Why am I here?

1) That's a philosophical/theological/evolutionary question

2) There's some kind of 50th anniversary Beatles thing
- 2A) I ain't tryin to hear that
- 2B) They can be topped

3) Inspired by Oksana Baiul 1994 Gold
- 3A) The USA/GBR/Canadian Axis shortchanged her
- 3B) Balance the stereotype that British peoples don't like other countries and Americans don't know about other countries

4) A good song

Soap Operas. You may know people who record a week's shows and watch them all at once. You can count on de rigueur... patriarch in a home office with crystal tumblers of Scotch, looking out the window into the middle distance as he hears the news... the maid who provides too much exposition, close up of a face before commercial, plot turns worthy of tabloid headlines - "Dingos stole my baby!"

Soapdish condenses a year's worth of plots in 90 manic minutes. Actors playing actors playing soap opera actors but with more overacting like they're in a play. The extra layers make it hard to wrap your head around what the hell is going on, plus all this drama, women being catty, so I just gloss over or have a quick thought, "Well, there's two sides to every story."

Starring Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr, Carrie Fisher, that actor from that thing....

Sally Field is something else. You're not thinking "That's Sally Field." You're thinking "That's Celeste Talbert playing Maggie on-screen and off," the one true star:

"Give me a little credit, will you, credit for being someone who tried... to love you the only way she knew how?"

"I know that speech."

"You do?"

"Yeah, it was the, uh, the Thanksgiving show, when Maggie meets Bolt's blind nephew."

It's called "soap." Here's what you do. You take off the wrapper, add water and rub the soap between your hands. This will create "lather." You rub the soap on yourself thoroughly until you're clean. Now this is very important - wash the soap off with water. Dial green soap is fine soap. You should use it. And you should call up your parents or relatives right now and say, "How did you raise me? Why didn't you teach me about soap?"

She doesn't say who the number one is. If I was starting a franchise, could choose any player from any era, I would have to bypass Tom Brady and go with Joe Montana. She also leaves the perspective ambiguous. Is her point of view that of a recruiter or coach? Or, a linebacker? Perhaps the latter. "I'll be there to greet you" sounds like psych out talk - like she's going to meet the QB in the backfield and put him on his back. Like a dawg, like an NFL thug who you can't hope to stop, you can only hope to contain. If someone says the laser-like focus is on Brady that is their prerogative.

The Selling of the President
The Selling of the President

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece Theater, 14 Jan. 2014
Selling of the President is about spinning "The New Nixon." The sales pitch is done with Roger Ailes, TV producer and Fox News president. TV ads are shot with endless takes while Nixon stands before an audience of the silent majority and answers planted questions. When Nixon flubs a line or has the wrong "look" or cadence Ailes yells cut and they do it again. Nixon and his posse had learned from the 1960 contest. Look good and know the script made for popular consumption. Keep in mind Joe McGinniss was a friend of the Kennedys... and JFK/RFKs father was a Hollywood producer/studio owner. The book is actual while the truth is relative.

The message of this song? It's art, open to interpretation. I just move my head up and down and say uh huh uh huh. She has a wonderful voice. She's found her voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Karen Black Show, 2 Jan. 2014
Karen Black creates some kind of Pavlovian response. As soon as I see her my heart rate increases and I get goose bumps. "You must have seen her before... maybe in some past life experience," you're thinking. Oh no, I would remember her.

Three taut plays, each with a mind-tingling climax and denouement, she is four-five-six characters - the way she turns, voice, body language, unfurls her hair. She vacillates between puritanical roots (of a nation founded by people with buckles on their hats) and savage that has never been wholly buried.

So this is what students smuggle into the party.

Great art creates tension. The tension is... can you listen to this nuanced music without the dam bursting on your Tourette syndrome, storming the stereo, and playing some ZZ Top anti-intellectual "common sense" simply for the weight.

Be patient.

People who graduate from elite schools are pretty smart. If you need to listen to one or the other - if your life or a new constitution for a third world country depended on it - you can't go wrong with smart folks... what they graciously share.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis Presley, 21 Dec. 2013

It is my honor to recommend Elvis Presley for your song collection.

Elvis brings to his work vigor, enthusiasm, and commitment. This is to be expected in such a successful member of a leading-edge movement, and Elvis excels. Be it in his understanding intricate musical algorithms, his command of hierarchy, or the establishment of best practices with a nascent genre, Elvis consistently delivers top-notch. This speaks to his overall intellect and ability to adapt rhythms with flavor... that you savor... he don't never waver.. and he gots more spice than a Nilla Wafer - here we go - Pump It Up! Pump It Up! Wave Your Hands In The Air!

I encourage you to look favorably upon his music.

Express Yourself [Explicit]
Express Yourself [Explicit]

5.0 out of 5 stars NWA, 18 Dec. 2013
The liberal media always find expression more offensive when the narrator is the perpetrator. Of course NWA have the right to express themselves. The question is how well do they express. For those who want knowledge, NWA is arguably CNN of the streets. For young people, NWA is a commercial for dressing halfass and buying those abhorrent video games they like so damn much. The expression is better than Tarantino nightmares of depravity and Schwarzenegger's monosyllabic movies.
