4.0 out of 5 stars Mega Manga Must Buy !, 18 May 2011
This review is from: Mega Manga (Paperback)
This is a really neat little book. Perfect for beginners or someone wanting to further fine tune their drawing skills.

Starting with learning the basic manga techniques of drawing, inking and colouring you will continue to use your newly acquired skills to create figures, facial features, monsters, pets etc of your own.

This is a nice thick book - 288 pages - that doesn't skimp on content and detailed instructions.
The instructions are easy to understand with plenty of examples to follow through the steps.

Overall its a nice little book that i've used often - its even been passed to both my niece and dad who have equally enjoyed it.

NYC BCN: Street Art Revolution

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice little coffee table book., 18 May 2011
I've got a whole ton of books on street art - this isn't the best but its probably one of the better ones out there just for the amount of images at least.

This pocket book is nice and thick - 637 pages - all in full colour and packed full of images.

Following examples from New York and Barcelona this collection has a short introduction before getting straight to it. Hundreds of examples - all varied - graffiti, stencils and stickers. Plenty to look at and get inspired with.

Its downfall is that artists, and locations, aren't identified so if you aren't familiar with the work it difficult to identify them.

More suited as a good coffee table book - you can keep picking it up and always find something new. However, I wouldn't pay more than a tenner for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars An alternative view on Street Art - Recommended, 18 May 2011
I have hundreds of books on graffiti, stencils and street art. This book - Street Renegades - is one of the only ones that focuses on all aspects on underground art, in particular sculptures, installations and street creativity that go beyond graffiti.

Many of the examples and artists explored use different techniques in their work; for example Slinkachu who uses tiny toy figurines to create an alternative universe amongst our own or Knitta who creates large knitted cosies for road signs, statues etc.

The artists explain they are drawn to the underground concrete and steel environments for the same reason as graffiti writers but uses it in different and surprising ways.

This is a nice little book - 200 illustrations/photographs in colour. Separated by artist each has a synopsis and short interview followed by the best examples of their work.

The book is varied and has enough content to keep you occupied for several reads. I would recommended it however my one critisim is that it could have been a little thicker.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a little dull - Get the DVD instead., 18 May 2011
This review is from: Yeah, I Said It (Paperback)
Its a shame - i love Wanda Sykes. I think she is hilarious but i was a little disappointed as unfortunately her humor doesn't translate very well into print.

I find this with a lot of comedians - the humor and magic often comes with the delivery, body language, timing of seeing someone live. Her DVD - Tongue Untied for example is spot on and recommended.

If you are a fan this book is probably worth a quick read - short chapters and easy to get through but i would borrow it from a friend or the library rather that part with your cash. If you are looking to spend - get a DVD - I think you would enjoy it more.

Do you like art ?
Shepard Fairey ?
OBEY ?
Books ?

If yes to any of these questions put a copy in your shopping trolley and checkout fast because this book is amazing.

A stunning 500 pages thick this is a heavy book and one that you will continue to read and return too. Plenty to read too as the images are accompanied with critics from several esteemed writers and from Shepard himself. This book feels even more special as it is special edition and hardcover.

Shepard Fairey is an superb artist and this book is a retrospective of his career over the last 20 years. Many designs you'll recognize (Obama poster during his campaign, the OBEY face etc) and many you won't. Either way you will love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saved my sanity and my sofa !, 18 May 2011
This book is a must for anybody looking to buy a puppy or with a troublesome dog to train. Victoria Stillwell is an expert and this book offers clear, practical and well explained advice throughout.

Having bought several books before getting our puppy this one was by far the favorite in the family. We've all read it from cover to cover and will keep it handy on the shelf to use again or pass on to friends.

The book is well organized with easy to follow training tips that work. My puppy is now happily doing what he's told - well most of the time !

Plenty of color photographs.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Happy Puppy - Two thumbs - and dog paws - up !, 18 May 2011
This review is from: Petstages Rag Rope Ball (Misc.)
This rag rope toy is superb - my 10 week old puppy adores it. If he could talk im positive he'd say its his favorite toy - its mine too. (I've already ordered another Petstages toy for him - the Chew Chain.)

The design is great - colorful, rugged enough not to get ripped to shreds and a really nice suitable size. Perfect for chewing or playing fetch with. Easy to clean.

Two thumbs - and dog paws - up !

Days Of Wonder Mystery Express
Days Of Wonder Mystery Express

3.0 out of 5 stars A Whodunit On Rails, 20 Jan. 2011
Im a huge fan of Days of Wonder board games - i have most of the Ticket to Ride series amongst others they have released. I was excited to get my hands on this game and was lucky enough to win a copy from a competition on the Days of Wonder website when the game was released.

Mystery Express is an imaginative deduction game. Players board the famous Orient Express in Paris just as the murder occurs. For the rest of the trip you travel through various locations; Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest and Istanbul trying to find out who, what, where and why the crime occurred. The one who correctly identifies the most elements of the crime by the time the train reaches its final destination wins. Simple. Almost.

Like all Days of Wonder games the quality of the game, its components and the design is outstanding. The artwork and illustrations are amazing and make the game feel like something special. There is a high price tag with this game but you can see where your money has been spent. I won't list the contents as it is mentioned in the description above.

The rules are complicated - this isn't the kind of game you can pick up in a few minutes. You will need to play a few times and get used to the gameplay and its tactics. I won't got into too much detail here as it'll confuse you but in brief here's a very quick run down ....

In the deck there are two of each card - crime cards (one of each; who, what, where, why and the time) are selected at random before the game starts and placed under the board for safe keeping. No peeking !

Each player gets 7 cards randomly picked from a shuffled deck with the rest going to two passengers and the conductor who will board the train later and affect the game. Still with me ? In addiction to the cards each player receives a ticket, notepad, telegram and character token that help to figure it all out. Ready to go.

Each character gets a special power that they can use once a round. Four of the players get to look at (once) a certain color of crime card when it is discarded. The fifth gets an extra hour for their investigation each round.

During each turn/destinations each player has 4-5 hours to turn up clues and solve the crime. This is done by visiting different carriages on the train where different actions are available. Each carriage has 1 or 2 actions that each take 1 hour or more to perform. After a player has used up his allotted hours, his turn ends and continues to the next player.

The end of the game varies to most deduction games - in most you must solve the crime precisely. This can be a little tedious as games can last forever. Where Mystery Express differs is that is has a timed ending with the player with the most correct deductions wins. In case of a tie Telegrams with predictions submitted at the half way point are used to determine a winner.

This is a long game - on average i'd say it lasts around 1 - 2 hours. This feels a little too much sometimes, especially when you are repeating actions and don't feel like you are getting any closer. Practice makes perfect.

In conclusion i'd recommend it, especially if you enjoy deduction games. It requires more skills that Cleudo and is good fun for an afternoon game session.

Have fun ! Hope this review if useful to you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best from Joseph Joseph, 20 Jan. 2011
Overall this is a nice looking set of chopping boards and knifes, admittedly they do have some faults but i do not regret buying them.

I have a small kitchen so space saving equipment is a must. I was impressed when i received these chopping boards and knifes as a gift. They are nicely packaged and look great when in the kitchen.

I have several Joseph Joseph products and have always been impressed with their quality. However i have been a little let down with this product - I'd agree that the surface of the boards is easy to mark, especially if using large serrated knifes or heavy chopping. Having said that i'd expect them to get a bit of wear and tear as they are chopping boards after all and are used regularly.

It redeems itself that you cant see the marks when the boards are in the holder - that still looks as good as new.

I haven't noticed that these boards slip - i have a wooden work-top. You could try a tea towel underneath if you have a granite work-top ?

These chopping boards do have good redeeming features - they are space saving, stylish, easy to clean and dishwasher safe. Overall i am satisfied but, having said that, if i was a more serious chef i would invest it a higher quality product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Out of date but worth a glance, 20 Jan. 2011
This is an American book aimed towards American's wishing to adopt. Im from the UK and found a lot of the content and advice irrelevant to me and the process in the UK.

Published in 1997 it is out of date and dry to read. Having said that, it is worth dipping in and out of as it does have some useful information that could benefit you - questions and answers on dealing with adoption, finance advice, information on the process and a good resources list.

There arent many books on the subject so despite its fault its worth a read on the subject.
