I had been learning Spanish for a few months before buying this and was learning by the conventional approach, which in a similar way to French and German at school, completely failed at making me motivated or able to speak the language.

Paul Noble's method was thus very refreshing, and in under two weeks I superseded what I had learnt before in several months. Paul Noble starts with a small selection of nouns and verbs and you soon become fluent with the selection, which gives you the confidence to form sentences with what you know. You begin to realise how a sentence is formulated, and you do it yourself. You realise that the form is far more important than the content, the sound application of the former making the latter simply a question of picking up new words and applying them correctly. Because it is all listening (to Spanish and Latin American natives) and speaking, you quickly appreciate the cadences, pronunciation, and stress of the words and phrases.

However, I found the course pedestrian and slow at times. The scope of topics could also be improved: I understand the focus on tourism but it makes for rather shallow conversation. Yes, learning lots of new words comes second to correct sentence form but I think there could have been more nouns and verbs introduced. In CD 11, the last CD before the review CD, we are still using the same sentences from the first few CDs, like 'I have reserved a table'. Indeed, Paul uses the past tense form of 'I have reserved' a lot but only a few minutes is spent on the other past form of 'I reserved' despite this tense being of equal significance. Similarly, the future tense is dealt with sparsely, and no mention was made of the present tense and future tense 'we' version of the verb being exactly the same, something I picked up on. Maybe this would be understandable if there was a follow up course, but as yet, it doesn't look like there is.

Despite these limitations, this gives you a good start in terms of speaking Spanish. The underlying philosophy is that to speak a language, you have to speak it, an obvious truth that is missed out by the type of study taught in schools that neglect the fact that languages are a practical subject and more closely resemble studies in linguistics. This course gives you a small, but sound base on which to add more words.

I had to get a new hard drive after my old hard drive failed. This was the new hard drive. Six months later, this failed. I've been informed that it is a mechanical failure of the drive itself, which is a costly recovery should I choose to recover the data. The price is good, but it's not worth the possibility of it failing in the long run in my opinion.

Steven Spielberg: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies)
Steven Spielberg: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies)
by Kathi Jackson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £26.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative but needs more commentary, 27 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is very informative, containing a plethora of dates, trivia and information about the man and the legend that is Steven Spielberg. However, a more complex analysis of his film themes and his personality is not really undertaken. There are the obvious things, like the featuring of the 'Everyman' character, the average, disaffected surburban dweller. Similarly the introduction of the book describes Spielberg as an imaginative but anxious child but there is not much more comment on his personality.

That said, maybe a more simple (I found after I bought it, that it was intended for high school students) biography might be preferred by some people who just want the lowdown on the facts and figures of Spielberg and his films. All in all, it is an enjoyable and informative read and shed a lot of light on where Spielberg came from, and where he got to where he is.

Night School: Wake up to the power of sleep
Night School: Wake up to the power of sleep

4.0 out of 5 stars Read this, and sleep and dream well, 8 July 2014
Night School is an interesting account of sleep and dreams by the popular psychology writer and professor Richard Wiseman.

The book covers: what happens when you sleep, the effects of not sleeping, the secrets of those who sleep well, techniques for avoiding night terrors, napping and learning in sleep, what dreams are, what they might mean, and how to lucid dream.

Wiseman balances anecdotes with research and modern studies, and the book is written clearly, accessible yet still describing and exploring scientific concepts. There is a good mix of explanation, and helpful advice about sleeping, napping, and dreaming. Wiseman is knowledgeable and witty, which makes for a more engaging read.

My only reservation was that Wiseman seems to cover too much ground. For example, when discussing what sleep is and how to get better sleep, Wiseman sometimes repeats the same point or states the obvious instead of revealing more detail about the mechanisms or indeed even more tips about how to sleep better.

Notwithstanding this, I would recommend the book to anybody having issues with sleep since it does give some important and great advice, as well to anybody fascinated by the phenomena that (should) occupy one third of our lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy little book, 6 July 2014
This book covers everything from pre-production, to production, post-production and even distribution and marketing. The book is based around interviews from those in the industry, so you get a specialist's view on each aspect of filmmaking which was helpful. At the end of the book are interviews from filmmakers who have made successful films with very low budgets, including Oren Keli of Paranormal Activity. These were especially insightful, not to mention inspiring.

A small gripe I had was the lack of technical advice concerning lighting and camera: there was one section on cameras, but it was quite short. Aside from this, the book is very handy, full of great tips and worth getting if you are thinking of making a film with little money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely comprehensive and detailed, a 'Bible' of cinematography, 5 July 2014
Cinematography is a rare mix of art and science, and concerns the craft of designing each shot. While the director of a film will suggest what the shot looks like, the cinematographer has many creative tools in his arsenal to design each shot.

This book covers such tools. Many areas are included, from lighting to lenses to aspect ratios, to name a few, and although the discussion can at times get dense and technical, Blain Brown explains everything very well and all the concepts are backed up with pictures or diagrams. The scope of the book is impressive; it contains everything to do with cinematography. I read it cover to cover, but it would function just as well as a reference book.

The Charisma Myth: Master the Art of Personal Magnetism
The Charisma Myth: Master the Art of Personal Magnetism

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to charisma, 20 Jun. 2014
Olivia Fox Cabane is an expert in leadership and charisma. In this book she gives an explanation of what charisma is, and also tools for improving it. The title refers to the mistaken assumption held by some that charisma is innate. The author rejects this early on the book, stating that charisma is instead learned behaviours, or habits. The book also discusses different styles of charisma: visionary, kindness, authority and focus.

But where the book really excels is in its offering of many powerful tools to improve your mental state and conversational skills, among other things. Tools for dealing with negative mental states are provided since body language is the most important component of charisma and there is a direct causal relationship between mental state and body language. These exercises are superb and their applications go far beyond just being more charismatic. I bought this book just to understand charisma and to polish my social skills a bit more. This book offered a lot more. The writing style was lucid and concise, and the ideas well explained and researched.

Making Short Films, Third Edition: The Complete Guide from Script to Screen
Making Short Films, Third Edition: The Complete Guide from Script to Screen

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative, 16 Jun. 2014
This is a fairly chunky book which, as it promises, gives you the lowdown on making a short film.

The authors look at various roles in part I, writer, director producer, before looking at pre-production, production, and post-production in parts II-IV. Following this in part V are interviews with filmmakers and in part VI are six short films, accompanied by interviews with those involved in the film and scripts. Part VII takes a look at editing, scriptwriting and scheduling/budget software while Part VIII is about careers, the merit of film school and a history of short films. Part IX and X are great resources as diverse as forms (e.g. for permissions) when you are filmmaking, all the way to top 10 filmmaking blogs.

Because the book looks at who does what in a film, as well as advice from those people in the plethora of interviews provided, it gives you a good idea of what making a short film is like. Of course, it doesn't pretend that a book is a substitute for going out there and doing it but it can prevent some common pitfalls and make you more knowledgeable when you do make a film. The resources are there in the book to take the next step, with valuable advice regarding marketing the film. Although the book is specific to short films, and always keeps its content relevant to this, the vast majority of the advice can be applied to any length of film. If you want more information about making short films, this is a book you should get.
