5.0 out of 5 stars Amongst The Best, 10 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony No.1 (Audio CD)
I have quite a few versions of Mahler's First Symphony ( as do most Mahler afficianado's , I guess ) , but this one is right at the top of the pile , in my opinion , along with Kubelik/Bayern Rundfunks , and ahead of most others.
The sound is still good in absolute terms , and the performance is terrific . Lively and vibrant when needed , and refined and subtle also .
Solti has somewhat of a reputation as being a bit unsubtle at times ( totally unjustified from my point of view ), but this performance has everything . Certainly better than Bernstein's critically acclaimed efforts .
It certainly deserves the legends tag it is labeled with here .

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Effort, 10 Nov. 2012
Despite some criticism from the other reviews , I am totally in support of what I believe is a very good version of this Ninth Symphony.
It can be termed a "sleeper " , in that it grows on you , and after subsequent plays , you pick up on the little nuances that may have not been obvious at first .
It isn't a barnstomer like Solti/CSO , and may not be as initially impressive in the first movement like the Kubelik/BSO live version on Audite , but it is very consistent throughout , and as a whole , is very well integrated .
Another point ; I do not believe it is ethically correct for someone to write a review on a performance , that by his own admission , he hasn't listened to .

5.0 out of 5 stars Agree with John Kwok, 10 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I must refer people to John Kwok's review for a good summation.
I , for one , am very pleased with this performance , and having bought the First and Second symphonies in this series also , I must say that they are equally good .
I am now considering whether to get the Third Symphony by this combination .
I don't really need another , but if it is as good as the others , then I probably will have to !

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly, 10 Nov. 2012

I concur with A Customers sentiments . There is something lacking in the final mix , call it "emotion" if you will .
It is very nearly right up there , but in comparison with Kubelik/BSO - both studio and live , Solti/CSO , particularly , and others by Haitink/CSO , Abbado/BPO , it just falls short .
It reminds me of Ivan Fischer/Budapest Festival Orchestra ( his Fourth Symphony is outstanding , however ). Accuracy , and a good sound , don't quite make up for the intangible "feel" that a top-notch Mahler performance should have .

5.0 out of 5 stars It Pleases Me, 10 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (Audio CD)
This version of Mahler's First Symphony has had variable reviews and write-ups in various publications and websites , since it's release .
In my opinion however, it stands up there with the best .
While my own particular favourites are Solti / LSO , and Kubelik / BSO , I feel that this is as good as any others .
The sound , particularly in SACD mode , is terrific , and adds to what is a very good performance in my opinion.
The CSO Resound label is to be commended on producing a fine product , and having also listened to the Second and Sixth symphonies by Haitink / CSO also , I can highly recommend them as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 10 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mahler: Symphony No. 3 (Audio CD)
Ideally , and particularly with Mahler , one requires a very good sound to work alongside and supplement / complement a very good performance , to get the most out of his works.
This is one of them . There have been very good performances of Mahler's Third Symphony over the years , as one would expect , as every orchestra under the sun , virtually , as had a go at most of them .
In my opinion , this is one of the very best , with both a very good performance and excellent ( particularly in SACD mode ) sound .
A 9/10 overall , I feel , and right up there along with Abbado / VPO ( Jessye Norman ) , and Chailly / Concertgebouw .

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed, 27 Oct. 2012
I find this series of concertos somewhat mixed in quality . The later two ( four and five ) are , to my ears at least , somewhat better performances than the earlier ones .
I am unsure why , but Ashkenazy's forte , as one would expect , are with the Russian works . His Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky are uniformly excellent , but he doesn't quite seem as adept at Beethoven , lacking some "feel".
While not bad , and Solti / CSO are excellent support , there is just something lacking .
For a truly outstanding cycle , get the Kovacevich / Colin Davis efforts , now available in a multitude of combinations .
They are truly exceptional .

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good indeed, 24 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have spent much time listening to Bruckners complete range of symphonies by Eugen Jochum / Staatskapelle Dresden , and find the performances outstanding . However , in my opinion , this version of Symphony No 4 by VPO / Bruckner is the best I have heard .
There is that intangible "rightness" about the performance that really hits the mark .
One of my most listened to discs , never tire of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Genius, 13 Sept. 2012

This review is from: Live! In Europe (Audio CD)
I may be preaching to the converted ,but the man was an absolute genius as this disc ( plus the majority of his others , plus the Taste ones ) shows.
The version of Messin' With The Kid is magnificent , and unsurpassed .
In my opinion the only two blues / rock tracks that equal this are ;

Jimi Hendrix - Driving South ( BBC Sessions )

Fleetwood Mac - Jumping At Shadows 2 ( Live In Boston 1970 ).

His dexterity on both electric and acoustic is terrific , with exquisite taste , great tonality and nothing overplayed .
Oh , I almost forgot to mention that he is very likely to have been the best slide player ever.
Terrific songs , earthy vocals , and unsurpassed touch , make this ( all ! ) his albums absolutely essential .

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 19 Aug. 2012
This review is from: David Live (Audio CD)
A token live rubbish album from the pale Mr Puniverse .Absolutely terrible. I first heard it on the radio when first released all those years ago and thought it was terrible. Having heard it again recently , I must say it is still junk .
