5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tape Dispensing Gun From A Good Brand, 12 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I frequently have to seal up parcels and boxes - it was getting a drag trying to bite through brown parcel tape, or gumming up the blades of my scissors cutting the tape, so when Amazon offered me this tape dispensing gun, I was only too pleased to take them up on it. This is a very well made and efficient tape dispenser that works a dream, is simple to load up and although I have no need to do so, will also work in low-temperature environments, too. It's sturdy, will no doubt last for ages - it seems clog-resistant, too. I would recommend Scotch tape as well - cheaper stuff tears and clogs, and although Scotch tape is a little more, the time and effort it saves is worth the extra outlay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Toussaint - Gone, but Not Forgotten, 10 Aug. 2016

This review is from: American Tunes (Audio CD)
Allen Toussaint's posthumously released 'American Tunes' is a timely reminder of his immense contribution not only to New Orleans music in particular, but to post-war popular music in general. His elegant, articulate piano playing on a wide range of material, from pop standards through to less obvious choices is thrilling and often witty, too, and throughout the New Orleans Jazz and musical Gumbo Funk percolates up. This is a beautifully recorded, magnificently rendered album that deserves pride of place in any self-respecting, discerning music fan's record collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tight Funk, Melodic Grooves - This is The Good Stuff, 10 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ikebe Shakedown [VINYL] (Vinyl)
As I get older, I find myself more and more drawn to instrumental music. No sappy lyrics and fake profundity to wade through. Ikebe Shakedown seem to take their musical inspiration from the soundtrack of 1970s 'Blaxploitation' movies - tightly-arranged but funky grooves, excellent musicianship, guitar snaking in and around the funk. It benefits from having the volume whacked up, when the many subtleties and counter melodies bubble to the surface. Retro styled it may be, but it sounds contemporary to me. Impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Value and Excellent IlluminationBulbs, 10 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Writing a review of a light bulb is a bit like one of those essays you get set when you're a kid in junior school - 'doing the washing up". What's there to say? Well, here goes. LED bulbs aren't cheap, but they last an age, and will save you a princely sum in electricity bills over time. They don't get hot, either, so you can actually touch them. Illumination strength is fine, too. Buying them in a bulk pack like this gives you good savings, too. A highly recommended, essential product

5.0 out of 5 stars A Splendid, Endlessly rewarding set from a modern master., 10 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When confronted with the collected body of Paul Simon's solo work, it is somewhat staggering to attempt to consider the scope and range, and the sheer consistency of his music. Back in the Simon & Garfunkel days, he was always a master of the memorable melody, coupled with incisive lyricism. As a soloist, he broadened out his musical bases - since 'Graceland', in the mid-eighties, he's embraced an even wider range of musical styles - incorporating African township styles, Brazilian poly rhythms, and much more besides - but never at the expense of the sweet melody. One of his early peaks was 'There Goes Rhymin' Simon', with superb tracks such as 'Loves Me Like A Rock' and the magnificent, stirring 'American Tune'. But it didn't end there. 'Still Crazy After All These Years' has the superb title track and the witty, sardonic 'Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover'. But then there are underrated gems like 'One Trick Pony' and 'Hearts And Bones', less commercially successful but still full of real quality songs and arrangements. This 'Complete' set is a constant joy, and ridiculously good value. The packaging is excellent. Don't spend too long thinking about it. This is a splendid, endlessly rewarding set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addictive Caramel Loveliness, 10 Aug. 2016

Blimey, this stuff is addictive. I cannot open my fridge without dipping a teaspoon in the gorgeously sticky sweet pot of more-ishness. It'll be a great ingredient for a banoffee pie, but is lovely spread on toast or a scone. Resistance is futile - I may have to go to Dulce de Leche rehab.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Product That Actually WORKS!, 10 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have reviewed many products on the Amazon site designed to stop the bane of my dog-owning existence - how to stop my Border Collie from pulling on the lead. I've tried Canny Collars, Halti collars - products which seek to restrain the dog's pulling instincts by using a loop which goes around the dog's snout. Now, these items do work, after a fashion, but my dog will always seek to paw the loop off his muzzle, because it is an alien and unpleasant sensation for him. He settles in after about fifteen minutes, but he's never relaxed with it, and although he stops pulling after a while, the first part of a walk is a struggle for me, trying to restrain a strong and very wilful dog. Enough of the preamble. A few weeks ago, Amazon recommended the following product Stop Pull Front Leading Harness fitting dogs weighing between 25 - 65 lbs (11 - 29 kg) Girth Size 21 - 32 inches (53 - 81 cms) COFFEE BEAN, and I bought one, not necessarily thinking that it would work, more with a feeling of "might as well give it a go". Despite my skepticism, it WORKED! Walks ever since have been an absolute pleasure, the dog is under my complete control, and he is far less stressed and discomfited - happy all round. If there was one criticism of that particular product, it is that the body straps are a bit basic, and need a bit of padding to reassure me that they aren't causing the dog too much discomfort. So, when I was offered the Pet Safe Walk Deluxe Harness, which works on the same principle, I thought I would give it a try. It's very similar to the other product, but it scores over that by dint of having padded straps. It needs to fit snugly, and the dog lead attaches to the front. I don't know how the science of it works, but has stopped my dog's pulling immediately, and gives me control over his direction of travel. Plus, it looks attractive - the one I was sent is a kind of turquoise colour, and as you can see, Buster looks very smart in it. He's quite chunky for a Border Collie - this was a medium, and the dog is on the upper side of that size range, but it doesn't cut into him, and he's very happy to wear it.

Now all I need is a small one for my Jack Russell / Lakeland Terrier Cross. Great product - really worth trying if your dog is an inveterate 'puller'.

4.0 out of 5 stars These Pills Do Seem To Have Had A Positive Effect, 10 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I am the owner of two dogs - a Border Collie and a Jack Russell / Lakeland Terrier cross. Both can suffer from stress - like many owners, events like Guy Fawkes night can be particularly frightening for the dogs, with loud bangs and out-of-the-ordinary sounds causing them great discomfiture. The Border Collie is very skittish in particular, and the most highly-strung of the pair - to list the range of his fears and foibles would take up far more space than we have here. Suffice to say, therefore, that I have, for some time, looked at ways to ameliorate his anxieties. This ranges from lavender scented sprays, which has been partly effectual, but this was the first time I have used a form of medication. YuCALM for dogs comes in pack sizes of 30, 60 and 120 lozenge-shaped tablets, and they come in blister packs. Their composition includes fish oils, lemon balm and L-Theanine, the latter for the production of serotonin, and supporting the production of dopamine. The pills certainly appeal - my dogs have been known to spit out medication when they have occasionally been prescribed, and I have noticed, after using them for a few days, a slight change in his stress levels - when visitors knock, or the postman makes their call, his barking is not quite so incessant. It's hard to tell over the short space of time I've been using them, but I am cautiously optimistic. Also, he has had no adverse reactions to the pills (stomach upsets, etc). So far, so good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Range of Guitar Sounds and Tones Mask Some So-So Songs, 7 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Hill (Audio CD)
James Walbourne has made a fine name for himself as a guitar player, working with the Pretenders in recent years, to great effect. He's also a singer songwriter. 'The Hill' is a fine album from a guitar player's point of view - Walbourne uses a variety of guitars - six and 12 string electrics, and his expert shuffling of his pack of guitar tones and exemplary playing is frequently thrilling. He's not a bad vocalist, either, it's just that I find much of his songs lacking lyrically. I feel bad offering up what reads like harsh critique, but ultimately I feel this album promises more than it delivers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gem From A Talented Songwriter In Danger of Being Forgotten, 7 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Late, Great Alex Glasgow was a real giant amongst North Country chroniclers of working class life. He is most renowned for his version of the traditional Tyneside Folk tune, 'Dance Ti Tha Daddy', the theme tune to the 1970s BBC TV drama series, 'When The Boat Comes In', which gave full free rein to his delighting in Geordie dialect. But there was much more to him that that. His songs embraced themes such as Trade Unionism, Working Class life, racism and capitalist exploitation, all sung is a rich Geordie voice. The album also features some fine brass, woodwind and string arrangements.

Glasgow died in 2001 in his relocated home of Freemantle, Australia, where he had moved for health reasons in 1981. He was a fine, richly talented singer-songwriter that is danger of being forgotten - this album is not easily come by, but it is a little gem.
