5.0 out of 5 stars The only book a girl will ever need!, 6 Mar. 2015

This book should be given to every aspiring model who is serious about developing a real career, and every young girl who thinks it sounds like a cool idea! It should certainly be in every secondaryy school library!
Ms de Bauch clearly has a brain, and uses it to good effect in her advice and the entertaining clarity of her prose. This is definitely no ghost-written bit of self-publicity by an air-head!
Her advice ranges from good nutrition and beauty advice (not in thrall to some high-price cosmetics company), to dealing with scams and incompetent photographers (some of which have agenda other than photography!), how to run your own business and tax affairs, and (VERY importantly) how to stay safe in a world where men can take advantage of feminine naivete, particularly girls under 18. As a parent of a daughter myself, I was impressed with the thorough and sensible way she deals with this and other topics which make a mother's blood run cold, like smoking and drinking, tattoos, surgery, and even working in pornography. Advice ranges from how to apply false eyelashes to visiting the National Gallery to pick up posing ideas, and ends with "Anita's ten-minute leaving-the-house makeover".
I can't see how any aspect of modelling is not covered here, and of course the whole is illustrated with impressive photographs of the author, who has worked with some top people.
I have titled my review "the only book a GIRL will ever need", but I imagine that much of the advice given could also apply to MALE models ....
My only gripe is that I don't like the type-face - close-spaced sans serif is a bit tiring to read, but it looks modern and approachable, and content-wise you certainlly get your money's worth!
Excellent. Highly recommended.

The Blue Field (Brensham Trilogy)

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic of English country life, 5 Mar. 2015

Bought this trilogy on Kindle to have it always by me. They are 3 of my all-time favourite books, and I have read them over and over since I first discovered them about 45 years ago - superbly well-written, and the evocation of life in a provincial town and its surrounding villages between thhe wars is just wonderful. They are novels, technically, but really they are the autobiography of a great writer and a great man, who should be better-known than he is. This last volume IS a novel, in that the author's voice doesn't appear quite so strongly, and the main character is entirely fictional. It's probably the weakest of the three (the others are Portrait of Elmbury and Brensham Village, by the way), but that isn't saying much - it's still great!

If you enjoy books like Lark Rise, Cider with Rosie, or even Miss Read's stories, you will like this!

Quite well-written, and a clever idea - just SO short! I knew it wasn't a full-length novel, but it literally took me 10 minutes to read, and left me feeling rather unsatisfied. I got to the end unexpedtedly soon, and thought, "Oh! Is that IT?"
The idea of fictional characters appearing in the real world as real people, (or the other way round, with real people suddenly finding themselves in a fictional world), is hardly new, but I think the author could have done more with this. Morse is a complex character, and we all felt sorry for him as potential romance after potential romance failed, and his one great love from the past killed herself, yet this author made him very thin, character-wise. It feels as though the author doesn't really KNOW either Morse, or Colin Dexter, well enough to present them as fully-fleshed-out characters, and so the reader is left thinking it's all a bit trite and silly - and it IS silly, of course, but when you read a good story you suspend your disbelief. My opinion is that the author wasted a good idea by not exploring it thoroughly. For example, what sort of relationship does an author have with his creation? If that creation is a very strong character, who has appeared in a whole string of books, it might be really interesting. She says they are "old friends" - well, yes, AND??? Shame.

Bit papery and not very ribbon-y, if you see what I mean! I have had rolls of florists' ribbon before, and it was much more like cloth, and easy to tie bows, split into narrower strips, etc. So - it's OK,but not great.Colour a bit on the dull side.

Perfect for my purposes, and does what it says on the tin. Stain resistant, practically dry when it comes out of the washing machine, doesn't need ironing, and cheap - what more do you want?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful account of English country life., 5 Feb. 2015

One of my all-time favourite books, this is an utterly charming autobiographical novel, set in an English country town, between the wars. John Moore was a native of "Elmbury" (Tewkesbury), and writes about the people and places with total conviction and love, and in the most wonderful literate, poetic prose. The characters positivley leap from the page, Moore's love and knowledge of the countryside is obvious, and if you enoyed Lark Rise, you will enjoy this too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit disappointed, 5 Feb. 2015

The ribbon was not made of the material I expected. It was very stiff and papery, and also the tartan pattern is only on one side, so it is impossible to tie a bow so that it looks good. Probably works as actual florists' ribbon, as they tend to use staplers. Not really suitable for gift wrapping, in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Total reading pleasure, 5 Feb. 2015

The Brensham Trilogy (of which this is the second book), has been one of my favourite reads for years and years. To me, it is REAL writing - literate, flowing, and with a wonderful poetic vocabulary. Although defined as novels, (John Moore has changed names and places to protect the innocent!), they are really autobiography. Moore writes with such love for these places and people, and makes them come to life so vividly, the books are totally irresistable. He was a real countryman, and wrote several books on natural history and country pursuits. I am lucky enough to live near "Elmbury" (Tewkesbury), where he spent his childhood, and can visualise the scenes in the books so well. If you enjoy tales of the English countryside - for example, Lark Rise to Candleford, which is a similar autobiographical novel - you will love these. The time period is between the wars.

Just fantastic - I absolutely love it. He was an amazingly good singer and interpreter of traditional songs, and as a fan you could not possibly fail to enjoy this. If you're not certain, however, then you need to bear in mind it is all unaccompanied, and mostly just HIM. There are 2 or 3 tracks where the rest of the Watersons join in the chorus, to great effect of course. Their "wall of sound" is wonderful.
