5.0 out of 5 stars A perfectly written and acted psychological insight into mental disorders., 19 April 2012

This review is from: Girl, Interrupted [DVD] (DVD)
This review is coming from a person who has not read the book. A lot of things are different from the book which is a factual account of a real person. Certain scenarios in the film are added in for dramatisation. This a side the film is not a bad film at all. It is an extremely captivating film that moves the audience. Focusing on the lives of a group of girls in a mental hospital during the 1960s. The cast are exceptional. Winona Ryder gives a excellent lead performance of a girl who suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. She cannot tell whether she deserves to be surrounded by people who seem a lot more insane than she is and she is also very 'inside' and avoids confrontation. She befriends her complete opposite, the sociopathic Lisa. Lisa is portrayed by the astounding Angelina Jolie who in my opinion steals the whole film. Her performance as a sociopath is chilling and intriguing. This film really proves Jolie's skills as an actress. Lisa is surrounded by a group of girls who are afraid and hiding behind masks, this aggravates Lisa who strives for truth and honesty in the world and will 'push people's buttons' in order to get this. Jolie's performance is heartbreaking at times and is defiantly well worth her Oscar win for this role. The late Brittany Murphy also features in this film as a co-star. She plays the bulimic and self-harming Daisy. Even though she doesn't feature as much as Ryder or Jolie her performance is still worth recognition. She also gives a heart-wrenching performance that is defiantly the saddest of all in the film. In all, this film is perfectly shot, written and brilliantly acted. A worthy watch for anyone who enjoys films about psychology or just a really good drama film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A flawless masterpiece of cinema about life. A 'must-see', 19 April 2012

This is easily one of the best movies ever made and probably one of the last. This film came out in 1999 and is easily the best movie from the 90s but I would also put it up there with classics from the rest of the early to mid 20th century. No film in the 2000s has compared to this. There really is no detailed in-depth story behind this film as a whole because it follows different people throughout their lives so it has multiple synopsis'. All I can say is that it is about life. Life in general. The film focuses on people and their day to day lives. It features people who feel trapped in their own lives. A man estranged from reality and in doubt. A materialistic mother and wife. A self conscious daughter. A fake and vain friend. A boy who sees the world differently to everyone else. In some way or another there is one character that the audience can relate to or can see relations to people they know in real life. Not only does this film have amazing cinematography and a brilliantly written script, but the performances from all of the cast are excellent. Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening give an astonishing performance as the average dysfunctional marriage both worthy of their Oscar nominations for this film (Kevin winning his). The younger actors are also great Thora Birch, Wes Bentley and Mena Suvari all give accurate perspectives of different types of typical teenagers. In all, the cast is perfect. In conclusion American Beauty is well worth watching. It is one of those films that you will watch and wish you could watch all over again not knowing what happens. I wish more movies were like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning film to experience on Blu Ray, 5/5*, 2 July 2011

TV watched on: 32" LG 32LD490 (HD READY TV)
Blu Ray player: LG BD555 Blu Ray Player (Connected with a HDMI cable)
The film itself is incredible, a very worthy remake of a horror classic and 10 times better then most of the horror remakes made after it. Anyway, less about the movie and more about the Blu Ray. This film looks stunning in 1080p in contrast to 480p on the DVD version(which I also have). Every detail is pin sharp, including facial shots where you can see the finest details (e.g. hair, sweat etc.). Landscape shots look excellent and vivid. All in all the picture looks great. Horror films are perfect for Blu Ray, it helps enhance the experience a horror film gives the viewer, with the gruesome details more sharper then on a DVD and the terrifying sounds much more clearer too, it makes you feel like you're right inside the movie.
All in all a great film to experience on Blu Ray and with a reasonable price, it is most definitely worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece beautifully restored for High Definition viewing, 1 July 2011

This review is going to be more about the Blu Ray side of things. The film in general is legendary and my favourite film ever personally, visually the film is stunning and the acting is superb, featuring some amazing actors (Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder etc.). Now for review of the Blu Ray version. I have the original DVD version which is very basic and has no special features at all which I found highly disappointing. The Blu Ray version does have a featurette which contains cast interviews and in sight into the making of the film which I found very good. It also includes original theatrical trailers and commentaries. In comparison to the DVD version this version has much more to offer. I personally think they should of released a 20th anniversary edition of the film which would had much more special features but for the time being this version is reasonable. As far as the resolution of the film, I think the remastering of the film is amazing considering this film, is 20+ years old now. I was a little hasty about how much of a difference it would be to the standard 480p version and wondered if it would be worth buying a film I already have on DVD, but I was not dissapointed with the new 1080p version. The colours are much more vivid and the picture quality is superb, you can see much more detail in facial shoots and a lot more in landscape shots.
All in all a great film to experience on Blu Ray and for the price it is now, a bargain.

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but misleading to newer MJ fans, 1 Jun. 2011
This review is from: The Collection (Audio CD)
Although this idea is very good. This box set isn't really a 'complete' collection. It's missing MJ's HIStory(1995) album. Plus this collection gives off the impression to people who are only just getting into MJ's music that 'Off The Wall'(1979) is his first studio album, when it isn't. I think 'Got To Be There'(1972), 'Ben'(1972), 'Music & Me'(1973) and 'Forever, Michael'(1975) all deserve to be in this collection as well as all the newer albums. You wouldn't have a second album if you didn't have a first? Right?
Good idea, just don't waste your money if you think you're getting a 'complete' Michael Jackson collection.
