5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Mod Fiction simply does not get any better than this, 12 Dec. 2015
This review is from: All Or Nothing (Kindle Edition)
Contemporary Mod Fiction simply does not get any better than this. As a near-exclusive non-fiction reader with a zest to indulge in some escapist Modernist literature, I approached this with an open mind and pangs of excitement: a change is as good as a rest, so the saying goes. I have to say that even though the story is fictional, the character detail, mood and pacing swiftly place the reader in a convincing sense of realism. Fast, sharp, focussed and highly descriptive, I would highly recommend this pocket book title to not only those so obviously Mod-inclined, but to the average reader who relishes a book they simply cannot put back into their pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars RESPECT!, 7 May 2014
This review is from: Mods: The New Religion (Hardcover)
I haven't yet completely read Paul's magnificent take on the Mod phenomenon - though I have sneakily delved and browsed regularly enough to have a constructive opinion (at least visually and on presentation and also with regards to the pieces I have read)... and I have to say, as a fellow writer who also has an addition to the genre due out later this year - this book is an amazing measure of achievement and a yardstick by which all of us writers need to try to aspire to. I am bowled over by the quality of presentation and depth of subject material and equally impressed with the near-endless input of notable Faces and key participants on the scene - from club to ballroom to stage and studio - and can see no relative negative angle whatsoever to take. If I had to be pushed into being critical at all, I would reluctantly have to say I found so many high quality original 45's a distraction to the words - and that's because as a fellow collector I never got around to owning some of them! But seriously, this book obviously shines as a monumental and important document and is a real inspiration to anyone who shares an interest in this compelling part of our cultural history. I take my metophorical hat off to Paul and send my greatest of respects to all of those originals and faithfuls who helped create such a worthy scene to require chronicalling, a superb job done by writer and participants alike.

Going to Sea in a Sieve: The Autobiography
Going to Sea in a Sieve: The Autobiography
by Danny Baker
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Baker's dozen in a nutshell, 16 July 2013
I was unsure if I would engage and enjoy this book, maybe finding some relative interest with Danny's Sniffin' Glue period: but quite the opposite. I enjoyed his early years the most and in all honesty couldn't put it down. It is earthy, self-depreciating and packed with humour and a celabratory theme of exactly how it was to grow up in the pre-digital age... well almost pre-stereo age to be more appropriate! Its the first in a 2-volume set and I eagerly await the follow-up, though can't imagine it beating this journal of Baker's pre-fame times gone by.

Avoid this bootleg copy of an original 80's slasher. Its not the real deal. Public Domain, maybe, unwatchable... almost! Quite possibly a real prank!

3.0 out of 5 stars Average thrills within a promising premise, 13 Feb. 2013

Not what you think its going to be... I really wanted to truly enjoy this film, but ultimately felt let down by its bland pacing and weak script. Looks well, acting above average... this could have been so much more.

1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of time, 13 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Foolishly impresssed by the commendable trailer for this run-of the-mill so-called slasher, I quickly realised, upon viewing, that I had wasted my cash! Filmed in a similar vein to some long-forgotten TV movie, with poor acting, slow script and little in the way of suspense, this is well worth avoiding... unless you are easily pleased, that is. I couldn't wait for it to end and get shut of!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bargain double bill, 13 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A typically 'Midnite Movies' value for money double film DVD, let down by the fact that 'Vault of Horror' is cut (and the even more frustrating prospect is that the UNCUT DVD is of poor quality and ratio!). Some scenes are trimmed for gore and blood, though its not obvious and bad enough to spoil the horror fun! Still, this is worth the purchase for the UNCUT 'Tales From the Crypt' and to hold on to a decent transfer of Vault of Horror until a new complete version eventually arrives.

As for the films, both are immensly enjoyable in a retro, late-night Horror nostagia fest kind of a way, 'Tales from the Crypt' being the better of the pair. With a plethora of big film names spread across the two films and plenty of old-style scares and suspense, if you are a fan of Amicus, Tigon, Hammer etc... you would be a fool to be without thesse two treats in your DVD collection.
Three stars for the above mentioned failings
