Batman Detective Comics HC Vol 1 Faces of Death (The New 52 )
Batman Detective Comics HC Vol 1 Faces of Death (The New 52 )
by Tony Daniel
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars very mixed could be better, 4 Oct. 2013
This is Volume one of Batman Detective Comics and it is a very very mixed novel

their are two story arcs in this novel

the first one is the "Faces of Death" story line which is partially a Joker story but serves to introduce a new Villain Doll face and also set up a future Joker story arc

essentially this arc is fifty fifty the Joker chase scene is done well and is action packed but after that the dollmaker seems like a very bland Villain but has a lot of potential

the second story arc is the "Russian Roulette" story line which in my opinion is very uneven some parts are ultimately good but others let it down the idea of a bank type heist on the penguins casino/club/palace seems intriquing but it was just lacking a little something the stakes didint feel to high but it was a interesting story line none the less

in my opinion just a very mixed novel great art but just mixed

3.0 out of 5 stars Its not bad but it could be better, 20 April 2013

Ok Detective Comics Volume 2 is a Mixed Bag Tony Daniels has Improved Significantly from Volume 1 which was not that good its only redeeming part being the Jokers 5 page Cameo

But in this Volume detective comics is starting to turn into what it should have been originally Batmans everyday crime fighting ...we have so many Different stories in this Comic..from featuring the Scarecrow ...to featuring the Mad Hatter to Black mask Heck even a new Villain was introduced.

NOTE if you have the NIGHT OF OWLS Book issue 9 [night of owls tie in issue] will be in both its not a very strong issue anyway ..but i feel it works better in this book than it ever did in the Night of owls book.

Because of the Range of stories it makes the book very engaging something Volume 1 lacked but because of this their is not one Arc spanning the book and in fact 3 different arcs

Because of all this and because Tony Daniels improved from Volume 1 I'm going to give it three stars this is what volume 1 should have been in my opinion

Also the three Bonus stories are very very good. the Two face story was good at shows more about his Character and its a neat Idea focusing it around Two face and not featuring Batman very cool.

The two stories showing Bruce wayne training to be batman and returning to Gotham where both equally good as well

and of course the last Bonus story which sets up a storyline for another Batman book where a familiar FACE will be returning ;)

and the Art
Because of the range of artists in this book Im going to give it 7/10 good art but the inconsistency between the art in the book hurt it in the long run

anyway buy this book..its better than volume 1 needs improving. Its a shame this was Tony Daniels last volume as it seemed he was improving from this volume anyway 3/5 is the over all verdict from me

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story believe me on that but Confusing to get Into at first, 14 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok let me explain Batman Night of Owls collects the 5 main issues of the event or the issues that will give you the best idea of what the hell is going on there are other issues but these 5 spread through out the book move the story on E.g [Batman *8,*9 [< the two core main issues] Batgirl*9 Nightwing *8 and *9]

Now first thing to know is that there are a lot of tie in issues in this Book the ones I highlighted above are the ones that will give you the best Idea of whats Going on as you read through it. The cool thing about Night of Owls is its not a traditional Event its a collaboration of many different Titles coming together ..and even Cooler In my opinion is that its set over one night

Essentially the story picks off where Batman Issue 7 left off [well after the whole mid western prequel part but anyway] with The court of owls awakening the talons and beginning an Invasion of Gotham which is seen through the eyes of Batman and his Bat Family What I enjoy about the book is how every Character gets a chance to shine every Character faces a Talon and has a mission to defend someone there are funny moments and sad moments but altogether and how rather than a conclusion to the Court of Owls story line its the Mid act with the last act happening in the not yet released "City of owls"

Anyway it has a confusing start with in my opinion the Unnecessary Opening in a Mid western yes its good but i would have rather had that at the end of the book with the alfred annual
Art
The art is fantastic with such a Range of artists working in this the entire thing actually meshed together quite well 5/5

Overview

All though a tricky book to get into and some weak parts at first [and i don't recommend reading if you haven't read batman court of owls] its an enjoyable event all in all a must buy for Batman fans :)

also let me explain ..this to people saying "DC is ripping me off the court of owls story arc is half finished i have to buy batman vol 2 city of owls to get the other 3 issues SCAM!" this Book contains every issue in the night of owls EVENT any issue past Batman*9 is not part of the night of owls event..because its not on the night you know the talons attack..the last 3 issues being released in city of owls are not part of this event so obviously they won't be part of it those 3 issues are there to close the court of owls story arc..so no Dc has not scammed you

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book, 5 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Its been 5 years since the Justice League first became a team..5 Long Years in those 5 years a lot has happened but the Team remains relatively new and still trying to find there place in the world

This Book does a Good Job of actually feeling sympathy for the Villain in the first book we saw a classic battle between good and evil by this book we are seeing the team finally meld ..and at the same time the Public's God like worship of them coming to an end

In general the artwork is fantastic and the Characters are very well written did the Job Excellent in that respect and a big up for a deeper story than the first Volume the Justice League Book Looks to be becoming the A title for the DC Universe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must be Read To understand Plot points i'n Ultimate Comics ultimate's, 24 July 2012

I can see where many of the other Reviewers are coming from this story is weird and yes Hawkeye is quite a hard character to connect to ..But Hear me out the story is very Good..yes it has some flaws but this books primary purpose was to explain plot Points brought up in Ultimate Comics ultimate's and I't does this extremely well ...

Summary

I'n SEAR [South Eastern Asian Republic ] Experiments have been happening o'n mutants to turn them into an army..but I't goes wrong essentially an Uprising happens and SEAR Requests Shield brings I'n a peace keeping team to help [ This is referenced I'n Ultimate Comics Ultimate's ] Them Stabilize the situation ..Because of this Hawkeye Is sent in to lead a team to sort the situation out..and a Conspiracy Is Unmasked...

Art [5/5]

The art is gorgeous and Can't be faulted I enjoyed it

Final notes...This should be bought to understand plot points in Ultimate Comics Ultimate's if you aren't buying that book in the ultimate universe then you shouldn't have to buy this one

Ultimate Comics, The Ultimates: The Republic is Burning
Ultimate Comics, The Ultimates: The Republic is Burning
by Jonathan Hickman
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Hickman brings the Ultimate's back to a new high, 24 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
O'k after the dreadful Ultimate's 3 , Ultimatum and the so an so New Ultimate's Hickman Brings the Ultimates Back to there former glory now make no mistake this does not pass Mark Millers Ultimate's 1 or ultimate'2 I'n terms of story But I't is Close to the sort of stories Mark Miller told.

Summary

After the events of Avengers Vs New Ultimate's the world is in Chaos a War in the Pacific , A'n Asian Country going through a'n uprising and Asgard appearing in western Europe ..To make matters even more Confusing A group called The tomorrow people have begun an Invasion of Earth..and they are led by a very Familiar Figure, With all this at stake it is a very high paced high octane story.

ART (5/5)

Great Art I can not fault it, I love it and it brings the story to life

Ps

I would also Purchase Ultimate Comics Hawkeye as it explains certain plot points in the story that are only alluded to.

Altogether 4/5 Good but not perfect But also a huge step up for Joeph Loeb .

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story but has some Flaws, 15 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Anyone who has played the Ultimate spider-man video game [ like I have] will know that this Volume is Bendis working the story into Ultimate Universe Canon...and it is a great story primarily shown through Eddie Brock's [ aka Venom] Point of view the story is quite fast and fluent but if anyone is Expecting a direct adaption of the video game will be sorely Disappointed. Don't get me wrong nearly all of the Characters from the Video game appear aka Trask,Silver sable and Beetle etc etc are in the Book heck even Green Goblin makes a very small little Cameo [ and its not what you think]. It is an awesome story and you wont be let down when the Fight scenes happen.

But the story Jumps around a lot from 6 months ago to 3 weeks ago this is mainly so Bendis can Include Characters such as Nick fury, But it can be quite hard to keep up with how fast it goes along but don't let this put you off the story is fantastic and a good conclusion/continuation? of the Ultimate Symbiote Story arc started all the way back at Ultimate Spider-man Volume 6.

The art is Gorgeous and the twists and turns in the stories are fast and fun. a must buy for a Ultimate spider -man fan !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Conclusion To the green Goblin story Arc I'n the Ultimate spider-man Series, 14 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Yes The Ultimate Universe has had many Nasty Villains Some Hell bent on world Domination Like Ultimate Dr Doom some wanting Genocide of the entire Non Mutant Population like Magneto..but then..some are Just Crazy and that is where Ultimate Green Goblin/Norman Osborne stands ,

In this comic we see His long story Arc in the Ultimate spider-man Universe Reach a Conclusion and I't is a bloody one, to briefly summaries A'n Explosion happens at the Triskelion Osborne escapes and goes on a rampage to destroy peter Parker and find nick fury [ If you read Ultimate Power you will know what happens to him...it is not a perfect explanation due to some plot holes but you can solve those in your own head] he cause a wave of Chaos and encounters many former friends turned foes and just plain old foes

Now this Novel in general is great has great story it has a few downfalls but they are greatly outmatched at what it does good at.

The New artist Stuart Immonen [ if that is how you spell his name :/] Is actually quite good he gets my seal of approval yes it did take a while for me to get used to his style but his art is really good and i think he fits Excellently in to the role of artist for Ultimate Spider -man

So all in all it is a must buy as it closes of an Important Goblin story arc! 5 out of 5!
