4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, even better if you like cars !, 3 Nov. 2015

This review is from: Driven (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed this book more than I thought, although if you are into cars you would probably like it even more. I'd probably have liked to read more about his cooking, but it was interesting and gave an insight into his character, even the 'bad' bits

2.0 out of 5 stars Read 'A Life in Secrets' instead, 3 Nov. 2015

.... This book is awful, there is no real attempt at making it an interesting story. It is a crying shame as the subject had a very interesting life. This remains half read on my Kindle......no idea if I'll ever bother to finish it. Vera Atkins was an extraordinary woman, this book doesn't do her justice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Half a story !, 26 Jan. 2015
Can I have a refund ? This book spends much of the time leading us into a story yet before the 'mystery' is solved the book ends......I thought I bought a book, not an episode of a serial!
I have read most if not all of this series and usually enjoy them despite the author over using some expressions 'to be sure' 'polished to a gleam' etc. but I feel a bit cheated with this story, it was building up nicely and then nothing !!

DAB1005 Lowest Design Pink Stripes Mens Woven Microfiber Tie Cufflinks Mens Gift Easter Sunday Presents Idea By Dan Smith
DAB1005 Lowest Design Pink Stripes Mens Woven Microfiber Tie Cufflinks Mens Gift Easter Sunday Presents Idea By Dan Smith

2.0 out of 5 stars Mixed impression, 17 Feb. 2013

The tie arrived promptly and was presented nicely in a square box, rather like the box you might get a watch in.

However when unwrapped by the recipient it already had a pull in the fabric at the front and it required a light press. While ironing it I noticed it was put together with 'burning needle and red hot thread' not well finished and the raw edges were showing in a couple of places. It was for an occasion so there was no option to return it as there was simply no time....pretty disappointing

1.0 out of 5 stars Tudor disaster, 18 Jun. 2010
This review is from: The Tudor Wife (Paperback)
The back cover of this book compares this author with Philippa Gregory - what a joke ! There is no evidence of the research PG displays, nor the style or wit in the writing. The only saving grace is that its an improvement on the Susanna Dunn book : The Sixth Wife, but not much better

I've decided now that if writers of historical fiction can't be bothered to quote sources their books will be left on the book shelf. Where does the idea about Lady Rochford bearing Cromwells child comes from ? Or the idea that Anne of Cleves was a lesbian ?

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult read, 17 Dec. 2009
This review is from: Wolf Hall (Hardcover)
Though I have read a lot about the period, both fact and fiction, I found this hard going.
I had to check several times on whether Cromwell was thinking or talking, in fact so often that I've stopped blaming myself and have decided that is a failure in the book - perhaps simply employing italics for thoughts would have made it clearer.

Its interesting but slow read, I honestly am surprised it won a prize, leave alone the Booker prize

3.0 out of 5 stars Shame about the ending, 11 July 2009
This review is from: American Wife (Paperback)
I have just finished this book which is divided into 4 by the address of the heroine. Sadly 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was the section I liked least, it struck me as being indulgently introspective and lacked any sense of passage through time,I found myself skipping sections
I don't know enough about Laura Bush or about Barbara and George Bush Snr, to know how similar the characterisations are to real life (is Barara Bush called 'Maj' ?)but my guess is that there are credible similarities.
Mostly enjoyable, perhaps more so for American readers ?

1.0 out of 5 stars Could do a lot better, 3 Mar. 2008
This review is from: The Sixth Wife (Paperback)
This was a romantic idea which the author freely admits has no basis in fact.
The last book I read was Alison Weirs 'Innocent Traitor' and in addition I have read all the historical novels by Philippa Gregory - I'm afraid this author isn't anywhere near approaching their quality or style. I found the main character poorly painted and unsympathetic, the dialogue was simply dreadful.
I'm not sure that even the author thinks this is her metier but it is the last historical book of hers I'll buy
Don't give up the day job !
