1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor - stay away!, 6 Jan. 2015
It plays at the wrong speed, wears grooves due to lack of counter weighting and their support is unresponsive once the problem gets beyond something they can just cut and paste from their own website.

[edit] I returned to retailer and got a replacement. It had the same problem. I suspect it is a general product issue and they all have it. The problem is that many people will not be aware of it unless they are listening for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue Note 75 Vinyl, 4 Dec. 2014
This review is from: The Sidewinder [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Until now I've only ever heard this on mp3. I just picked up the Blue Note 75th Anniversary 180g vinyl. Listening to this through quality headphones is a revelation. The drumming in particular is stunning and the whole thing is so much brighter and punchier. Interestingly it comes with a code to download the 320kbps mp3 version, which I duly did. I was surprised that they were somewhat "dead", even compared to my previously acquired 256kbps mp3s. My turntable comes with software to create mp3s from the vinyl. Having done this also, the results are much better than the new download, but doesn't compare to listening to vinyl directly. It goes without saying that the music is magnificent; this is exactly how I want jazz to be. Overall, a very worthwhile purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive return, 12 April 2013

Given the way these "comebacks" are received, this will almost certainly sweep the Grammys next year. That's not necessarily a good thing in itself, but he thoroughly deserves some recognition for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the critics, 23 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Riot City Blues (Audio CD)
Critics like to bash this because they like to use a band's past glories as a stick to beat them with. Nobody said they had to make Screamadelica 2. The fact is, if the Stones had made this, the music press would have bowed down at the alter of Mick'n'Keef and rightly so. It's far superior to A Bigger Bang for one thing. Bobbie is classicist and a Stones junkie, and we are all the better for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still waiting for "the great Bond movie", 21 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Skyfall [DVD] (DVD)
For some time I've been a fan of the original Ian Fleming books. He isn't the greatest writer, but Bond is much more interesting on the page than he is on the screen. The great Bond movie moments owe much to Fleming's style and panache. The truly bad Bond movies (e.g. all the Brosnans, the nadir being Die Another Day) are merely parodies of the earlier movies.
So now we have the third Daniel Craig movie. I think this falls somewhere in the middle of the movies. It's not awful, it's not great, it's too long, the script is average, the plot largely irrelevant. That said, Craig carries the film reasonably well. His damaged Bond holds up for the most part. Judi Dench has unfortuanely been a liability for some time. She really should have gone with Brosnan. The idea that there is a some kind of feeling between M and Bond, beyond a simple grudging mutual admiration, doesn't work for me. And Bond needs a memorable villain (Blofeld, Mr Big, Le Chiffre) and this one is forgettable. The end of the Cold War hasn't done much for Bond. I think it would have been a good idea to make a retro Bond, but I guess each generation needs to identify with the character.
Somehow I feel that "the great Bond movie" has yet to be made. Of course, there are no more Fleming books. It's no coincidence that Casino Royale, although over done in the last hour, worked as well as it did. What I believe to be the best Bond, From Russia with Love, sticks closest to the book (also probably the best) of any movie in the series.

If the latter-day Stones had put out something this good there would be gushing praise and 5-star reviews in Rolling Stone and Q.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why such great reviews?, 4 Feb. 2012
These are just about ok if you exclusively listen to rock. They are VERY bass heavy, but not in a particularly good way. There is almost no definition or clarity, just a muffled, dull thud. Anything at the treble end is almost drowned out. Try listening to anything with a subtler, shaded sounded (I was just listening to Melody Gardot) and it's pretty much a disaster. I've switched to the stock pair that came with my Sansa Fuze and they are much, much better. On the plus side, they fit my ears acceptably, which is where the 2 stars come from.
