The War of the Worlds
The War of the Worlds

5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic, 3 Oct. 2013

When considering the war between planet's there are many fine example s of the genre but none finer than Wells classic tale of an ordinary man fighting for survival while everything he knows crumbles around d him. Wells set the benchmark with this tale and no one yet has come close to matching it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for 4 1/2 star's, 28 Sept. 2013

While funny, tension filled and exciting, the book lacked a little lymph that would merit 5 stars. What that extra is I can't put my finger on, but it could be a slight dip in pace at the odd point. Would that stop me buying the next? No. Overall enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sheer delight, 16 Sept. 2013

I read Kidnapped first some 40 years ago and was entrance then by the scale, the action and the humour of the tale. 40 years on, and I still feel the same. A wonderful tale of adventure that is a must read on anyone's list who wants to try a true classic. True, in this modern world the language may seem stilted, but once you adjust to it, after a page or two, it is part of the joy. So risk a new style and story far beyond any adventure from the modern breed of authors.

I read a lot of history, including oral histories. As counterfactual history this book stands as strong as any. As a Damon good read it's better than most a superb read that I can recommend to anyone

Always with Carl Hiaasen you find yourself not knowing if the adrenaline you have is from the pace or from the laughter. An excellent opportunity to suspend belief and just enjoy the rush.

It's so damn nice to find a book you want to get naked with.
Not 'necessarily' in a pervy kind of way. Not 'necessarily'.
But...
But...
Hot Damn in a Hand Cart this is good. And Sexy. And Mental Viagra.
The Viagra bit? Well it kept me awake all night giving it no end of attention and occasionally drooling with pleasure.
The Writing burned it's way into my mind that frankly was blissfully scorching. The...
Look. Forget all that.
Just buy the book and read it. You will love every little second of it.

Just don't blame me if you end up naked with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kick Bottom writing in Steel Toe Capped Shoes., 21 Aug. 2013

OK. This is actually the third time I've tried to review this book.
Normally I'd give up after Amazon lost my first, but this is well worth talking about.
Let me set you straight.
THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE VAMPIRE STORY.
This is exceptional.
Where to begin? Well, frankly, at the begining Giselle, the heroine got right on my nadgers. Truly irritating the way she let those around her get away with damn near anything. But then... then it kicks in and she shifts from being a bystander in her own life and becomes a survivor who will say or do anything to live. She learns fast and becomes a force to be reconed with.
Oh, and then there's the writing.
Lynch is one Hell of an author.
Within a couple of hundred pages she weaves a story that combines a teenage coming of age story with Renaissance Politics (With incidentally a family that make the Borgia's look like The Borring family from number 23 - the ones with the Volvo), some truly wonderful horror stories, and creates an entire world that is simply believable. She produces an entire world that can draw you in and make you feel accepting of it. Even when something truly dreadful happens. Not a mean feat, by any stretch of the immagination.

If you consider buying this, because you think it will be one of those Twilight clones that populate the shelves, think again
This is in a class of its own that frankly kicks the Twilight arse back to the schoolyard, where it belongs.

A friend turned me onto Bard Constantine a little while ago.. Damn glad she did. He has redefined the Ted genre by taking it Diesel punk. In doing so creating a wealth of glorious grotesque and genre faithful stereotypes, but, most importantly giving them soul and believe ability. While the characters are faithfully to Pulp fiction style they are October own world and time. So glad I was prompted to read him, so do yourself a favour and find out why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work, 16 July 2013

The thing is.... The very thing is, that this book does not insult the readers inteligence. For that alone I could love it.
The book has been written with exceptional skill, wit and plot structure. For that, again I could love it.
The reason I love it the most though, is that it's a Damn Good Read. So good I read it in one night. No mean achivement, when I should have been working myself.

The Author slams you straight into the story with an energy that carries you through to the end. No time is wasted on the pages as it is assumed you have enough wit yourself to understand the back story and asides to the plot. And once it gathers speed, by the Gods does it start you on a rollercoaster ride.
Yes. There is a little titilation behind it, but justifiable by the characters, rather than to pad out the story with a little sex. Add onto that the poetic prose that is used and it makes the read a little slice of Heaven.

If I had to pick a fault, and it's a review, so I can if I want to, it's simply too short. To short because I wanted to read on. Find out what happens next. Fortunatley it's part of a saga, so when it's written I'll be poised with my Kindle ready to download it. It is a damn good book and I would recommend anyone reading the review to go for it. In fact, off the back of The Curse of the Rose, I've started investing in her other works. An Investment I'm sure will bear fruit.

I bought this book for my wife and the first chance I got I bought a copy for myself. Even though I have now read it three times it is just as fresh, stunning and scary as it was the first. A superb work that I can recommend to anyone.
