5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Vivaldi album, 4 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Vivaldi (Audio CD)
The album contains six works by Vivaldi and a traditional Venetian gondolier's song, and all beautifully performed and recorded to a very high standard with an excellent light tenor for the song. Of the six varied Vivaldi works, only one was originally scored by Vivaldi for mandolin, the remaining five being transcribed by Avi Avital himself and lend themselves very well to this instrument. The highlight of this album has to be the performance of the Summer concerto from the Four Seasons. An excellent production from Deutsche Grammophon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Vivaldi, 28 April 2015

There are only a few instrumentalists playing in the arrangements on this album, but it features some of Vivaldi's better works and is nicely performed and recorded throughout. A perfect album for musical relaxation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable recordings of an unusual stringed instrument, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Anton Karas hit the charts in a big way in this country and America with his recording of the Harry Lime Theme, and this CD contains this and other music associated with the film and Vienna. The instrument produces a fascinating sound that no other provides, and the compositions are skilfully played and written by Karas.
The album is probably best regarded as one to keep and save in the bottom drawer and to play on occasions.

The Chris Barber Concerts
The Chris Barber Concerts

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb vintage live traditional jazz and blues, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you enjoy traditional jazz with no electronics then this album takes some beating. The recording is acceptably good mono with good frequency response, but it does not seem to matter too much because the microphone has been well positioned so you can hear all instruments with equal intensity and the live audience makes you feel that you are going back 60 years in time and you are actually at the concert. The recording maintains continuity throughout and there are no gaps between the tracks.
The album contains probably the first three concerts that the band ever made, the first one being at the Royal Festival Hall in 1956, and at a time that the band was at its height of popularity. There are good performances from all musicians and the band's sound is probably most characterised by the inclusion of the double bass and the banjo.
It was probably Chris Barber's own decision to play at concerts only material that was otherwise unrecorded by the band, which perhaps contributes towards the enjoyability of this album as a whole.

These three Telemann Overtures and one Concerto are full of live and vitality and superbly performed by Collegium Musicum 90. The recording quality is virtually unbeatable using a Chandos 24 bit system. Enjoy for always.

3.0 out of 5 stars My disappointing ten, 11 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The musical and artistic performances of the program are unquestionably excellent but I have to confess to be disappointed by the rather 'distant' recording quality of almost all the tracks, which in my opinion has resulted in a lack of timbre and dynamic range. In addition to this, I had been looking forward to hearing a superb remastering of the recording of Bach's Toccata and Fugue which appeared on volume 6 of the vinyl recording of The World Of Your Hundred Best Tunes, but on the CD version it has turned out to be a different recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Errol Garner recorded live., 7 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Errol Garner is in top form in these two half hour concerts recorded in the early sixties. The picture is sadly only in black and white but the sound quality is good mono and, considering its age, the original audio/visual recording has been well restored. Errol Garner's peformances in these concerts is quite stunning and contain jazz improvisation techniques and discordant harmonies as only Errol Garner could have presented them. It is wonderful to be able to view a restored visual recording of such a rare and great jazz artist at work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality remaster package of original 1950's album., 6 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Contrasts (Audio CD)
The CD contains all the eleven tracks from the original LP in their original order plus one track from another album and one track taken from a '50's single. They are all very well recorded and remastered, although in mono, and give excellent continuity and consistency of recording standards. Included in the package is an interesting booklet about Garner and the recordings and it is said to be the first recording of 'Misty' to be made.
Although it might be said that Errol Garner developed greater improvisational skills in his live concerts in later days, this album still demonstrates superb and unique artistic and technical skills in the creation of jazz from a man who it is said was self taught and could not read music. A desirable CD to possess for lovers of this kind of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent BBC nature series., 27 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the picture has the original television 4:3 aspect ratio, because that was the norm when the series was created, and the technology of cameras and recording equipment has doubtless improved since the late 1970's, this program still remains a remarkable and fascinating chronology of life on earth covering millions of years, and to be enjoyed for always. It serves as a tribute to the work of Sir David Attenborough and the BBC.
