3.0 out of 5 stars A good read if you like M E Braddon, 10 Feb. 2014

I've become slightly addicted to M E Braddon. This isn't one of her best, but it still kept me hooked throughout a week of commuting. This one is partly set in bohemian Paris which adds some welcome local colour. This novel is slightly unusual in that the heroine gets married quite early on but is then 'tempted' by someone she formerly had a crush on. Quite a risque plotline for a Victorian novel I think... I found the ending rather sad but won't say more than this as one of the pleasures of this author is trying to guess how the plot twists will work out. One downside of this Kindle edition is the many typos, in particular 'Lovel' keeps getting turned into 'Level' - but then again it is free, so can't complain too much.

3.0 out of 5 stars A ripping yarn, 17 Oct. 2013

This is a great Victorian melodrama with fiendish plotters, several murders, long-lost relatives, beautiful gamblers, buried treasure... The noble heroine rises above her murky beginnings to make a brilliant marriage, but falls victim to a ruthless schemer - and her past is catching up with her. Can she survive to defeat the villains, and will the truth about her past ever be known? Read on and find out! It's a good old-fashioned page-turner, somewhat reliant on coincidence and many of the characters are mere stereotypes - but with all the suspense and intrigue it's very hard to put down, I find...

Bought this as a gift for my other half who is a big Feynman fan, then ended up grabbing it to read myself. It really gets across Feynman's larger-than-life personality and charisma, and takes an empathic look at the tragic aspects of his life as well. I love the way the images and text work together. While I mostly read conventional fiction (ie just words) I'm starting to appreciate - through books like this - the power of characterful drawings to convey moods or feelings without words. Very impressive. My OH's favourite scene is the one where Feynman's friends help him finish a piece of work by literally locking him in a room and passing food under the door until it's done. We could all do with friends like those at times...

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Peasy, 7 Jun. 2013

Purchased this to use during a kitchen revamp while the normal cooker was unavailable. So far (used about 10 times) it has been brilliant - we've made one-pot dishes such as soups/stews and also fried eggs in it. It's very easy to clean afterwards too. Just one thing to watch: the stew-type dishes seem to evaporate and 'stick' more quickly than with a normal pan - maybe because of the large surface area - so make sure to include plenty of liquid, especially if you won't be standing over it stirring. Otherwise it's great.

Kem doesn't seem to be known much in the UK - I came across him when listening to a US internet radio show. He is an R&B/jazz vocalist from Detroit, with a wonderful voice, and the songs on this album are arranged beautifully. Although a lot of the tracks are religious (apart from a couple of Christmas classics and a gorgeous love duet), which won't perhaps suit everyone, I didn't think that got in the way at all. It is romantic, spiritual and uplifting, and I wish we could hear more of this kind of thing at Christmas rather than the usual tired old compilations.

Tried this on spec because other reviewers recommended it (and it was free). I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. M E Braddon is a witty author who makes Austen-ish ironic asides about her characters' foibles, especially their illusions about love, while allowing you to sympathise with their plight. The plot was suspenseful enough to keep me turning the pages and the ending took me by surprise - yes, the story has parallels with 'Emma Bovary', but the conclusion is very different! I liked it so much that I'm now reading her more well-known novel 'Lady Audley's Secret' which is also a great yarn.
