As Good As It Gets - The Best Of Gene
As Good As It Gets - The Best Of Gene
Price: £6.21

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest band you've never heard of., 14 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fantastic compilation from one of britains best kept musical secrets.Unjustly and lazily labelled as a smiths wannabe band by those talentless tossers of the british music press, who didn't have the good sense to realise that you could love both bands.Gene boasted a brilliant charismatic front man,and a great guitarist at least the equal of Marr and Morrisey in my opinion. Also a very tight rhythm section, and brilliant beautiful anthemic songs of great wit and intelligence.I like the smiths, but i love gene,it's a criminal bloody tragedy that they didn't become massive and get the respect they rightly deserved.Thankfully people are starting to become aware of their back catalogue, and just what an important band they were, and could have been if they hadn't split.Take the music press with a massive pinch of salt,if they could cut it in the music industry, they wouldn;t be stuck behind a word processer slagging off talented bands.IGNORE them and you be the critic, you know as much as they do,probably more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not quite complete, but pretty bloody close., 14 July 2015

The best overview currently available of a band that were the biggest in europe for four or five years. This double disc dvd brought back so many fantastic memories for this old mod,and also a few sad and bad ones too. They really were something special, and the gigs were truly phenomenal, full of passion, and raw aggression, like a force of nature really.Buy this, you WILL love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB LIVE DVD FROM A SUPERB BAND., 14 July 2015
This review is from: Gene Live [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
A fantastic live dvd by the greatest band you've never heard of. I bought this about three weeks ago, after buying their best of compilation called As Good As It Gets.I wanted to see if they could cut it live, the true test of any really great band.I needn't have worried cos Gene are a fantastic live act.I am just gutted that i discovered this band when they had split, and it was too late to see them in concert. My only criticism-i would have forgone the extras disc in favour of a longer main gig,cos they really are that good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Talented band,lots of potential.BUT., 16 April 2015
This review is from: Snapshot (Audio CD)
Firstly let me say,i only discovered this band by chance while searching for live blues gigs on youtube.I found their cologne gig and was very impressed by their musicianship and stagecraft. So although not owning this album,i know all the songs and several more of their catalogue.I absolutely love raw guitar/harmonica based r and b ala Feelgoods,Yardbirds, early Fleetwood Mac etc,and these lads do this stuff incredibly well.My only reservation is that although i love this type of music myself,i think it must be very confining and restrictive for a young and creative band. The Feelgoods, nine below zero, bluesband etc made a good living from this genre, and whenever i got the chance i saw them live and l loved every minute. But i would bet my life that on their second album, there will be record company pressure put on the strypes to change their sound,to appeal to a much larger audience and sell more albums.Going by the latest tracks i've heard, and a recent interview i saw with their lead guitarist/songwriter,i'm guessing that the second album will be a much heavier affair than snapshot. It will be very interesting to see whether they stay true to their blues roots,or their ambitions lie in Oasis style stadium rock in the future.Good debut album,i enjoyed it,3/5 for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation,great guitarist,great band., 7 Sept. 2014
A Superb album from the Mac when they were a blues band,Peter Green was a genius of a a guitarist with a really gorgeous tone, that was immediately recognisable, great singer too.Yes there are some glaring omissions from this collection, both parts of Oh Well, and Green Mannalishi among them. But if you buy this and the extended version of Then Play On,you have all your Fleetwood Mac blues/rock bases pretty much covered i reckon. The only downside to this compilation for me is the jeremy spencer fixation with Elmore James, these tracks could have been ommited for some others, like Broken Wings or Dragonfly etc.I've always found with Elmore and Bo Diddley that if you have heard one of their songs, then you have heard them all.But thats just a minor gripe, and i play and really enjoy this album a lot.Great british blues, from a great british band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolute power corrupts absolutely., 7 Sept. 2014
A very informative oral history of a fascinating band.I finished it in a week and enjoyed it very much. While i enjoyed Zep's bluesey offerings from the first few albums,i found their later stuff too overblown and pretentious for my tastes. So even though i'm not a Zep fanatic,i have no hesitation in recommending this book to any serious rock fan.But for hardcore fans of the band be warned,Page and Bonham are really shown in a shocking light,as they ride roughshod over the sycophantic toadies and countless hangers-on that don't possess the balls to say no and stand up to them.I would dearly love to read an in depth study of Deep Purple thats as entertaining as this book by Barney. 4 stars for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rory's live ROCK album., 30 Aug. 2014
This remastered version is a great improvement on my original copy. The mix on that one was just horrible,a muddy dirge that almost buried the masters strat expertise.Actually i was so peed off with it,that i gave it to a mate and forgot about it.Then last year another mate and massive Rory fan lent me his new remastered copy, and i was so impressed that i bought my own. This is Rory's live ROCK album,it's raw and it's fast and it's heavy. There is very little of Rory the bluesman on show here, but hey,us fans have live in europe and irish tour 74 to cater for our needs as well. This is a great cd,it's the wizard playing live after all,but personally speaking it's my third favourite rory live cd behind Irish Tour and Live in Europe. That said,it's still an essential purchase for any serious rock fans cd collection. 4 stars for me.

Live! In Europe
Live! In Europe

5.0 out of 5 stars His second finest live album., 30 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Live! In Europe (Audio CD)
The only 3 cd's i still own by Rory [and i've owned 95% of his back catalogue over the years] are his live albums. His studio work like Thin Lizzy's could never capture that raw power and adrenaline rush they gave you when you saw them onstage. This is a terrific live album, second only to his Irish tour 74 cd,and better than the very good remastered version of Stagestruck. This cd has the massive added bonus of two of my favourite Rory tracks-Hoodoo Man and the gorgeous version of What In The World included this time, and greatly adds to the original cut of the album. The only downside for me on this album is the inclusion of Pistolslapper Blues.I'm sure i'm in the minority of Rory fan's but i've never liked this track.Live and on this disc,it always seemed to ruin the natural flow of the performance. To recap,in my opinion,i would just buy Rory's live albums, they showcase the man at his absolute maximum best.I only wish i could see him play live one more time,he really was something very very special was Rory Gallagher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lizzy live gem for a fiver., 30 Aug. 2014
Really enjoyed this dvd, Two hours and 19 tracks of Lizzy doing what they did best. Was great to have some live concert footage from the White/Wharton years for my collection. Not as good as the live and dangerous dvd from the rainbow, but a close second for me as it's an hour longer. To sum up,it's LIZZY.It's Live, and it's an absolute bargain for a fiver.

5.0 out of 5 stars LIZZY'S MASTERPIECE., 29 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Live And Dangerous (Audio CD)
The best live album ever recorded in my opinion, and one of my holy trinity along with live at leeds by the Who and Irish tour 74 by Rory Gallagher. The best ever LIZZY line-up doing what they did better than almost any other band.None of the studio albums came close to capturing the real power and glory of Phil and the boys onstage, but this cd does it perfectly. What a band and what a frontman.Buy this,5 stars easy.
