Freedom is a seamless robe, 23 July 2009
I've just finshed L M N O P and explained the wordplay to my 8 year old grand-daughter who is trying to find a better pangram than 'the quick brown fox...'and immediately saw that even losing one letter will'make things difficult'. What she won't see (yet) is the allegory of the development of tyranny by progressive restrictions of individual freedom that I feel is the core of the novel.
This is a funny, witty and serious novel, awesomely clever, deceptively simple, and terrifyingly serious. It has the depth of Animal Farm and the superficial approachability of Gulliver's Travels. It won't last like them I feel because of its overt cleverness of language, but for those who like fun and thought together it takes a lot of beating.
Please read it,and have the satisfaction of realising how many professional critics just didn't get it!
