3.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Meandering., 29 Dec. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not enough war. I quite like these books, but the author wanders off constantly down rarely revisited cul-de-sacs. All tension is lost as we veer away from the main action. At this speed there will be twenty books before the war is half over.
And enough about "Zelda and the Spaceways", a juvenile title for what appears to be the only show anyone in the hundreds of worlds Alliance watches. Not realistic and takes you out of the plot.
That said, the actual war when the author bothers to get around to it is interesting, well written and exciting. I am not sure whether I will persist with this series or not. Hence three stars. The books need to do what it says on the tin.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little bit YA, 28 May 2016

A young adult book. Nothing wrong with that but not what I was expecting.

Moon Over Soho: The Second PC Grant Mystery

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as first book., 28 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Amusing at times. Confusing though as to which case we were talking about (others have noted this), not a very interesting case generally. Overshadowed by the advent of the big bad and as a result felt too much like half a story. Also absence of Nightingale to put pressure of novice was a little too contrived. The trope of a wise wizard who is always unavailable, or for reasons unknown won't give the answer is tiresome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever and complicated, 21 May 2016

Complicated but clever, ends a bit abruptly, well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark plt, sags in middle., 3 Jan. 2016

A good but dark plot. Seems to sag in the middle though, and keeps covering the same ground. Good for fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars Aliens and humans... GROUP HUG!, 3 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not so much a narrative as a series of "learning point" encounters. Aliens and humans hug and love and learn from each other. It's lovely... and dull, episodic, unlikely, lacks a plot and in essence is a thinly disguised lecture on being nice.

Black Mountain: Alex Hunter 4

3.0 out of 5 stars Good action; but the Alex out of control, 19 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Decent follow up. Found myself wondering at a couple of characters motivations; one who needlessly walked into a situation that was so obviously dangerous, only a drugged up deranged fool would do it. The second is more serious as it relates to a principal character essentially betraying their nation and people... without, I thought, sufficient motivation.
Good action; but the Alex out of control, out of his mind and essentially being more wild animal than reasoning human got a little tiresome.
Not the strongest in the series but I will read more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good omen for the rest of the series, 2 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Almost exactly the same as the preceding book. They ended the book no further forward and knowing no more than they did at the end of the previous book. Not a good omen for the rest of the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Have enjoyed the series, 2 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Have enjoyed the series. This was the weakest. A couple of minor who cares filler events, the kidnapping and the border patrol action. I started to skip pages, especially during the kidnap, as is it was a couple of minor characters. When you've gone for massive intergalactic war, and then a bit of small scale refugee action it feel retrograde.
On another note the Alliance's politicians are so relentlessly duplicitous that Jack's loyalty to the Alliance govt must surely be exhausted. They clearly need sweeping away and at some point any reasonable person would realise "they're trying to kill me."
A good series but I'll wait for the tanks to refuel before buying the next.
