The Darling Buds of May
The Darling Buds of May
Price: £3.99

5.0 out of 5 stars a great read, 24 Jun. 2014

An enjoyable and delightful story. To use Pop's word:'Perfick, I like Bates' gentle humour. I will now read the next book in the series.

Do Not Go Gentle - the dying days of Dylan Thomas
Do Not Go Gentle - the dying days of Dylan Thomas
Price: £1.02

5.0 out of 5 stars an interesting tribute, 23 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The author imagines Dylan Thomas' thoughts as he reviews his life when he lays dying in a New York hospital. I am sure that Dylan would have achieved more if he had been more disciplined and drank less. This book is an interesting tribute to a great poet.

Price: £4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, 24 May 2014

This book starts slowly with the author introducing the characters. The pace quickens and the story becomes more compelling. Through the diary, in three parts, we see a naive teenager grow into a woman. I thought the ending was sad for her.

This is the 2nd Tom Sharpe book that I have read. He is very funny though sometimes crude. I will probably not read anymore of his books.

I have used this book to lead the Christianity Explored course which provides a user-friendly
introduction to the Christian faith. The course lasts 7 weeks and is based on the
Gospel of Mark.

Five English Reformers
Five English Reformers
Price: £0.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction, 7 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent introduction to the lives, teachings and deaths of these brave and godly reformers.
Though Ryle was a 19th century writer I always find him readable. This forthright evangelical was the first bishop of
Liverpool.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be cautious with Gill!, 7 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Gill was an 18th century Hebrew and Greek scholar whose commentary covers the entire Bible.
He tells you what the verse does not mean and then what it does mean. His comments
Are sometimes spoilt by his High (hyper) Calvinism eg the world in John 3:16 is not the world of sinners
but the world of the elect. Matthew Henry is a far better, and more balanced, commentator.

Spurgeon: New Park Street Pulpit
Spurgeon: New Park Street Pulpit
Price: £2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A great preacher, 7 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I always find Spurgeon's sermons helpful. Once you get into his 19th century way of
preaching you will find good nourishing food for your soul. Spurgeon was unashamedly
evangelical and Calvinistic but not a hyper like his predecessor John Gill. He was a fervent
and successful gospel preacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scary read?, 7 April 2014

These short stories are compelling reading even though some are bizarre and weird!
Perhaps not a good idea to read at bedtime if you are of a nervous disposition.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent commentary, 17 Jan. 2014

If you want a clearer understanding of Paul's letters to the Colossians and to Philemon this is the book to read! It is readable and reliable. Phi Arthur explains the apostle's words and then shows how they relate to believers today.
