4.0 out of 5 stars Miraculous except for the conclusion., 15 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In "Promised you a miracle "Beckett looks at Britain in the early years of Margaret Thatcher's rule and makes a case for them being key hinge years in Britain's modern history. These were years he argues when something of the new individualism, tolerance and business minded Britain began to bubble up; in some cases stimulated by the new government and in others by deeper changes in society. Beckett's great strength is that he is aware that different possibilities could have emerged from the turbulent early eighties and that the outcomes of the period were largely contingent. Moreover he notes that the losers too have made their mark not just on our history but by implication our present and our future too. I would have awarded the book five stars but it is let down by a somewhat timorous conclusion which seems afraid to do more than gesture towards answering the questions he raises. Overall however it is a well written retrieval of some often overlooked early eighties harbingers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential volume., 25 Aug. 2015

This is easily the best single volume monograph on Britain in the period 1945-1997. It is clear, sufficiently detailed and written in a fluent style which encourages fast progress.

This belt is ok looking but ultimately not very good quality for the price. There must be better out there for the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars dangerous on stone or concrete in the wet., 9 Jun. 2014

These are ok in all areas except the sole but are let down by very poor wet grip on stone and concrete. I have fallen over three times in them on roads that I run in other shoes with no problem. I will be going back to my default option Nike next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changing meanings of marriage., 15 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book aims at a history of love and marriage in Britain between around the the end of the first war and the election of Thatcher. Its central thesis is that marriage evolved from being a socially necessary and pragmatic mechanism for citizenship and parenthood to be being a vehicle for exaggerated hopes of self fulfillment via love. This change Langhamer contends undermined the institution and led to the later high divorce rates and indeed the current unprecedented low rates of betrothal. The book makes excellent use of individual stories to create a convincing theory of marriage and its relationships with love, sex, politics and the economy. I would however have liked it to have included a bit more on the post 1979 period when marriage has been recast again in the context of increased economic insecurity, individualism and sexualisation of society.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC v ITV, 29 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the third volume in what is becoming the greatest work of narrative history ever written by an Englishman. It covers the "hinge" years of 1957-59 when something of the country Britain was to become was increasingly clear. Thus we have the tensions of paternalism versus individualism, the increasing appeal of consumerism as a way of life and the rebuilding of our cities by naive modernists. In a way the different visons of the future were embodied by the BBC and the new commercial televison the one representing our elitist, intellectual, cautious and paternalistic side the other being more materialist, youthful and demotic. It is the dialectical interplay of these two visions which Kynaston synthesises with his genius.

Dog Locomotion and Gait Analysis
Dog Locomotion and Gait Analysis
by Curtis M. Brown
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars How it really is,, 30 May 2013
This is the book on how the dogs structure works to create efficient movement. If you want to know what structures enable efficient locomotion in dogs this is the book for you. It also proves scientifically why the show world has got it so wrong in their breed standards.

I had chronic prostatis which had not responded to treatment from my GP so I tried this more in hope than expectation but after a couple of weeks of using this product the prostatis was relieved. Consequently I highly recommend this product to anyone with prostate problems.

This review is from: Seiko Men's Watch SGEE41P2 (Watch)
I have owned this watch for three years and found it to be the most practical and reliable watch i have ever owned. I also own two Swiss watches costing many times the price of this Seiko and neither have been as reliable or hard wearing. I really cannot praise this watch highly enough; long may Seiko continue to make watches of this quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essays on a resurgent South America., 21 Mar. 2013
This book is a series of essays on the emergence of Hugo Chavez's Venezuela and his Bolivarian movement. It is written in Ali's usual accessible but erudite style and has interesting insights into Chavez's influences and those such as Evo Morales who he has inspired. I have not given it five stars as it is not comprehensive and because the hardback edition is marred by small print which makes it harder to read especially Ali's extensive footnotes. The publishers Verso need to address this problem as it blights other of their books too.
