5.0 out of 5 stars Alright Pet?, 26 Jan. 2013

Brenda Blethyn is the most wonderful actress. She is simply sensational in this series from her lovely accent to her dowdy clothes as she clomps along like a female Colombo at times. Her side-kick Joe is excellent and the rest of the ensemble especially Kenny, Holly and the rather revolting Billy the pathologist are wonderful. I have such a longing to visit Newcastle and surrounds now - it looks so bleak but beautiful in parts thanks to the terrific camera work that bring the stories together. I can't go past a British Crime series - the US ones are so irritating with everyone in them looking like supermodels - the Brits do it so well with character actors who actually look like real people. The stories themselves are fascinating with Vera's complicated private life woven through the narrative. I highly recommend this series and look forward to series 3... :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Got me in from the opening scenes..., 26 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Low Winter Sun [DVD] (DVD)
I stumbled across this DVD while reading an article on Mark Strong. What a gripping experience - from the opening scenes I was mesmerised and had to watch both episodes in one night. Not for the faint-hearted - there is some pretty confronting violence but is not gratuitous and moves the plot along and there is a lot of swearing but it works... Mark Strong is, as always, magnificent - he could just stand and recite vegetables from a list and would deserve an award. The unexpected gem for me was the discovery that Brian McCardie was also starring in it who I loved in a small role in Case Histories. What a revelation he has turned out to be - a fantastic actor I will now follow with great interest. Edinburgh looks scary and bleak which gives a macabre atmosphere to the entire film. I felt so connected to the main two characters it was heart wrenching to watch them slowly unravel. I thoroughly recommend this DVD... :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ta Guv..., 28 Nov. 2012

Living in Australia we got "A Touch of Frost" on our free to air TV sporadically. I always loved Inspector Frost - the epitome of the British Police dramas - all "Ooh I'd love a cuppa, love", to "Yes, Guv - straight away Guv..."
The British shows are just so much better than the US stuff - mainly because of the fantastic range of British actors available who look like ordinary real people and therefore are so much more believable. David Jason is an amazing actor - he can make you laugh and weep all in the space of an hour and the regular supporting cast are exceptional.
To be able to luxuriate in all 15 series at my leisure has been such a treat. I'm also amazed at the number of episodes we didn't see here. So in between the old favourites, there will suddenly jump out one I've never seen - such a treat. I also love recognising some of the actors in their earlier careers, usually the villain, and celebrating that they have now become important character actors in their own right...
And the technology! This dates the show obviously but it's fun to remember back to when a mobile phone was the size of a brick and a computer just had green lines of writing crawling across the screen...
Highly recommend this to any one who loves a good police procedural....

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Hardy - star quality, 26 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered this film purely on the grounds that both Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch were in it. Living in Australia, I knew nothing about the story at all.
What a fantastic treat this turned out to be! Tom Hardy is the best actor of his generation and both he and Benedict Cumberbatch will surely go on to greater heights as Britains best character actors... I couldn't fault either performance and found myself holdng my breath as Stuart's story was slowly revealed. I can thoroughly recommend this film - why don't these types of movies get a general release instead of the rubbish we are subjected to these days... :))

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent adaption..., 25 Mar. 2012

I loved this film - saw it at the cinema and was blown way by the stillness - it really is a "lean forward in your chair" movie - requires your attention to absorb all the nuances of the dialogue...
Having been a huge fan of the book and the TV series - who would have thought that Smiley could be anyone other than Alex Guiness? Well Gary Oldman does a marvelleous job and gives another dimension to the Smiley character. Tom Hardy was mesmerising as always - who can take their eyes off this amazing young man. My only small gripe was changing the Peter Guillaume character - I won't spoil it any further - but it was a bit perplexing. Benedict Cumberbatch though, is always a joy to watch so it didn't really matter.
The Blu-ray version is fantastic and the extras are mainly interviews but there are a couple of deleted scenes which could have been kept in the film for a bit of a deeper insight into the characters.

My Family & Other Animals [2005] [DVD]

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful adaption of an old favourite..., 25 Mar. 2012

I grew up reading the Gerald Durrell books and know this particular one very well. This adaption was like an visiting an old friend...
The film basically flits from one vignette to another as described in the book together with quirky music to match each scene. The actors are very good and Imelda Staunton is marvelleous. If you are a fan of My Family & Other Animals you will enjoy this film very much...
