark, thrilling and beautifully written tale., 6 April 2015
This review is from: Cuckoo Song (Kindle Edition)
An eloquently written, dark and frightening fairy tale illuminating the tragedy inflicted by the first world war on eleven year old Triss and her family. Frances Hardinge has penned an amazingly complex tale of the devastating effects of the loss of a beloved son/brother during the war and the results of members of the family trying to mend their grief stricken lives by effectively making "deals with the devil". This is suitable for able readers at primary school but I would probably recommend that they were at least in Year 5 or above.
When Triss wakes from an "accident" she finds it an uphill struggle to cope with her parents' stifling care and her younger sister Pen's obvious hatred of her. She has an almost insatiable hunger and is horrified when one of her dolls screams when she picks it up causing her to fling it across the room and break it. Soon she finds the only way of assuaging her hunger is to eat her dolls, ribbons, diary pages and almost anything else she thought of as precious from before the accident. She becomes aware of the relationship Pen has with the "Architect" and the nightmare unravels even further. Can Triss save the family and herself from the Architect's evil machinations and solve the mysterious hatred her parents have for their dead son's fiancee, Violet?

Exciting and ensnaring this first book in Kami Garcia's and Margaret Stohl`s new series follows Ridley and Link into a dangerous world of magic, deception and dark power. I really enjoyed Beautiful Creatures but this moves at a faster pace and keeps you thrilled to the very last words. The sequel can't come quickly enough!!

A great improvement from the last version of Words With Friends which used to wobble as you played and had to be deleted and reloaded between turns. I love the new look of the game and really like the feature that lets you check how good your word choice is.

Alina`s journey to leave behind her orphaned past and become Grisha was not at all what she expected. The Darkling who seemed to care for her is revealed as a controlling force of evil and not to be trusted when he tries to kill Alina`s childhood love, Mal. I am really looking forward to reading more of this compelling series.

The plot of this book is reasonably good which is why I persevered with it to the end to discover what happened. However the grammar and the vocabulary are frequently appalling and made me wonder whether Addison Moore had the book proof read before publishing it since it seems like an uncorrected proof. I am not impressed enough by this to feel like reading more of her work.

Guardians Inc.: The Cypher (Guardians Incorporated Book 1)
Guardians Inc.: The Cypher (Guardians Incorporated Book 1)
Price: £0.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and well written - READ IT!, 20 Nov. 2013
Easy to read and well written to capture the imagination of the audience, I enjoyed this introduction to a series of books about Guardians Inc (a secret society who have the task of trying to keep the balance of developing technology and elemental magic under control throughout the world by keeping track of the Book of Concord which is written by the Oracle). The guardians need a Cypher to translate the signs which lead to the Book of Concord every five hundred years and Thomas Byrne and his grandad, Morgan, are both discovered to be Cyphers and employed by the Guardians to translate the signs.
Unfortunately Morgan is captured by the Warmaster who wishes to eliminate technology and take over control of the world with magic thereby plunging the world into another dark age. Thomas is suddenly sucked into a series of adventures fraught with danger in search of the Book of Concord as well as trying to rescue his grandad from the Warmaster. Will the Guardians succeed in locating the Book first? What can Thomas do to save his grandad? I can't wait to read more of this thrilling saga!

This book is well crafted to captivate middle grade readers, both boys and girls, because it has a plot involving fantasy, adventure, magic and the paranormal as well as humour. There's something for everyone in here and Kai`s journey to discover who he is and what happened in his past is full of unexpected twists and turns. I really enjoyed and recommend it for readers aged ten and above.
