5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful book. Very unusual in its presentation and content, 6 Feb. 2015

This is a fascinating, wonderful book. Very unusual in its presentation and content, with an open outlook on all aspects of contemporary quilting, it also includes a wealth of information on the online quilting world. The virtual and real world are so beautifully integrated, which makes it a truly contemporary book. I strongly recommend it.

Victorian Patchwork
Victorian Patchwork
by Freda Parker
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read!, 22 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Victorian Patchwork (Hardcover)
Unlike more recent books, this book stands out for the breadth of information it contains. I really enjoy reading it; Freda has a lovely writing style. Contemporary books tend to cover a limited, highly commercialised segment of the world of quilts, leading readers to believe that you should be using quilters cottons, precut fabric in designer ranges etc. This book, first published in 1991, is tremendously liberating as it dates from before our prescriptive era. I love it, I feel more free for reading this book, as well as more connected with the long tradition that is quilting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, inspiring book, 9 Nov. 2013

This is one of my absolute favourite sewing books. So beautifully laid out and designed, this is a larger than average book with an unusually generous spirit. I love reading through the chapters and I am learning so much on the way. There is also a dvd which shows the draping process in great detail. I recommend this book to people who want to gain an understanding of the draping process and about fabric as an artistic medium in general. What a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine book for the folk song enthusiast, 27 Jan. 2013

This is a lovely book. It has a great introduction describing local life and customs as observed by the collectors during their visits to the Appalachian mountains as well as a great collection of songs. I enjoy discovering and singing different versions of songs well known in the U.K. today, as well as gems that have been waiting to be (re-) discovered. Most ballads and songs are presented with different versions of melody lines and lyrics.

I just love this book!! I also recommend Volume One. If you lead a singing group, then you will find songs in here that are great fun to sing. Some of these songs have become firm favourites with my groups! Thank you very much, Ms Barnwell, you are truly inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Winter House, 2 Dec. 2009
This review is from: The Winter House (Paperback)
This is without doubt one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I read it on the train traveling from Belgium to the North of England and when I arrived it was as if I had been living inside the book for all that time. Read it. Thank you, Nicci Gerrard.
