5.0 out of 5 stars A revelatory performances!, 15 Oct. 2012

Maazel is not a Sibelius specialist, but for that very reason, he is not afraid of taking more freedom in adopting unusual tempi and extreme contrasts. Some might say this is not Sibelius but R.Staruss, but why not? His interpretation is a revelation for me; the intensity of expression, the powerful contrast between the dark and the light, and the deep elegiac undercurrent, masterfully captured by VPO. There's a sense of refreshing spontaneity too in these performances, which is missing in some of more orthodox yet rigid interpretations by those conductors who are obsessed with the composers' markings (symptomatic especially in Britten). It is good that a conductor like Maazel explores other possibilities to present Sibelius' symphonies just like conductors do with Mahler's music.

Super-light & stylish. Functional & clever design. The knife is much sharper than Swiss multi-tool knife. I'm not sure about durability - the scissors are very wobbly.

5.0 out of 5 stars 70s Revived, 11 Oct. 2012

This review is from: Gilbertville (Audio CD)
When I listened to this album, I was immediately captivated by the quality and the originality of the songs. I remember the first time when I put a needle on LPs like 'Himself' or 'Back to Front' and was struck by the fresh lyricism of each song. I got that same impression when I listened to this CD. It seems Gilbert O'Sullivan's well of inspiration never goes dry, as if he had set apart all these songs between 60s and 70s, and released them now in this album. He is a phenomenal song writer, he just keeps producing good albums while other artists from 60/70s are virtually dried out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A promising talent, 27 Sept. 2012

This is a wonderfully inspired recital by the 16 years old, showcasing surprisingly mature artistry and exquisite playing of Chopin, Scarlatti, Albeniz plus brilliant renditions of interesting virtuoso pieces by Kapustin, Cziffra and more. What impressed me most is the rich musicality of his playing - the rare ability to breathe a new life into whatever pieces he plays. A promising talent, no doubt, who has potential to become a great pianist of this century.

I bought this to mend my Goretex jacket I accidentally ripped open with crampon. The hole was about 2cm long, but this glue sealed it completely. I applied it from the inside of the fabric too to make it stronger than before. I wore the jacket several times on rainy days, no sign of water seeping through the mended part.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Summer Alpine Trekking, 24 Sept. 2012
I used this Gore-tex jacket for two weeks' hut-to-hut trekking in Eastern Tirol in August and September, culminating in climbing Grossglockner, during which heavy rain, hail, snow and sudden change of tempreture had tested it. Light rain would just roll off the fabric surface, sustained heavy rain soaked the first layer but kept the inside completely dry. With a fleece underneath, it kept me very warm even under subzero tempreture, including my head covered in the well-shaped large hood which accommodated the helmet nicely. Not as breathable as Polartek NeoShell, but good enough to cope with typical Alpine weather swinging between warm and cold.

The only problem I had was the durability. The thin fabric had no chance against rough rock surface during the climb, when I came down I found the fabric around the side pocket slightly tattered. So, I would recommend more strechable and durable (lighter and more breathable too) Polartek NeoShell jackets for Alpine climbing, but Berghaus Cornice jacket is excellent for trekking and hiking in testing environments.

The actual colour of the jacket is nice greyish green, not the brownish olive colour as displayed on this page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable Performances of Debussy's Piano Works, 25 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good quality live recordings from the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory. Some of them were released before on CD(M&A and some Japanese labels) but now reissued on one disc. Richter is peerless when it comes to playing Debussy's works. He captures not only the tonal beauty of the music but the essence of it, so elusive to most of pianists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully evocative 'Antarctica', 20 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this CD for Sculthorpe's music, but the guitar concerto 'Antarctica' composed by Westlake turned out to be more impressive. The style of composition is similar to Malcolm Arnold's guitar concerto, but the stunningly evocative musical landscape Westlake creates reminds me of Yoshimatsu's guitar concerto 'Pegasus Effect'. The harp is very effectively used in intricate duo with the guitar, depicting mysterious icy world against the orchestral backdrop of brutal nature. John Williams' solid style of playing really goes well with this sort of music, not to mention the wide range of tonal colours he produces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Precious Document of Richter's Incomparable Pianism, 2 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This 1980 Moscow live recording of Janacek's piano concerto is probably radio broadcast recording, judging from the poor sound quality (not unbearably bad like other Doremi releases from various broadcast recordings, you can still hear detail despite the cacophonous acoustics). It's a precious document of the uncompromising pianism of Richter's late years.

What makes this CD really worth adding to your collection is the superb live performances of Hindemith's chamber works, much better recorded in 1985, Budapest and in 1978 & 85, Moscow. Richter's playing is exquisite in Sonata no.4 for viola and piano. Trumpet sonata and Bassoon sonata display Richter's supreme musicianship in chamber music making and offer an interesting contrast to Glenn Gould's recordings of Hindemith's chamber works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Otherworldly Performances, 27 July 2012

Some people criticise Fischer-Dieskau for being overemotional, but these performances of Mahler Lieder display his incomparable ability to communicate the essence of the music in such an intimate way and that his singing goes beyond the realm of emotional expression, to touch the other-worldly.
