5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding author and book, Thoughtless publishing., 15 July 2014

This book sets the standard for any serious student of The Sermon on the Mount and the name of the author alone is a greater recommendation than any review that I might write. If you are seriously committed to the study of this subject, there is not a more comprehensive exegesis available. If you pass this over because it looks too complicated, you are not a serious student of the scriptures.
However, I have less favourable comments regarding this recent edition of the book. I have the IVP edition and I had hoped to obtain a copy of the same edition for a friend.. In that I was unsuccessful, but after much searching I hoped that I had found an equivalent in this Eerdmans edition. Major disappointment. There are several significant differences:

1). A larger page size initially suggested possibly a larger font size. It is actually minimally smaller. All of the extra space has been put into the margins.
2). The number of pages has been reduced from 657 to 585, with no benefit to the reader
3). The paper in the IVP version is white, Eerdmans selected cream, which significantly reduces the contrast level since the print is at the same level on the grey-scale.

Items 1 and 3 have an adverse effect to the reader who is not younger than 45 years of age.
I would be very surprised if the majority of potential readers of this book are under 45, particularly in an age where reading is rapidly going out of fashion. (There are no buttons to press. No, a Kindle is not a book).
Do I assume that the entire upper management at Eerdmans is under 45? I think not, but it is disturbing that today's Christian (?) publishers appear to be driven solely by the lust for profit.

Publishers! If you really value your customers, USE THE EXTRA SPACE TO INCREASE THE FONT SIZE! As the saying goes, it isn't rocket science!!

Bleak House - BBC (3 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [2005]
Bleak House - BBC (3 Disc Special Edition) [DVD] [2005]
Dvd ~ Gillian Anderson
Price: £7.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dickens Classic., 29 May 2014

Charles Dickens is beyond review for his sheer literary genius and his command of the English language. Bleak House will be a classic in English literature until the end of time.
Unfortunately, I am unable to review the DVD because it was sent as a gift to my sister in England, who, like me, grew-up with her head in a book, of which Bleak House was one of many. If the DVD does any credit at all to the original, it has to be worth buying by anyone who appreciates the best in the written word, whether it be fact or fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anglicised or Americanized?, 28 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My comments regarding the English Standard Version of the Bible as and its use in the church environment as well as home Bible Study are elsewhere. I purchased this particular edition quite recently, because on reading the small print at the beginning of my newly acquired first "Large Print" ESV, I discovered that there exists what is described as an "Anglicised" version. After experiencing some difficulty, It became apparent that this version is published in the UK by Collins and the various variations and bindings do not match those published by Crossway in the USA. Since my interest in the Bible is from a spiritual perspective, not its pecuniary value, I question the obviously deliberate mismatch from the point of view of the customer. Sadly, this changing philosophy on the part of publishers began some years ago, as money became the overwhelming driving force in society, ousting spiritual education and enlightenment, even on the Christian market.
I have not yet been able to devote time to uncovering the secrets between Anglicised v. Americanized, I admit that it is purely out of curiosity that I decided to satisfy my curiosity! Perhaps I will just keep my eyes on my new Crossway Large Print, which is a need, not a curiosity!
If anyone wished to obtain the Collins Anglicised version, it is available for purchase from the UK only and is not listed for on-line purchase in the USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Front-Line at Home 1939-1945., 9 Jan. 2014

This book was actually purchased as a Christmas present for my sister, who "Lives to read" and especially books from the WW11 period,(we lived in Sratford, London during that time and are not unfamiliar with UXB's) written by "People who were there" or related by such people to the author.
My sister is a harsh critic of any book from this period purporting to be factual and "Real." Her report to me is that she finds this book very hard to put down. It contains a great deal of information and personal experiences that she has not read before and although she has not finished it yet, there has not been one adverse comment. Personally speaking, I am only concerned that the level of excitement may be too much for someone in their late eighty's.

My sister is not an easy person to please, no-one gets rubbish past her, therefore on her recommendation, I have no hesitation in giving this book Five Stars.
If you think that this is just ancient history and doesn't really matter, these people lived (and many died) doing this work.
To bring a little bit of realism into it, imagine sitting at work in front of a UXB, instead of your computer and your boss telling you to de-fuse it."Sorry, they didn't send the instructions with it." One false move.........

Most Secret: The Hidden History of Orford Ness

3.0 out of 5 stars My expectations were not realised., 5 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a difficult book to review, largely because it attempts to cover two different fields of interest. The title arouses hopes of revelation of hitherto classified information regarding the work carried-out at Orford Ness. This aspect receives attention, but the reader is frequently bogged-down with records of events that were not project related in a scientific or technical sense but more concerned with political issues between government and local administrations. There are many points where we take a jump back in time. This is confusing and somewhat frustrating in a historical context and causes discontinuity in the historical development of the multiple projects involved over a long period of time. As we are brought up toward the point where the thirty-year security cut-off comes into effect,(the early seventies), there is a tendency to replace historical fact with possibilities.
The historical record would have made more inspiring reading had the administrative element been kept to the bare essentials.
I would have awarded another star to this rating had there not been numerous technical and scientific inaccuracies, which in some cases amounted to error. The impression is given that the author was working in a field in which his knowledge is limited. This leads to some fundamental mistakes in some of his statements and assumptions.
The security aspect becomes more apparent when he goes beyond the early seventies, where he clearly had no documentation to work from and it would have been better to have ended the record there, rather than engage in relating unsupportable possibilities that in some cases appear to be based upon hearsay.
The final chapters of the book did not hold my attention.

Overall, I am now informed of many things contained within the historical record of activities at Orford Ness, but I am disappointed by the weakness of some of the scientific and technical information, which could very easily have been improved with some informed assistance. For this we have to put some responsibility on the shoulders of the editing staff, which surely includes technical advisers.

For a reader who is just interested in learning about the many projects that were conducted at Orford Ness, this appears to be a very comprehensive record.
For the reader interested in the scientific and technical aspects of military hardware research and development, this book may fall short of your expectations.

The Last Rose: André Rieu - Live in Dublin [DVD]
The Last Rose: André Rieu - Live in Dublin [DVD]
Dvd ~ André Rieu
Price: £13.20

5.0 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu- Professional Entertainer., 9 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Andre Rieu is always entertaining and always gives full value for money. "The Last Rose" is no exception. He has an amazing ability to "Read" his audience and lift them into his programme. Charles Dickens was able to take his reader into his story, Andre Rieu brings his audience into his show. This DVD is probably one of the best examples of his wonderful talent. The difference between the audience reaction at the beginning and their reaction by halfway through the show is an outstanding achievement, a tribute to his contagious personality, talent and obvious dedication to his work and to his team of wonderful musicians and fellow entertainers.
However gloomy your mood when you start to watch "The Last Rose', by the end you will be laughing and enjoying with his audience the music and atmosphere that he creates. It is hard to watch this performance without replaying at least some of the tracks! If you enjoy and appreciate talented muscians sharing their love of what they do, you will love this! Worth every penny!
