5.0 out of 5 stars A Lively and Fascinating Biography of one of America's Greatest Artists, 23 Jan. 2016

Krin Gabbard's biography of Charles Mingus does a great service in elevating the status of Mingus as a great 20th century American composer and placing his music and his writings in the context of contemporary culture. Written in a highly accessible and entertaining way, the book is filled with fascinating stories of Mingus and all the people he worked with over the years. The life story of Mingus is a truly unique one, and his personality was filled with fascinating contradictions, which Gabbard does a great job of making sense of. Gabbard has also done interesting research into the origins of Mingus's autobiography, "Beneath the Underdog", and even uncovered some of his poetry. His discussion of the music is detailed and makes you want to run and listen to all of the music immediately. I highly recommend reading this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition is flawed, 22 Jan. 2013

This is a wonderful novel, but unfortunately the Kindle edition is littered with misprints and typos. The publisher obviously did not spend the time to correct the mistakes from the scanned text. It is a shame that a publisher can allow such sloppiness to occur; it certainly does detract from the reading experience. Five stars for the book, one star for the edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly formatted for Kindle!, 17 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While it is nice to have this to read in Kindle format (reading on my Ipad), the presentation is ruined by having the poem line numbers (every 5) in the same size type and in the same line as the poem itself.
Thus a line of the poem appears on the page exactly like this : 15 in the stillness of his revolutions
It makes it impossible to enjoy reading the poem when every five lines a number appears as part of the line.. Fix this, Amazon!
