Trigger Happy: Best of Series 1 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Dom Joly

Price: £3.95

4.0 out of 5 stars "Dom Jolly is a Genius", 6 July 2011
I became a fan of this series when it was broadcast in the States on Comedy Central about a decade ago. I thought this was laugh-out-loud hysterical then and it still holds up today. Dom Jolly's twisted turns on the old hidden camera gag (a la Candid Camera) are sometimes brilliant and always funny. Some reviewers have complained that this DVD set is not actually the complete series 1 programs and just a "best of" complilation, and for this reason I did not give it 5 stars. But for someone like me who loved this series and welcomed the chance to see these great gags again, it was well worth purchasing.

As a science fiction fan, I was intrigued to see a re-boot of H.G. Wells' classic by the BBC. I highly admired Mark Gatiss' work on "SHERLOCK" and figured it was worth a look. While the dialogue between Gatiss' Professor Cavor and Rory Kinnear's Bedford is well written and enjoyable, the production suffers from budgetary constraints on the special effects. Several plot twists do help cover the shortcomings (an atmosphere on the moon - hence no spacesuits or helmets necessary), but these eventually wear thin, and in the end we're left feeling shortchanged. Worth watching once if you can see a free broadcast, but I can't recommend this DVD for purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "BRILLIANT" Idiot!, 6 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a Yank who loves British humor, I trusted this series to be good based on the involvement of Ricky Gervais. Little did I know how good is was. They say travel broadens the mind, but in Karl Pilkington's case it seems the opposite is true (although occasionally we see that's not entirely correct). While all of this series' laughs are derived from Karl's torment in dealing with other cultures, every so often he expresses real insight from his experiences (such as his feelings on seeing the barrier that separates Palestinians from Israel). If you love British humor and travelogues then you will likely find this DVD series highly enjoyable.
