3.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea, 29 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Revolution (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I wasn't grabbed by this book although it improved as it went along. It is the story of two boys growing up in a fictional Middle Eastern kingdom at the end of WW2, one of whom according to the author's postscript eventually becomes the country's president. The story starts when they are small boys and I find the writing style was almost written like a children's book. I don't know if the author was trying to be clever by writing it in this way but it wasn't for me. When one of the boys grows up and joins the army all the characters seem almost like caricatures of every dumb soldier you ever came across. When the actual revolution of the title kicks off the story picks up considerably but if I hadn't been reviewing it I probably would have given up before then. Piet Hein Woke comments that he wrote this is in English to reach a wider audience and therein may lie the problem.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hit and miss product, 18 Mar. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
At this price a lady would be justified in expecting good results but overall it didn't do much for my wife. On application she felt that it dried out the skin but she could feel it tightening uncomfortably.
It had no effect on dark circles under her eyes but it did however reduce the appearance of a furrow between her eyes. She only has fine lines at the side of her eyes upon which this has little visible effect but felt that it might be more obvious on deeper lines. She is lucky in that she had no puffiness to test it on.
The lotion is applied with a spatula attached to the lid and held inside the bottle and smells like glue. It dries white and may not be suitable for ladies of a darker hue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good TP-Link smart product., 17 Mar. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My wife has long wanted a dimmer in our dining room but it would have meant chopping out the wall for a deeper switch box so this little gem keeps her happy and allows me to add another feature to my Amazon Echo.
The bulb itself is quite substantial but it looks good in an opaque white glass with all the electronics contained in a plastic sleeve above it.
TP-Link package these very well in an Apple inspired box where the bulb is snugly held for transport.
Set up was very simple, turn it on and use the Kasa app to add it to your network. Once added just find it in your Alexa app and its all systems go. I would suggest you don't name it 'diner' as I did as Aleax will confuse it with 'timer'.
Another issue if using it in a pendant fitting as I have is that people will keep trying to turn it on and off from the wall. I have replaced the light switch with an attractive blanking plate. In a pendant fitting it looks like any other conventional bulb of this type.
Dimming the bulb through Alexa offers you the options of 100%, 75%, 25% and 1% brightness however if you go into your Kasa app there is a sliding scale to dim it to any percentage.
The only downside is that I haven't figured out a voice command to brighten the light. It is however advertised as a 'dimmable' bulb so perhaps it can't be brightened by voice control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over Holmes you charlatan!, 12 Mar. 2017
This review is from: Arrowood (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have always thought that Sherlock Holmes was a bit pretentious and so does Arrowood the star of this gritty Victorian detective drama set in the squalid streets of South London. With his faithful assistant Barnett he provides investigative services to the less well off folk on the underside of the city. In this debut outing the pair are employed reluctantly by an attractive French woman to track down her missing brother Thierry. Unfortunately he worked at a restaurant owned by their arch enemy Cream, a South London crime lord who has already threatened to kill them due to an earlier investigation that still haunts them both.
There is no glamour in this part of London. This is the London of Hogarth where the poor drown their sorrows in mugs of gin and opium is the most common painkiller. The poor live in squalor and are preyed upon by the criminals amongst whom they live and the fledgling Metropolitan Police are still weak and ineffective. Arrowood and Barnet are their only hope of justice and some of what they deal out isn't strictly legal.
This book is very well written with a gritty authenticity that can only come from good research by the author.
This is not usually my type of book or preferred era but I can't wait for the next one.

Price: £3.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Small and fiddly internal fittings, 5 Mar. 2017

This is the rocker switch you need if replacing one on a lamp that has a thicker cable than the thin 5amp stuff. That said it still took me half an hour to swap over because the firings are so small and fiddly, glasses were required.

Still for me simply the best Pop Tart flavour, sweet but not too sweet, the pastry has an almost savoury touch to it.

The Freedom Broker (Thea Paris 1)
The Freedom Broker (Thea Paris 1)
by K. J. Howe
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.78

3.0 out of 5 stars Very lightweight holiday reading, 5 Mar. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book reads like the screenplay for a low budget straight to DVD action movie. The opening chapter where the team rescues a kidnap victim from a camp in the jungle sets the scene for a good read but it goes downhill from there. The characters are all like American TV characters with glamorous lives and glamorous lifestyles. For example 'He pushed himself off the floor and glanced at his Stocker and Yale P650 watch'. Jack Reacher would have glanced at his watch, we don't need to be name dropped the Special Forces timepiece ( I had to Google it).
The sex scene on the plane was completely gratuitous and felt like it had been slipped in to satisfy an editorial demand.
I won't continue to criticise this book because Ms Howe can undeniably write which is more than most of us can do but I do feel she could write a lot better material than this.

Mia & Mimi Women's Abbie Jacket, Black, Medium
Mia & Mimi Women's Abbie Jacket, Black, Medium
Price: £6.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Photos don't do it justice, 4 Mar. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As a medium this jacket comes up on the smaller side but still fits a size 14, perhaps a 16 if you don't do it up.
The jacket looks much nicer in real life than the photos can show but it is an accessory rather than a clothing item. Being made of lace you wouldn't wear it for protection from the elements and I would suggest you choose your jewellery carefully because it could easily snag.
That said this review item came with no snags or pulls whatsoever . The lace is well trimmed with decorative elasticated cuffs, waistband and collar and will look great over a solid colour top to show off the lace pattern.

This is a very attractive slouch beanie in a subtle glittery finish but I suspect it would be very vulnerable to pulls so be careful where you put it when you're not wearing it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the busy professional, 26 Feb. 2017
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I was looking forward to testing the Neato Botvac as my friends have a Roomba to which I could compare it.
Before buying one of these think where you can put it as you need an unimpeded space against a wall for the docking station, if you don't have that then it may not be for you.
Our ground floor is all wood and the Botvac is perfect for that although it also performed well on the carpet upstairs but more of that later.
You program your Botvac from the app and we have never touched the buttons. When you're away from the house it will tell you when the cycle has finished or if its got stuck, not that you could do much about it!
When you first use the Botvac it does seem to bump into a lot of furniture but its very clever and after a week it has learned its way around quite well. It has never fallen down the stairs either.
The Botvac is not a quiet machine, in fact it was louder than our regular machine but of course that's not an issue if you program it to clean when you're out.
One of the things I noticed with our friends' Roomba was that if you dropped crumbs in its path it ignored them, the Botvac passed that test with flying colours. The Roomba also sometimes forgets its way back to the docking station and so far the Botvac hasn't done that either.
The Botvac can't get into small spaces and corners so it will never be a replacement for a conventional vacuum and it also leaves tracks on the black tiled floor in the kitchen.
It can struggle with more stubborn fluff like your socks leave on carpet but otherwise it does a very goos job. I was concerned that it wouldn't produce enough suction but you can see where its been. It does need emptying every time its used on the carpeted area which is two regular bedrooms and a small landing so it might not be suitable for a large carpeted area. Also when emptying I found that the aperture is wider than a standard flip top bin so care was needed or just empty it straight into the dustbin.
In summary its a good solution for the busy professional who is hard at work all day and struggles to find the time for day to day cleaning.
