1.0 out of 5 stars Not for sci-fi fans, 7 July 2016

Not for sci-fi fans. I love time travel stories but this is terrible. I could not even finish it -and I rarely give up on a book - it has to be dreadful for that to happen. If however you wanted to read a mills and boon type book set in the 1920s with vampires then this is for you. I do not recommend it at all and will never read another book by this author.

There is a chunk of the book missing so I had to try and work out what had happened. Hardy's writing is brilliant as expected but the plot is rather odd and it is hard in 2016 to work out what all the fuss is about which causes a scandal. I personally would not bother to read this ever again. It is OK but nothing to get excited about. It is about a man who sells his wife and child and then regrets it. He becomes Mayor of Casterbridge and is doing well until he persuades another man to stop and work for him.

The best Kate Morton book so far and one of the best books I have ever read. The story is about a small boy in 1933 who goes missing and is never heard from again and a policewoman in 2003 who wants to find out what happened to him. The story has great characters who all have back stories which affect their actions. There are sub plots and side stories. I recommend you don't read too many reviews just start reading and go with it and let it all unfold as the author wants it to and hopefully you will love it as much as I did. Very intelligent story so well put together.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is an unbelievable and boring time travel story, 24 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an unbelievable and boring time travel story. A man has been going to a club for years. One day he gets told it is a time travel portal to the actual 1800s and it is vital for keeping the world on track. The next minute the guy says bye - you are in charge now. Also the stories are basically all concerning famous historical events which someone has to step in and do according to the history books. It is a dull history book not a science fiction story.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great time travel story, 24 May 2016

This is a great time travel story. The beginning I found rather boring as it is very American and I have no idea what cleats are - nor why you would play a game with biscuits (which you would eat in the uk). However once the time travel happens it is an intelligent story with believable explanations for the time travel. It also covers many of the hazards that would occur such as what if there was something in the place you travelled to or what happens if you meet yourself in the past or future. A group of friends get sent into the past by accident in a storm and try to get back home again.

2.0 out of 5 stars unpleasant people make unpleasant story, 29 Mar. 2016

Unlikeable characters who all seem very self centred and sleep with their brother or sisters partners because they can. I really did not care why Mia died or about her sister. Nothing pleasant about this book. I will not read any more books by this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars You end up feeling sorry for the monster as everyone is scared of him on sight and he is sad and lonely, 28 Jan. 2016

This review is from: Frankenstein (Kindle Edition)
Very wordy story about a man who creates a monstrous looking being -gives life to it and then instantly hates it. Why did he not think about what would happen if he succeeded ? Surely he could have made a nicer looking being? You end up feeling sorry for the monster as everyone is scared of him on sight and he is sad and lonely. He takes revenge on his creator by killing those he loves. The story is very improbable - how come the monster can hear people in a house well enough to learn the language but they never hear him? How does he manage to follow his creator all the way from Switzerland to Scotland? Why does the creator tell no-one and help get the monster caught right in the beginning? Frankenstein (who is the creator not the monster) spends far to long feeling sorry for himself and being miserable. I have no sympathy for him at all.

Easy to read story written from his point of view and from hers. They meet when he is a bar tender and she is trying to buy alcohol but is under age. Years later they end up living next door to each other. Will they each overcome the hang-ups from their past and get together?

4.0 out of 5 stars Story of one man who survived alone in Warsaw after ..., 9 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Story of one man who survived alone in Warsaw after all the other Jews were taken to the concentration camps and the city was destroyed. He was saved from getting on the transport as he was recognised as a gifted pianist. He describes the times from the beginning of the war and how things became harder and harder for the Jews with the setting up of the ghetto. He is saved in the end by a German who secretly gives him food and items to keep him warm. It is written very matter of factly - the emotions would be too difficult to cope with otherwise. At the end of the book is an extract from another man's diary from the same time.
