If you ar elokking for a book with pictures of Rembrandt's paintings and a short description of what they are buy another book, but if you are in the mood for Rembrandt in his time, learn more about the political changes in the low lands in Rembrandt's time this is it...
Read about the artists that influenced Rembrandt (Pieter Paul Rubens being one) and how Rembrandt becane the toast of the town.

So if you are interested in art, and history, this is your book, this is your writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Break out the hot chocolate and watch..., 8 April 2012

Kenneth Branagh made a lovely movie to watch on a bleak midwinter's evening, when it is cold outside, snuggle up on the sofa with a hot chocolate annd let this movie lift your spirits.

It is a black and white movie to start out.
The movie centers around a group of people preparing the 'ultimate Christmas play' Hamlet.
I liked how the characters who start out as stereotypes claim their own place in the movie universe.
It is an insight into the troubles of rehearsing and preparing for the opening night, the differences between people, their ambitions, their struggles with themselves and others.

This review is from: Art: The Whole Story (Paperback)
If ever you want a book you can pick up and browse through on a lazy sonday morning, or use it to find a art movement this is your book.
Not a backpacking, take to the museum with you kind of book, but a reference book that has not only Western art but also art from the Middle-East, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
Each art movement is introduced by examples, artworks have focal point photos, the parts of the artwork that have special interest.
And the important artists of the art movement have a short profile.

A welcome addition to my reference books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant read, 10 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book is build up according to the seven ages of life, infant, schoolboy, lover, soldier, justice, panttaloon and oblivion.
It is not so much a biography of the author/actor Shakespeare but more a cutural outline of life as a commoner in Elizabethan/Jacobean England.
It takes a lot off liberties in the area of what happened in his life, but if you are not bothered by assumptions you get a nice insight..
