4.0 out of 5 stars quality is good but the material is not abrasion resistent, 27 Aug. 2014

quality is good but the material is not abrasion resistent, so you won't get any protection from it if you fall off!
As a budget water proof over jacket it does the job pretty well though.

I'm glad to see Stephen Hunt has moved on from fantasy and steampunk to my favourite genre... science fiction, and, within the traditions of fast moving pulp action, he does the sector proud with a tale of a crew of misfits blundering their way into high adventure across the universe, including a street jiving android, a couple of aliens, a female captain with Lana Croft overtones and a nifty (large) space ship called the Gravity Rose. I really enjoyed this SF-ictional outing and trust it will be the first of many more.

Secrets of the Fire Sea
Secrets of the Fire Sea

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Rise of the Iron Moon, 8 Mar. 2010
Rarely have I come across a fantasy novel as action packed as Secrets of the Fire Sea, the pacing is fast beyond belief and the characters are well-rounded and Hunt, as always, crams a lot of story and plot into a single novel, while featuring some of the same people from his earlier novels - notably Commodore Black. He also manages to bring to life some fascinating new ones, such as vicar turned detective Jethro Daunt and Boxiron, his trusty steam-man assistant (think a steam-driven nanotechnology-based life-form).

This time, the gang are off on an adventure outside the Jackelian kingdom, set on the evil isle of Jago, where high technology still exists, and the land has been protected from polar barbarians by a hard-to-navigate sea of volcanic magma.

As usual with the Jackelian series, the novel is expertly crafted for racheting up the action and tension. While all the books vary and are actually quite different between each other, I have yet to be disappointed with any of the novels in the series so far.

I would love to read more novels such as Secrets of the Fire Sea and February, when each new hardback comes out, is fast becoming my favourite time of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfulyl adept, 14 Dec. 2007
This review is from: The Court of the Air (Paperback)
If teachers ever want to combat illiteracy, they should stop handing out their current boring books, and instead put this high-octane gem of fantasy on the top of their required reading list. I whipped through it in a couple of days and had to fight my sister for it when she got into it, too. The Court of the Air is filled with wondrous imagery and a gripping storyline that moves along at such a fierce speed anyone would think there was a brick wedged under the accelerator. There's an absolutely wonderful universe inside stuffed with mystery, robots, sword fights, sweeping battles and brutal sudden death. The villains are given real motivations so they don't feel like cardboard cutouts and you're rooting for the novel's good guy and gal all the way. Where other sci-fi authors often pad out their book out with page-after-page of meaningless description of the villain's eyes and size of feet (or worse, pages of info dump on the fur-colours of some imagined fantasy race), Stephen Hunt just gets on with it. My rule... if you pick up a book and you're annoyingly told the hero has blue eyes by page three, put it back on the shelf. A firm recommendation and I have even purchased an extra copy for an Xmas present.
