The History of Espionage: The Clandestine World of Surveillance, Spying and Intelligence, from Ancient Times to the Post-9/11 World
The History of Espionage: The Clandestine World of Surveillance, Spying and Intelligence, from Ancient Times to the Post-9/11 World
by Ernest Volkman
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference book on a previously hidden world, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book as a possible reference work to a planned sequel to my own Cold War espionage novel 'Fire & Ice' and I was not disappointed. The book cleverly runs the gauntlet of being, on the one hand detailed and comprehensive and, on the other, covering the entire history of spying and counter spying from Egypt, Greece and Ancient Rome, right up to the War on Terror with its cyber-spies and satellite technology. Read it from cover to cover as a fascinating narrative or dip in and out for details on everything from Wellington's code breakers and Mata Hari, to Bletchley Park, the Cambridge Spies and spying from space.

5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with essential insights, 25 May 2014

This is the book that contains many of the details of H.G. Wells's love life that were so wonderfully described in the David Lodge novel 'A Man of Part' but which the great man himself thought too revealing to include in his 'Experiment in Autobiography'. As with the main work, this book gives a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the man himself - this time in his own words - and also those he loved. A 'must have' for students of Wells or of the Victorian way of life and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie adaptation, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
OK. So a two-hour movie will never be able to plumb the depths that the classic BBC TV series with Alec Guinness managed to reach with this John Le Carre classic, but Gary Oldman, Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth give it a darned good try and, for my money at least - do the book more than justice. The characterisations are brilliant. The script cleverly condenses the main points of Le Carre's iconic novel into an engaging narrative and the brooding atmosphere of the movie is wonderful. Mark Strong is particularly good as Jim Prideaux. Colin Firth makes a very credible Bill Hayden and Benedict Cumberbatch is wonderful as a slightly unsure Peter Guillam. Gary Oldman demonstrates his complete mastery of the art of acting by slipping so perfectly into the role of George Smiley that you almost forget the Alec Guinness version. Watch and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class Cast - First Class Script, 25 May 2014

This review is from: Cambridge Spies [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
I found the dramatisation of the Kim Philby/Guy Burgess group to be absolutely fascinating to the point where I watched the complete set of DVDs back to back. The atmosphere of the era, in which communism was seen as a worthy alternative to fascism during World War II and the romantic notion that it might remain that way is convincingly conveyed by the script. The cast is stellar and the overall feel is of an extremely high class production.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chilling insight into what might have been, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This fascinating 'alternative history' movie is not only chilling in its depiction of a possible Nazi occupation of England, but also in its portrayal of how ordinary decent English citizens could have been sucked into the Nazi cause in a simple attempt to survive. This in itself is a valuable lesson, since it gives an insight into how things certainly were in other European countries that suffered under Nazi rule in World War II.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the field of Social Marketing, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Anyone interested in why people behave the way that they do and/or how to influence behaviour in a certain direction would be well advised to read this book. Doug-McKenzie-Mohr is one of the leading practitioners of 'Social Marketing' and a highly respected academic expert in his field. But this is not a dry textbook by any means and contains fascinating insights and examples that will be valuable to a wide range of readers.

This is the ideal DVD companion to 'The James Bond Archives' book that I reviewed earlier. Taking the viewer from the early days of Ian Fleming and his typewriter in the Bahamas, up through the comical US adaptation of Casino Royale featuring 'Jimmy Bond' to the point where Cubby Broccoli and Harry Satzman made the gamble that launched Dr. No and established the James Bond franchise, this DVD is a treasure chest of new information and insights that will make for repeated viewing by anyone interested in this cinematic phenomenon.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE 'Must Have' Bond Book, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is THE book for the serious Bond fan. The price alone will deter those who are not true believers but the content, the layout and the sheer size of the book (you will need two hands to lift it!!) makes it the must have book for Bond fans everywhere. Loaded to bursting point with photographs dating back to the early days of Ian Fleming and the development of the Bond books before Dr. No and taking us up to date with the appearance of Daniel Craig, this is a goldmine of material that even I - as a Bond aficionado from the days when anyone below the age of 18 could not get into a cinema and watch them unaccompanied by an adult (they were considered that risque! - found a wealth of information and pictures I had never seen before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Anthony Hopkins in great form, 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great to see a movie that pairs the early Anthony Hopkins in fine form with a classic work based on the book by the espionage maestro John LeCarre. This movie strips away the glamour of espionage depicted in the Bond movies and shows the pain and suffering of those involved. A master class in acting and screenwriting.
