Casio G-Shock G-SHOCK Men's Watch G-8900-1ER
Casio G-Shock G-SHOCK Men's Watch G-8900-1ER
Offered by Chapelle
Price: £75.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Display & Feature-Packed, 2 July 2017
I purchased this today at a well-known store with a Gift Card received for graduation, but I'd already checked out the Amazon reviews beforehand.

Here's what I really like about this watch:

(1) PRICE : is really good compared to other mid-tier Solar rechargeable G-Shocks, as this is an older end-of-line model. Soon stocks will disappear and Casio are no longer making this model (GR 8900-1ER)

(2) EASY : to setup and set the date/time, as well as other functions such as Daylight Savings Time (DST), auto-Power Save (PS) for when you're sleeping, auto-light the display if you wish for when its dull/cloudy so that when you twist your wrist the back-light comes on.

(3) LIGHT : to illuminate the face in the dark or when its dull can be set to LT1 or LT3 to stay on for 1.5 secs or 3 secs respectively.

(4) BATTERY : comes fully-charged and set to 'H' (high) straight out of the box. Other reviews note this, especially those on YouTube. Further, the battery once fully charged lasts for 9 months under normal use, without any light source whatsoever. I really like the idea of still using this watch in 10 or 15 years time with the original Li-Ion cell still inside.

(5) ALARMS : I initially set the 'SIG' to 'ON' meaning that the watch chimes on the hour, every hour, but turned it off before bedtime. The 5 separate alarms per 24-hour period (not possible to set more than 1-day ahead) will be useful for multiple reminders, especially too as they are not that loud, so that I can use whilst lecturing and only I should hear them.

(6) BUTTONS : the 4 function buttons, one on each corner of the display (A - top left, B - top right, C - bottom left and D - bottom right) are easy to use and highly intuitive. Button A changes or sets things. Button B switches between modes and buttons C & D are -/+ or back/forward thus really easy to use. The buttons blend into the display case, but are easy to depress.

(7) COMFORT : this large watch -> 51 mm wide display & 14 mm deep, is surprisingly light and the strap is easy to adjust and is attached quite rigidly to the display case, pointing down (impossible to lay this watch out flat like a leather strap normal watch). Given the low weight and position of the strap hinges it fits perfectly despite my narrow wrists and the metal back of the watch is not always touching my skin (less sweat, no marks when you remove it).

(8) STYLE : it looks really great, better than the pictures online. The chrome bezel is metal, curved and highly polished, particularly the rim (when you turn the face at an angle) and the split dial (bottom light and bright with day/month/date on a pale blue screen) looks fabulous. The display colours in real life are not as stark as those in the manufacturers photos.

Possible shortcomings (for some people):

(1) NOT ATOMIC : similar feature Casio G-Shocks, particularly the newer 'GW' range have atomic clock time sync (multi-6 band) half a dozen times per 24-hour period (typically on the hour from 11 pm or midnight and each hour thereafter). However, these newer models cost 50 percent more.

(2) TIMEKEEPING : apparently this model loses approximately 15 secs/month. Not a showstopper for me, as I can live with re-syncing the time every couple of months by half a minute, using the world time clock on the web. Only takes a few seconds to do.

(3) MANUALS : that come with the watch are teeny tiny and difficult to read, especially if you wear spectacles like me. However, you may download a full-sized PDF version from here:

http://support.casio.com/en/manual/manualsearch.php?cid=009&MODULE=3269&submit=

So, to sum up, I've only had this watch one day, but I've found it easy to use, change features and experiment with the functionality. As a fun to wear, everyday/casual timepiece it fits the bill. If it is ever lost/stolen or breaks (if that is possible for a G-Shock!) it doesn't really matter, as it was so inexpensive to buy.

Three features of this product were instrumental in my decision to buy it; Solar rechargeable, Water proof to 20-Bar or 200 m, plus the straightforward display. I'd recommend it to others without hesitation as a great functional alternative (or second) timepiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely light but compact adapter, works well with Surface Pro 4, 15 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Extremely light product, however the sockets are a very snug fit, especially the HDMI out - had to use both hands to insert and remove the cable, thus no chance of ever popping out. Both the VGA and DVI sockets have screw holes either sides for computer video plugs that may be screwed in to this adapter to prevent detachment - the advertised pictures do show these additional screw mount holes, another useful feature.

I've tested this today with my Surface Pro 4 display port out to a 1080p TV HDMI in and both sound and vision were excellent. Again the display port in plug was a very snug fit with zero chance of accidental removal, it inserts quite tightly but smoothly without too much pressure

5.0 out of 5 stars Well made, plain but strong and functional. Very pleased., 12 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Even better than expected. This case fits my new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 + Type Cover with room to spare (front + back, but snug fit length and width) and will even allow me to put my Surface 2 + Type II cover in as well on top, and still close the Velcro flap perfectly too. The stitching on this is near invisible and the lining is very soft and smooth - it does not leave any marks on the cotton-backed (felt-like) keyboard covers on the tablets, which was an initial concern of mine as the rear of the keyboard covers are a rough material to prevent sliding on glass/wooden surfaces. But these covers by CushCase are obviously well designed and the devices just slide right in. Also the outer canvas material of this case seems both strong and water resistant. Indeed, it feels a bit like a heavy duty tent. Anyway, if you're considering one of these covers check out the 2 attached photos, they really are a top-class product and you won't be disappointed. When you spend a lot of money on retina display tablets you want them protected from bangs and the elements, so this is where function trumps form (in the case of the many alternative folio type covers available to buy).

5.0 out of 5 stars Silent Operation + 142MB/s Continuous Write Speeds, 7 May 2015
Purchased one of these today in Argos, not here on Amazon as I needed the storage space immediately. I have had the older 4TB version of this Seagate Expansion series when it first came out a couple of years ago, but this one is totally silent when in-use. A nice change from before. Also the underside of the plastic case has many more perforations or holes allowing for significantly cooler running.

CrystalDiskMark standard drive test of 1000 MB of data x 5 test runs across all 4 test areas for both Read/Write was performed - see attached picture for the results. The WRITE speeds are pretty decent for a USB 3.0 external desktop HDD attached to my PC via a quad-USB 3.0 adapter.

In actual real use - copying many gigabytes of video data across from my PC, sustained write speeds average 90 MB/s which is still pretty good.

Eventually, I will dis-assemble this drive, remove the actual HDD from the plastic case & USB controller, and install directly in my PC tower, replacing one of my older Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives. Then I would expect continuous write speeds of between 170-180 MB/s.

Please note that PC Hard Drives are sold as 5TB = 5 Trillion Bytes (or 5,000 Gigabytes = 5,000 Billion Bytes), however computers use the binary number system (Base-2 not Base-10 the way humans count) where 1 Kilobyte = 1,024 Bytes or 2-to-the-power-of-10 (2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2) and 1 Megabyte = 1,024 Kilobytes, and 1 Gigabyte = 1,024 Megabytes ...
.... therefore your PC will see what is advertised as 5TB (which is how manufacturers advertise and sell computer products) as 4.6TB of ACTUAL disk space (5,000 Billion Bytes divided by [1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024 ]) as each Gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes and not 1,000,000,000 bytes. PEOPLE CONSTANTLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOW THEY COUNT AND COMPUTERS COUNT AND GIVE POOR RATINGS ON THE BASIS OF THEIR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. So for the record 5TB for sales and marketing purposes (which is perfectly legal) is really 4,656.6 GB of computer storage space in reality and NOT 5,000 GB. Seagate are entitled to sell this product as 5 Trillion Bytes because it does indeed have 5 Trillion bytes of storage.

UPDATE: A few hours later...after > 600 GB of files transferred to this external drive, sustained transfer speeds now averaging 142 MB/s

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Alternative to Canon OEM, Similar Specification & Not the Cheapest, but Offer Value, 24 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought these after much on-line research and the deciding factor was the positive reviews from users in the USA plus the capacity specifications are similar to the OEM Canon LP-E6, that is similar Wh rating and Voltage of 7.4V versus 7.2V (within tolerances) whereas capacity almost identical at 1850 mAh versus 1800 for Canon. But the real reason is that I spent a half hour shooting with this battery and it dropped from 100% to just 99%. Then I left it in the camera for a day and the next day it still shows 99% charge -> first time non-OEM LP-E6 clone has done that for me.

Pros
Work just the same as the original Canon LP-E6 batteries (very similar specification and not silly unrealistic higher spec of many poor substitutes)
Last just as long as the original LP-E6, probably even better, although time will tell (I'll update in a few weeks and amend this review)
Quality look and feel, they feel solid and no metal parts that protrude or may be broken off.
Fit snugly into my 7D, perfect fit, don't rattle or move at all
Came with around 65% to 70% pre-charge, so Canon charger went straight to 3 flashing lights and charged fully in < 1 hour
Packaging was excellent like any camera accessory that you'd buy in a shop, not squashed into a thin cardboard pack.
White colour is actually nice contrast to black DSLR body, easily visible in near-dark or poor lighting.
Not as cheap as other alternatives (even from the same brand), but still offer tremendous value.
Register properly in camera + show proper serial numbers and full 3-green bar recycle health [Info chip same as OEM product]

Cons
None so far - will update if needs be in the coming days or weeks

I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for value back-ups or replacement LP-E6 batteries once the health of the original batteries goes and declines to 1-Red bar in camera info function. There are cheaper alternative at two-thirds the price, but these just work flawlessly and look good aesthetically too. Even the packs they come in are resealable, good perhaps when you want to re-sell your gear.

*** NOV-2015 UPDATE Batteries remain in-camera for months and still show > 75% charge when I switch on my Canon 7D, amazing considering I haven't used my camera in weeks. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE BATTERIES TO ALL 7D, 5D OWNERS ***

1.0 out of 5 stars Work in-camera or in a grip, however they self-discharge rapidly and battery use is high per shot, 11 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Function okay in-camera or in a dedicated battery grip, and Canon 7D recognises them and registers their 'info' correctly showing both recharge health/quality (3-green bars) as well as total charge percentage, however after fully charging these batteries to 100 percent I began using them and after 16 shots (about 10 minutes or so) of use they were both down to 92%. Battery life is way below what the OEM LP-E6 gives, this is the only downside, as others too have also pointed out. Yes they are cheap at a fraction of the cost of the Canon Li-Ion battery, but you're better off paying more for ones that will work when you pick your camera up the next day..

** UPDATE: Returned to my camera bag 4 or 5 hours later and one battery was showing 36% and the other just 39% in the BG-E7 compatible battery grip. That is a 'self-discharge' of two-thirds in just a few hours! That is very poor indeed. I've used generic LP-E6 clones before and they lasted the same as the original, but these would not last 1 night **

*** UPDATE 2: Took both these batteries out of the camera and charged them to 100% and put them back into the camera grip, but did not use or take shots, just registered battery info and checked both charge status @ 99% (they never ever show 100). Then switched off the camera and put back into the camera bag. Next morning checked the battery status 9 hours later and only 36% remaining after ZERO USE. Checked again 1-hour later and only 29% power remaining. These batteries drain so fast you can actually watch the power dissipate - take 3 or 4 shots and the BATTERY CHARGE DROPS ANOTHER ONE PERCENT!! ***

Returned to Amazon for a Full Refund - will buy Hahnel HLX-E6 on Amazon as its a false economy to have cheap batteries in expensive DSLR and not have them function correctly. I can understand photographers who want cheap spares...but you need to charge these immediately prior to use or they simply won't function.

1.0 out of 5 stars Drains batteries (AA + LP-E6) even when Lens detached and Camera is OFF??, 11 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Appears to be very solid, similar to the Meike BG-E7 replacement grip that I had before, however, this grip causes batteries to drain very quickly even when camera is not in-use + lens detached e.g. drains AA Eneloops as well as LP-E6 when the camera is switched off -> you can still hear noises coming from the gripped camera body as if the DSLR is attempting to focus even though everything is OFF!

Went through 2 x sets of 6 x AA rechargeable NiMh Eneloops in < 24 hours without taking pics or turning camera on. My intelligent AA battery charger showed the Eneloops as "Null" and refused to even charge them as the Voltage had gotten so low (drained them fully), so I had to use old standard slow charger to start re-charging the Eneloops just to get the voltage up > 1.1v so then my proper charger would charge them.

This grip is a nightmare as you have to remove all batteries when not in use -> defeats the purpose of having a battery grip if you cannot leave the batteries in it for any extended period of time.

*** UPDATE: Amazon refunded me the cost of this item after I returned it (why I always recommend Amazon, their return policy is excellent). I performed a final test with this grip by detaching it from the DSLR and covering the power pins with the original plastic cap and put 2 new LP-E6 batteries in it (new Ex Pro Ultras I got here on Amazon) and switched off the grip too, but it continued to make sounds and drained the batteries - even detached and switched OFF! Obviously a short somewhere or a problem with the circuitry or battery connections, anyway just be aware some are defective ***

4.0 out of 5 stars NTFS formatted Write speeds a bit slower 21MB/s, "blinking" RED light is annoying, 11 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this for my Microsoft Surface 2 as a permanent USB 3.0 drive and it is really snug and tiny, even smaller than the Integral Fusion 64GB USB 3.0 metallic memory stick that I'm already using (that will now stay on my key ring and will be used for file transfers). I ran the CrystalDisk standard industry benchmark test of 1000 MB x 5 Runs for both Read/Write across all 4 categories of sequential, random, 4K etc. I performed this test for both format types - the default exFat or FAT32 (it comes pre-formatted this way) as well as reformatting as NTFS (4086 Byte Allocation size - the default too) as anyone wishing to use larger video files with this USB memory stick will be forced to re-format as NTFS otherwise they will be restricted to files a couple of GB's or under. See attached JPeG picture for both results.

Sustained Write speeds range from 21 to 22 MB per sec for NTFS and a bit higher at 25 megabytes per second for FAT32/exFAT. Real life tests transferring lots of files shows that average transfer speeds are more like 13-15 MB/s e.g. copying 2 video files (5.74GB in total) saw speeds drop down to 6 or 7 MB/s and as high as 15, whereas copying lots of small epub files saw speeds of 21MB, but as low as 13 MB/s.

Note: I'm using a very high-end PC built by myself with 6 USB 3.0 ports and using the same port with my new Seagate 4TB Portable USB 3.0 drive I can get WRITE speeds of 225 MB/s, which is faster than my internal SSHD drives. So the limiting factor here is the SanDisk product itself.

*** UPDATE: I've downgraded to 4-stars from 5 as the constant flashing/blinking red light (behind the Red and Black logo) is both annoying and frustrating as it does drain my Surface 2 tablet even when not in use. In-use it goes from blinking slowly to rapidly during file transfer, then when inactive it flashes on and off very slowly but still very bright, even when the device it is attached to is turned off (Shutdown in Windows). This is a design flaw. This device never sleeps....keeps sucking power! ***

5.0 out of 5 stars SPEED DEMON - 235 MB/s WRITE SPEED IN CrystalDiskMark TEST, 19 Feb. 2015
Got one of these 4TB ultra portable USB 3.0 drives today - same thickness as my thumb as it contains 2 X SAMSUNG M9T 2TB 7mm drives with a SATA to USB 3.0 RAID 0 controller holding them together. This means that it sees 1 logical drive but writes to both drives simultaneously.

CrystalDisk V3 Tests of 5 sequential runs of 1000MB showed average WRITE speeds of 235 MB/s or a 1.5 times as fast as my 3TB Seagate Barracuda drives over USB 3.0. There is nothing faster on the market for USB 3.0, apart from SSDs that is and that is a different league altogether.

Sustained WRITE speeds (copying a couple of Terabytes of large 10GB+ DTS HD Movie files) are more like 110 MB/s to 115 MB/s, still way above other portable HDDs. Copying a single large file results in transfer speeds of around 165 MB/s - basically the same as copying between 2 internal SATA drives in a desktop PC. Stupendous!

Putting all my HD Movies in one backup drive & a portable one to boot means that I can connect this drive to my Sony PS3, or my Surface 2 Tablet, or directly to one of my smart TVs and I can put it in my pocket when I visit friends and allow them to copy all the movies they want in double quick time.

Using multiple HDDs in one unit allows for faster READ/WRITE speeds, great for one-off storage (such as backup) of large files, BUT I would not suggest that people use these special drives for daily file use as RAID 0 means NO PARITY check when copying like on a normal single HDD, so if you get a glitch whilst transferring data, you could potentially lose everything and have to reformat!

** Notwithstanding the potential pitfall of a RAID 0 bundled portable drive, if the worst case scenario materialises, you always have the option of breaking open the plastic case and removing the 2 x 2TB Samsung 2.5 inch drives and using them in a caddy or laptop (games console etc.) as separate and normal NTFS drives **

*** This drive unit works well with both MAC and Windows PCs and comes bundled with Seagate Dashboard Installer (you can download this anyway) ***

Totally silent drive but does get quite hot, especially the underneath part, so best to stick rubber feet (to elevate it) on the bottom to improve airflow/cooling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value - Sleek Product, 26 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I checked out the videos demonstrating this product on YouTube first before I purchased one. Now, having used it on a few blades I can say that it works flawlessly. It is also quite slim and smaller than I imagined - it is the same length as my pen that I write with and no wider than my Bic 4-colour Biro. The sharpening stone is also much smoother than it looks in photos.

Great product, low price, thus fantastic value.
