5.0 out of 5 stars My "bible", 28 July 2012
This book is the seminal work on Jamaican use of English...indispensible to linguists and historians alike with an interest in the culture of the Americas. My copy sits with my most prized books.

Jamaica Surveyed: Plantation Maps and Plans of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
by B. W. Higman
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to find accolades..., 28 July 2012
to describe the monumental contribution of this book to world history of the Americas. Superb, easy to read, good graphics and essential reading for historians and those fascinated by Jamaica and it's amazing history and place in the British Empire. For non-historians and visitors, just plain interesting, you could almost take it along as guide as you drive around Jamaica.

4.0 out of 5 stars the nuts and bolt of Jamaican 'fisherfolk's' life, 28 July 2012
The editor of this book did not do justice to Mr. Tame's talents but Tony's razor wit, humour and eye for detail still shine through. My four stars are not for him but the editor, Tony would have been 5 and the editor 2 stars. Jamaica remains a place of humour and contradiction and our 'fisherfolk' are hardly naive in the true sense of the word. The dog's character is truly ingenious. Be advised that the editor is misleading you...this book is not a 'collection' it is a narative...but (s)he couldn't decide what genre was being edited. Read it anyway, a wonderful view of one of Jamaica's most occult sectors of society.

The White Witch of Rosehall
by Herbert G. de Lisser
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.35

4.0 out of 5 stars The lure of the White Witch...., 28 July 2012
This is the book, based on the life of a real woman, that fanned my first real interest in Jamaican history. Full of the contradictions of Jamaican 19th century life. A standard of Jamaican story telling that sets the scene of Jamaican plantation life in an elegantly dark way, just as the island was 'elegantly dark' in all it's blazing heat, beauty and the looming dangers of slave/master liaison and rebellion. My role in the dance production based on this book was the greatest of my dance career and I could 'feel the book' during every performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely enthralling, 28 July 2012
If you want to know Jamaica, you have to read this book. It is written by a unique and contented woman who was happily married and willing to use her good judgement and joie de vivre in conducting her daily life. A historic and historical document of great grace, humour and breadth.

5.0 out of 5 stars the real deal - not for the squeamish or those with head in sand, 28 July 2012
This book pulls no punches. It is a graphic and horrifying view of slavery in Jamaica. It is based on a diary from a western Jamaican estate and is factual. I'm proud of all Afro-Jamaicans who have managed to read this work. It is a priceless document and I could hardly read it ...very painful. Represents the same insanity present in war situations the world over, required reading for advanced historians of the Americas. Slavery was a kind of war, with Africa almost as guilty as Europe and America. The best-selling book of the University of the West Indies Press.

Jamaica Labrish
Jamaica Labrish
by Louise Bennett
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars The first Lady of Jamaican comedy, 28 July 2012
This review is from: Jamaica Labrish (Paperback)
This book is the soul of Jamaican dialect, if you can read dialect, and she makes it quite easy to read, I get my phonetic inspiration from her, this book is a laugh. I used to pick it up to cheer up myself. Nothing of Jamaica's foibles escapes her eye. A Jamaican that can certainly laugh at herself and her country. Louise is the pioneer of Jamaican dialect. She took her English Royal School of theatre and drama training and turned it into fantastic showmanship and warmth of spirit on stage. One of Jamaica's great cultural ambassadors and story tellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary before Florence, 28 July 2012
This is the companion volume to Lady Nugent's Journal as every story has two sides, especially that of Jamaica and it's women. Here is the lady whose practices formed the basis of Florence Nightingale's fame. Florence heard of Mary's protocols for fighting pestilences of the day and they made Florence famous but she wouldn't employ Mary. Mary's spirit remains alive in Jamaican women who continue to innovate to survive. Another indispensible book to historians of the Americas and women. This book, the Dictionary of Jamaican English and Lady Nugent's Journal sit side by side as prizes on my shelf.
