3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 28 Mar. 2016

A rather disappointing selection of poems all things considered and did not really live up to its name. I knew most of the poems anyway and didn't really feel that many of them were in the right categories in the book. But a good idea nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of Erica James' best books - no doubt about that, 28 Mar. 2016
This is one of Erica James' best books - no doubt about that. The characters really came alive and the story was unusual too. A minor criticism is that the section going back into the past is a little cumbersome but, even so, the quality of the writing and the plot more than make up for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of her best..., 14 Mar. 2016
Having read a number of books by Erica James, I do think that some are so-so whereas others are excellent. For me, this definitely fell into the latter category. Although the story - about a young woman finding her biological father - is by no means original, and indeed the plot is reasonably predictable, nevertheless the writing is good and it is compulsive reading. The characters are for the most part well defined and the descriptions of the emotions felt by the main characters are well above average for this genre. If you like Erica James, this is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb find, 14 Feb. 2016

A superb find..I stumbled across it by accident and thought I would try it as I really enjoy Priestley's plays. It is unusual in that the story is told through letters; I initially wondered whether this would be a bit contrived but it works really well. It is primarily a light romance and all the ends are tied up nicely at the end. The action mainly takes place in the Lake District (Farthing Hall is situated there) and London. The writing is stylish but nevertheless a light read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and one of the author's best, 27 Sept. 2015

This starts quite slowly and the reader does not initially warm to the heroine Clem. In fact, it takes a while to get into the book at all but then suddenly it seems to take over your life. The contrast between Portobello in London and Portofino in Italy works extremely well. OK - the plot demands quite a lot of willing suspension of disbelief and there is a loose end or two but none of this really matters as the narrative moves along compulsively. Karen Swan's books do not follow a typical tried and tested formula so you are left guessing until virtually the end. Oh and Claridges does feature twice and there is Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars a real find, compulsive reading...., 31 Aug. 2015

Having decided to give much of modern detective fiction with its brutality and sheer nastiness a miss for a while, I have turned to the so-called golden age of detective fiction and found a lot of it wanting. Not this though - it is well plotted and absolutely compulsive reading. It is a period piece but still remarkably fresh and doesn't feel dated at all. The twists and turns really keep you guessing. The detective Inspector French is likeable but, it has to be said, not a great character of a detective. However, I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not in the same league as her other books, 20 Jun. 2015

This is just not in the same league as her other books. The sex is dreadfully written, the main female characters are all mildly unpleasant, lack definition or any depth at all and for the most part are too similar to distinguish (apart from different jobs). The plot is frankly ridiculous even taking into account the willing suspension of disbelief. However, the locations are good and the descriptions of the clothes are excellent as always.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.., 14 May 2015

Not what I expected...I absolutely loved "The Four of Us" but found this to be very different. I was unimpressed by the romantic lead hitting the heroine for a start. However the imagined world of the super rich is very compelling and it is certainly an engrossing story which moves from New York to Europe at a fair old pace. There are a couple of twists in the story too.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very unusual book..., 12 Jan. 2014

Having finished this a couple of days ago, I am still pondering as to what my view of it is. I thought when I bought it that it would be a traditional detective story, but in fact it is not. The action takes place in both London and Paris and I would describe it as a thriller rather than a detective story, although it is not in the least like a modern thriller. It involves a hunt for a missing governess and has good pace, although the actual story is a bit far fetched. If you want to try something a bit different, I recommend this.
