5.0 out of 5 stars An engrossing read, 2 Dec. 2013

Having been fascinated by the story of Borley Rectory for more than 30 years, I was interested to see how this story would be told - I was preparing to be disappointed. However what I found was a tale of truly believable characters and circumstances. I quickly became completely enthralled and had great difficulty putting it down to attend to life's more mundane matters!
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story with characters you feel you get to know and care about and with a very spooky background to it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy from end to end!, 6 Sept. 2013

Laughed so much reading this! George and Ben are mates who decide to travel from Land's End to John O Groats by bicycle, except they don't have bikes.... or clothes.... or anything else..... This is one of the best books I have read this year - funny and heart-warming - and it goes to show that the majority of people that you come across here in the UK are actually very nice! The scenery is also rather good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent laugh out loud stuff, 30 Dec. 2012

This is a must-read if you've ever wondered (or even if you haven't) what life can sometimes be like as a serving officer of the best police force in the world. You will cry with laughter, if you don't then I think there's probably something a bit wrong with you! I'm an insomniac and anyone who can make me have to stifle my laughter for fear of waking the kids at 3.30am has done a cracking job. There is only one thing wrong with this book - it ends!
"Excuse me, Madam, did you know you could have foam around your box?" Still giggling over that and many others. Read this book, then it'll all make sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book full of love, 13 Mar. 2012
This is an account of a journey told from the heart. The Princess Matilda is a beautiful flat-bottomed barge that the Spalls made there home and on which they traveled around the Uk. Shane's stories of the people and places they encounter are honest and often very funny. Her descriptions of the conditions they sometimes faced at sea and whilst trying to climb on and off the Princess Matilda are pretty hair-raising! You can also sense very much the respect and admiration they have for the people who work at sea and particularly the brave crews of the RNLI.

It's also partly about another journey (and the reason why they have a boat), the one Tim and Shane made to hell and back when Timothy was diagnosed and became gravely ill with leukaemia. Although we don't get to hear about the illness in great detail,(nor do we need to)there is enough to know what that it was a time of deepest worry and anguish for them. But the overwhelming thing that shines through that distressing time so very brightly is the love and strength they have for each other.

A wonderful book, uplifting, moving and funny. Very, very hard to put down! The Voyages of the Princess Matilda
