Somewhat more far fetched than Prophecy, the historical background is generally excellent however the real Giordano Bruno was probably a more interesting and enigmatic character.

Follows on well from the first one, very believable characters and situations within the context of the period. Sometimes bit too predictable in terms of outcomes.

Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up to Wolf Hall, 16 Jun. 2013

The evocation of the Tudor period is wonderful;the detailed research must take months.I am hooked on this version of the life of Thomas Cromwell which is much more interesting than the more academic biographies.I'm now waiting for the next installment to carry on from 1537. Hurry up Hilary!

Heartstone (Matthew Shardlake 5)
Heartstone (Matthew Shardlake 5)
by C. J. Sansom
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant., 3 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sansom's mastery of this genre is almost complete. The continuing complex drama of the Tudor lawyer's life and work is as riveting as ever, although some may find this episode over-long,the realistic treatment of military life and the fate of the Mary Rose are well worth the required stamina. The central theme is very relevent to modern preoccupation with androgeny. An all round winner for me!

This album has the warmest sound of anything I've heard for years;Yolande and the guys have managed to produce a perfect mix of country, soul and gospel which is almost unique. If you have a listen to their new single Gravy Train I'm sure you'll want the whole set. Beautiful and highly recommended!

Aspects of English Protestantism C. 1530-1700 (Politics, Culture and Society in Early Modern Britain)

4.0 out of 5 stars Well researched and opinionated!, 22 Aug. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nicholas Tyacke is a brilliant writer/researcher whose books are world reknowned in his field. The in-depth work in this book is up to his usual standard and the narrative style is reasonably fluent. When I said opinionated I mean that some historians do not agree with Tyacke's point of view, especially the old church party/constituancy.Nevertheless if you want a brilliant in-depth study of the English reformation and its aftermath you will not be disappointed.

If you like sort-of folk-rock stuff with good playing and nice words you'll like this;not earth shattering but very good, competent English music...nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 20 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wolf Hall (Paperback)
The most accomplished and well researched historical novel I've read for many years,Hilary Mantel has created a wonderful evocation of the Tudor period and because most of the characters are people we know a little about from historical studies we can imagine these people acting in these ways in these situations. Most of the background situations involve relatively well known events and real people who were major actors in the pages of well respected histories of Henry VIII from people as diverse as Starkey,Elton and Alison Wier. This is a truly fascinating,page-turner which ranks with both the best novels and the best histories,it reminds me of the best of Michael Wood,Simon Schama or Starkey,as well as Le Carre or Graham Greene or Phillip Pullman.
OUTSTANDING....buy it or borrow it but read it anyway!

The Acts and Monuments of the Church Containing the History and Sufferings of the Martyrs Part Two
The Acts and Monuments of the Church Containing the History and Sufferings of the Martyrs Part Two
by John Foxe
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.97

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed reproduction of Great Work, 29 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is currently the only way of acquiring the text(in part)of John Foxe's definitive partial history of the middle age and early modern English church and people of faith(and their persecutors). The text itself is fairly readable and quite accurately reproduced from the edition copied here but there are omissions and modifications of language which make somewhat untrue to the original books. The major problem however is the quality of the book, printed on cheap paper and not including the wonderful illustrations it represents poor value for money, even at the discount price I paid. The companion volume, containing the earlier books of Foxe's masterpiece,is even worse value as its inexplicably more expensive.Come on people, anybody studying the English Reformation or 16th/17th century church history really needs these books and well above £50 for the two is out of most students' budgets.
