The Illustrated Mum
The Illustrated Mum
by Jacqueline Wilson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised by the mother, 7 Jan. 2016
This review is from: The Illustrated Mum (Paperback)
'The Illustrated Mum' was very good and it was the first book that I've read by Jacqueline Wilson. I was surprised by the storyline, about a mother who drinks and has lots of tattoos! I sympathised with her character because she didn't have any money or husband to raise her children. And she was ill!
I found the sisters, Star and Dolphin, very brave, especially Dolphin who manages to get her mother into hospital.
I particularly enjoyed the chapter when Dolphin finds her father at the swimming pool.
Even though I really like the novel, I think it was a bit too long.

Smart Dust
Smart Dust
by Caroline Natzler
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A rich experience, 28 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Smart Dust (Paperback)
I come back to this wonderful collection of poems by Caroline Natzler time and time again and still find something new to mull over.

I love `Arizona', `Love', `Frontier', `Birthday Journey', poems brimming with sensual imagery and rapturous feeling. Equally I am drawn to the more personal poems of familial love - `Mother' is a calm, moving work and its conclusions are inspiring and unexpected. `Garden' too, is a beautiful, lyrical poem on the volatile nature of memory. In every poem, Natzler's language is lucid and clear and rippling with life. All in all a wholly rich experience!

Six Dead Men
Six Dead Men

5.0 out of 5 stars Tense thriller, 15 Feb. 2015

This review is from: Six Dead Men (Kindle Edition)
A detective falls in love with a beautiful murder suspect. So far, so conventional. But in Rae Stoltenkamp's debut thriller, this is really just the starting point for a highly original work.
Madie Bricot is a sensitive femme fatale who, terrified of her murderous powers, is forced to flee the attention of men, love, and ultimately herself. Her loneliness is powerfully evoked and heartfelt.
Robert Deed is a complex and solitary character, sharing Madie's fear of intimacy. He is determined to solve the case of the Six Dead Men. But will love be stronger than his dedication to his job and his morality?
The plot is convoluted, at times the numerous viewpoints in the first half of the book, are challenging, but it is worth hanging on in there for with Stoltenkamp you are in safe hands as she guides you through a fascinating world of criminals, psychics, and tortured lovers, where good and evil battle it out till the bitter end.

The Dinner
The Dinner
by Herman Koch
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and disconcerting, 24 Jan. 2015

This review is from: The Dinner (Paperback)
I was gripped from the very beginning. The story is recounted through Paul, a teacher. He's waiting in a fashionable restaurant, for his brother to arrive, who he hates. The first person narration is perfect for this type of novel. Paul's account of what brought him to this restaurant is revealed little by little. The reader is not able to gauge at first, whether the narrator is a loving, sensitive husband/father, or an obsessive husband/ father and whether the animosity he feels towards his brother, is justified or not. The unreliable narrator is used to maximum effect, leaving the reader wandering all the time what the truth is. A dark depiction of contemporary Holland emerges. A fascinating read.
Only quibble are the Americanisms. Example : 'pinkie' for little finger, which crop up in this translation. Annoying as it crops up several times in a chapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reading experience and easy to use, 22 Jan. 2015

Purchased my Kindle Fire HD6 about three weeks ago and so far so good. It offers the perfect reading experience, providing you with a perfect crisp, well lit screen. Browsing is so easy. I'm a tech dinosaur but after receiving it through the post, getting it started took less than fifteen minutes. I've been urging other technophobe friends to buy a Kindle Fire, especially as they are on offer at the moment. They really provide excellent value for money.
The only glitch was not being able to connect to my home WiFi recently but Amazon customer service were able to sort the problem out quite easily.

The asics gel-trounce are great for comfort and the fit is always perfect.
Unfortunately I have turned to them due to problems with knees but their cushioned soles have been a life-saver.
They also look great with jeans or skirts. I have several pairs.

Scott Brick, who reads this very long Capote work, is superb. He keeps our interest up and his mixture of female and male voices are very deftly done. I thoroughly recommend this for a long car journey. Great book too - a tour de force!
