5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable turn-of-the 20th century drama, 16 April 2017

One of the most delicious period dramas ever made. In terms of Granada productions, it's right up there with 'Jewel In The Crown' and 'Brideshead Revisited'. Ford Madox Ford's masterpiece is brought brilliantly to the screen in the kind of drama where every word and every gesture is loaded with nuance and importance. Stunning performances from Susan Fleetwood as the much put-upon Leonora and Jeremy Brett as the good soldier himself. It's like Henry James and Edith Wharton, but with very dark humour: at once both tragic and hilariously stiff-upper-lip funny. Watch this before you die.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential piano trio jazz, 16 April 2017

An unmissable opportunity to get Herbie Nichols' legendary albums for Blue Note at a very reasonable price. Nichols' marvellous angular compositions may not be as memorable as Monk's, but their comparative unfamiliarity offers something almost as rewarding. Add to that the poignancy of hearing someone almost totally overlooked in his lifetime in living, breathing stereo and you can't go far wrong with this. Essential in my 'umble.

5.0 out of 5 stars A polished literary adaptation, 18 Nov. 2015

Loved this film. A quiet unpretentious telling of an affecting tale with grace, style and compassion. Some fine performances from a cast chosen with evident care - and including the delicious Natasha McElhone, which can't be bad. I'd not read any of John Banville's novels before, but this film has certainly prompted me to investigate them (and to visit Wexford one day!). Highly recommended for anyone who loves polished literary adaptations.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'For mystery lies here/Hidden in the stone', 2 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Fragments (Paperback)
Poetry for me has always been more about academic study than bedside reading. But I've had this particular volume by my bed for months for periodic dips when I need something thoughtful and stimulating about our human condition. Given their respective backgrounds, it's not an immediately obvious partnership - because Hamilton Hill the Brit and his American co-author, Rain Heron, have only really the Arts, a French Connection and a sense of spirituality in common - but it works extremely well. Almost like two DJs trading tracks consecutively (but a lot quieter). Quiet is the operative word, because these poems - full of profound observations about love, life and the universe and tinged with humour at times and an affecting sense of melancholia at others - seem to be commonly about finding peace and quiet and some kind of serenity within the chaos of modern life. As one reviewer has already suggested, Ingmar Bergman would surely have enjoyed these poems. I'm sure you will, too.

Meeting With Aoratos: Revelations of a God
Meeting With Aoratos: Revelations of a God

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra-ordinary entertainment, 24 April 2014
'Isn't it absurd when the greatest wonder is that you are here, standing upon this planet floating through the void with but one simple duty, to avoid hurting others, knowing that thoughts are powerful, vibrant, eternal energy...' Jamie and Jane are just a couple of ordinary sheep farmers going quietly about their daily business - until a visit from a playful god who takes on various guises opens up a new dimension to existence. If you can imagine a cross between a Socratic dialogue, a philosophical novel by Robert Pirsig (of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' fame) and some inspired Flann O'Brien lunacy, you might approximate what Howard Baker's off-the-wall book seems to be about. A very entertaining read that challenges you to look at life in quite a different way, it's funny, wise, thought-provoking and quite dotty.

Chris Farlowe had one of those voices that would have sent X-Factor audiences into mass hysteria soon after he opened his mouth. Simon and the others would have given him a Yes with knobs on. Lest one forget, buy this inexpensive reminder. The particularly fine and unusual version of 'Paint It Black' was a very nice surprise.

Very Best Of The Lovin' Spoonful
Price: £5.12

4.0 out of 5 stars A spoonful of sugar, 6 Sept. 2013

A basic compilation that could have been a little fuller and more imaginative, but a good and inexpensive reminder of what a fine group The Lovin' Spoonful were. John Sebastian is an oft overlooked songwriter almost out of the top drawer. 'Summer In The City' still takes some beating.

Well, they're just about all here, so you can't say much fairer than that. On reflection, though, I would have gone for something with 12" versions of the irresistible 'I'm A Wonderful Thing' and 'Me No Popi'. Never mind, this'll do nicely for now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Razor-sharp dialogue, 6 Sept. 2013

This is one of those films that I could watch over and over again without getting tired of. The script is brilliant and the dialogue between J.J. (Lancaster) and Sydney (Curtis) is corruscating. Both actors' performances are arguably their finest. And it's astonishing to think that Alexander McKendrick could translate from Ealing comedy (the masterful 'The Ladykillers') to Hollywood drama with such apparent ease. Watch, listen and nod sagely when someone suggests that they don't make 'em like this any more.
