5.0 out of 5 stars Here's hoping for Season 2 but if not a perfect ending., 29 Aug. 2016

You have to suspend belief rather too much but if you do its very rewarding and most of all entertaining. The performances are endearing and heartfelt. Do not approach as a warts and all depiction of life on the road; clearly that wasn't Crowes intention (Phil in space?). Given that it's very funny and the music is ace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Series 3 up there with the best TV this year., 29 Dec. 2014
Wonderful ending. Beautifully written, intelligently plotted, on a fast connection the HD is stunningly shot and the acting some of the best I've seen this year. I do hope it is not the last we have seen of the main characters as they are a delight to watch. Will look forward to seeing how BAFTA treat this series as it deserves much better recognition. If as I have read the BBC are going to take it and show it in 2015 I do hope they don't truncate the episodes as the long form allowed the writer to plot and engage the viewer so much better than the 1 hour format. Also the grimier and bloodier the better as this has added so much to the Victorian setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if you're not a fan of American Football see it!, 13 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Undefeated [DVD] (DVD)
A truly touching portrait of what it means to emerge from childhood into manhood. Several moments that had me in pieces as the protagonists discover what it is to grasp responsibilty and embrace the teamwork ethic. Coach Courtney should be a template for sports coaches who not only want to win and inspire but also want to nurture talent and inspire the will to work hard and understand what it is to sieze the moment in life that may never come around again. Brilliant.

As always Lewis puts an entertaining slant on archane financial market practises. For people in the industry this is not really news as we have known for years the market was rigged in favour of HFT at the expense of small investors due to poorly thought out regulation and exchanges in cahoots with the HFT players anyway. Big investors migrated to 'Dark pools' to avoid HFT as much as possible some time ago which is why the regulators are trying to 'force' them back to the lit market now. The most interesting point is why Goldman's have software capable of seriously disrupting financial markets in the first place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best and most original CD of 2008 so far., 4 May 2008
Idiosyncratic, quirky and utterly beguiling. Once you get past Matt's unique vocals you will fall deeply and completely in love with the fabulous tunes and heartfelt nature of every song. Sometime joyous at other times heartbreaking. Something about this album just draws you in a sits like an immovable object deep in your brain. These song will definately be my soundtrack for the summer of 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpectedly discovered gem, 28 Mar. 2007
This review is from: Joy (Audio CD)
I've been pretty infrequent on leaving reviews of late, just too much good music coming out frankly. However, just had to write about this one. Read about Campbell in the ST culture section and had a go; what a find! Echoes of Ryan Adams in his vocals I think (c Whisketown)and some gorgeous Ryan type melodies to boot. This will probably sink without trace like so much quality music overlooked by our pathalogically useless media. Campbell should move to the US straight away where his brand of emotion laden acoustic splendour would be eagerly devoured by americana radio there. An absolute GEM!! buy it and let the next CD roll.

4.0 out of 5 stars a real find, 24 April 2006
Bought this on the back of a glowing review in the Sunday Times. Described as an Essex based Ryan adams didnt fill me with huge expectations , but this guy can really write. The songs are solid and in many cases very hummable. probably more akin to Adams' rockier stuff and even up there with the near faultless Mathew Sweet; nonetheless Oliver has a knack

with lyrics and a vocal style best described as mid atlantic

as you would expect with this genre. The playing is first rate

and it would have been interesting to see what result could have been achived in the hands of a top quality producer and access to major studio time. This will grow with time even if it doesnt seduce you first time around; a delightful debut and will follow his career with interest.

cant find another better word to describe just how perfect the songwriting talents of this woman are. The songs just roll one into the next with sublime guitar playing and a world weary drawl of a vocal which reminds me of Lucinda Williams but ever so slightly off key. Evocative and powerful and not afraid to use the 'occasional' expletive to emphasize a lyric. Having thought she couldnt improve on 'Failer' she's gone and done just that.
