2.0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere if you want a communicative guide to Arabic grammar., 13 Sept. 2014

Although I'm normally a fan of these books for grammar practice, this one lacks imagination. The language points that it covers are all very useful, as pronouns and prepositions is an area I've needed lots of help.

However, the exercises are truly terrible, mostly just translation of some kind. And as many others have said, the book takes a very dated grammatical approach, with grammar explained largely by grammatical metalanguage rather than examples from real communication. It doesn't include help on pronunciation when introducing new language... which is terrible, as it is in fact a distinguishing point in, for example على and عليّ.

Look elsewhere if you want a communicative guide to Arabic grammar.

This fantastic reader really bridges the gap in the market for Arabic resources. I've been learning Arabic for several years, and have never been able to find such a good skills-based resource to improve reading in Arabic script.

Seeing as there is also complete audio tracks of every text on the McGrawHill website, I've been doing dictations to improve listening skills and then checking my version against the book version to see where I had gaps in my knowledge. It enjoy the texts and the vocabulary and structures visited throughout are invaluable to any beginner to pre-intermediate student. This way you practise reading, writing and listening - the perfect self-study resource. Furthermore, the texts are interesting - taking you on a journey through the Arab world - of various authentic formats - blogs, postcards, letters, story, biography - and well pitched for elementary to pre-intermediate students.

I couldn't recommend the book highly enough. For the tiny sum of money you pay for it, you can get hundreds of hours of enjoyable, varied and effective language practice. Don't hesitate!
