5.0 out of 5 stars Superb device - but read this if using with BT internet...., 16 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fire TV Stick (Electronics)
Very impressive device, with a highly usable and well thought out remote. First impressions on opening - slight disappointment that it requires an additional power supply - I hoped it would get sufficient from HDMI socket. However the little power brick it comes with is really compact and elegant, and they say it is just need for 'best performance' - though it died when I unplugged the power lead so it is probably vital if your particular HDMI socket is unable to supply sufficient power.

The next obstacle was configuring it to work with my wi-fi via the standard BT Hub router. It picked up the signal immediately, and I entered the BT wi-fi password, and although it initially appeared to connect, it wouldn't proceed further as it said it could not connect with amazon.co.uk and kept returning me to the 'Enter your wi-fi password' screen. I repeated this a few times to prove Einstein's claim that insanity is doing the same thing while expecting a different result. I logged in to the BT hub, and it showed the Fire TV stick was connected, but the stick itself remained blissfully unaware of this fact and wouldn't play at all. Much googling later and I found the answer. You need to use your computer to login to the BT router/hub - try entering 192.168.1.254 into your browser (something Einstein never managed to do, so that restored the ego a little) and login as 'admin'. You will need the admin password from the card on the back of the BT hub/router. Select Advanced Settings, read the blurb then select 'Proceed to Advanced Settings', then Home Network, then Smart Setup. Turn Smart Setup off. exit the page. Then re-try connecting the Fire TV stick with the normal BT wi-fi password - hopefully all will work well from then on.

Once working, the speed and image quality is superb. I have moderate wi-fi speed of 5mbs, and the image quality and responsiveness is superb. The stick was preconfigured with my details and PIN, which reduced a lot of setting up other than connecting to wi-fi. The remote control works really well - better dare I say than Apple TV as it makes use of a few buttons to really speed the process of navigating and entering info. I've yet to use the iPhone app, but it looks intuitive and includes voice control, so no need to buy the separate voice control unit.

It's obviously early days for a brand new device, but first impressions are that it is an extremely high quality unit, with excellent access to Netflix, iPlayer and all sorts of other channels as well as the impressive Amazon Prime collection of media. 10/10 to Amazon - good concept and executed well. Happy bunny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 14 May 2014

Seriously bright, and nice quality of light. No these will not save as much energy as lesser wattage bulbs, but if you occasionally miss the pleasure of a 100W incandescent bulb that can fill a room with light, then this is a great option. Unlike many 'energy saver' bulbs, the quality of the light is really good - no greenish tinge or disappointing colour, just lovely bright white light - really top notch and the first credible alternative to incandescents I've found. If you ever feel a bit disappointed with light from an eco-bulb, try these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine but, 14 May 2014

These are fine, very nice colour, and very soft. They are thinner than I was expecting and don't feel especially durable. They are also fairly small - check the measurements - so if you are looking for a huge wrap-around towel this is not the right one. On the other hand, they are decent quality, very respectable looking and soft so well worth considering. If you want to impress with a bit of wow factor, you will almost certainly want larger and heavier grade towels than these.

3.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fine, 14 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is absolutely fine - looks ok and is comfortable. It does seem to be a bit on the thin side and is a long way short of the feel (and price) of top quality linen. For everyday cheep & cheerful it is good value and recommended. If you are out to impress, it may be worth spending quite a bit more to get the highest quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, hard wearing, 14 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This looks good, wears well, and is tolerant of a certain amount of abuse (e.g. being scrunched into bottom of suitcase and still looking ok afterwards). People have actually noticed it and said how nice it looks, which is such a novelty for me that I bought 2 more in different colours. I love living on the edge...

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely good value and sound, 14 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm really pleased with this - a great way to charge the phone and boost the sound. Sound quality is very good, not brilliant, but on a par with a decent quality portable radio. Music devotees may miss the lack of oomph in the bass, but overall the sound is surprisingly good and for the price it is fantastic. I've bought 3 of these units now (!) as I keep one in my bedroom, another for the kitchen, and one in my weekend retreat (shed).

The lightning connector suits the latest iPhone 5 series from 2012 onwards. If you have an older phone or other device, it has a USB socket that will play and charge other devices if you have the normal USB lead. It also has a 3.5mm socket if you want to connect a device by that type of cable.

I haven't used the battery power on this, but it takes 4 AAA batteries and is supposed to last 5 hours on a fully charged set.

I am surprised by the reports that it doesn't work with an alarm in the morning, or doesn't connect to iPhone 5c. Mine works fine for both.

5.0 out of 5 stars How jeans ought to be, 14 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These are my second pair of Lee jeans, and I'm very pleased with them both. The material is tough and high quality, it doesn't seem to wear at all quickly unlike virtually all other jeans I've had in the past few years. They look really good and are comfortable. If you are between sizes you may want to try the size higher, otherwise the normal size should be fine. The price is reasonable, they look good, and they seem to last extremely well, so all in all an excellent pair of jeans that you won't have to throw away after 6 months when they're at their most comfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by low price - the best wok you can get, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What a wonderful, fabulous, outstanding wok this is! A real pleasure to use, simple, basic, but as good as they get. Being iron, it has excellent natural non-stick properties which are greatly improved by seasoning. It also is light, and conducts heat extremely evenly and fast, and is incredibly responsive on a gas hob. Seasoning is very simple, though it takes a little time and effort the first time. However, the result is a supremely non-stick wok, that can be safely heated to a far higher temperature than any teflon-type pan, which therefore cooks far better and actually stir-fries rather than stir boils. The difference in taste is remarkable. Unless you already have one, you do need a wok stand to provide stable support on the hob. I got the Wok stand s/s 25.5cm/10" Guaranteed quality which is inexpensive and absolutely fine.

It is really important to season this first, which will require about 20 minutes of your time over 6 hours or so. This is time well spent. The excellent review by Queequeg gives full instructions and is worth following as precisely as possible as it will give the most amazing non-stick coating. Essentially you need to clean the wok, dry throughly, then use a paper towel to rub the thinnest possible coating of vegetable oil over both sides of the wok, about 1/2 tsp oil per side, then bake the wok upside down in a hot oven (180 C) for a couple of hours. Remove, recoat with oil, and bake in a hotter oven for another hour (230 C). Repeat process again (apart from washing) for best results. You should only ever need to do this once, as from then on regular cooking will reinforce the patina. There are different views on the best oil to use, but any bland cooking oil other than olive oil is likely to be ok, and some writers say you get a better result if you use a different oil or even beef dripping for the second repetition of the seasoning process. I don't think it matters too much, and any cooking oil should be fine so long as the first stage in the oven is NOT hot enough to make the oil smoke, but the second stage is. Olive oil isn't recommended because it has a strong flavour and a very low smoking point, so doesn't develop such a good patina.

Having seasoned the pan, you have the most wonderful non-stick wok that is brilliant for stir fries. Although people advise against cooking acidic foods in pans like this that require a patina of carbonised oil to be non-stick, I use mine regularly for making tomato or bolognese sauce, as the high heat and wide surface area is great for reducing sauces fast. If rinsed clean afterwards, it doesn't seem to do any harm. If it does, just give it a good blast of heat after adding a thin coat of oil, and it will soon be good again.

To wash after use, just rinse in v hot water, perhaps with a tiny bit of washing up liquid if the mood takes you, then dry (on the hob to save towels) and give a light smear with oil if possible (should be ok if you forget the oil provided it is really dry). If someone does overzealously clean the pan, or if you get little bits of rust, you may need to top up the seasoning with a bit more oil & heat, but in normal usage it really is very tolerant of metal utensils and even acidic foods such as tomatoes. The wok is supposed to look dark brown and discoloured, so it may not appeal to those who love all their pans to be shiny & gleamy. But for those who love a superb pan that cooks brilliantly, you really can't get a better wok at any price.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as original (which it probably is), 5 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hard water had finished off our previous element and caused the washing machine to stop working. Fortunately I was able to diagnose the problem on the web, and found this replacement via Amazon. The price was much less than the same part from a well-known spare-parts site, and far cheaper than buying the official Bosch version or calling a plumber. Overall, it took maybe 30 minutes if that to replace the original, all very easy procedure with clear instructions available on web. I could see no visible difference between this and the original part, and certainly would recommend it as a top quality component that is probably exactly the same as the official version. It was very easy to replace on our Bosch washing machine, which has worked flawlessly ever since. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor build quality - broke after a few uses, 5 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found the sound quality of these was fine - no problems at all. However, on their 3rd outing I noticed the sound was becoming rather crackly, and suspected a loose wire. However, a few more outings later I noticed the entire earpiece had cracked and was broken and unusable. I had not subjected them to any unreasonable treatment - just kept them in my sportsbag the same as my previous Sennheiser pair which lasted 4+ years of the same conditions. This pair barely lasted 2 weeks. Very unimpressed. Would not buy again.
