3.0 out of 5 stars interesting subject but descends into melodrama, 4 Aug. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Suitable Lie, A (Paperback)
I wanted to like this novel as it deals with a topical and important subject. I also know the area- Ayrshire- in which it is set. It is worth reading but I felt something was missing. I felt the developments towards the end were overly dramatic and solved the problem of the disturbed and flawed female character. However, the author tackles a difficult subject and deserves praise for this.

The Pembleton Myth
The Pembleton Myth
by Prue Phillipson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.34

5.0 out of 5 stars Life in a provincial town in the 50s beautifully observed., 4 Aug. 2017
This review is from: The Pembleton Myth (Paperback)
This novel is a little reminiscent of The Casual Vacancy, in that we find ourselves in a fictional town in England and the rural surroundings and gain a strong sense of place. The town is called Midcaster and the story is set on one day in September. However, the focus here is on the planning department and the many diverse characters associated with it. The era is the late1950s and I was reminded of the works of Keith Waterhouse and Kingsley Amis at times. There is a whole galaxy of characters who interact with each other. One element of the novel is the office politics and intrigue but another is the insights we are given of the family members attached to the workers of the Planning Department .
Of particular interest is the historical era - the only female staff are the secretaries and the personal assistants, women with children rarely worked outside the home and the physical discipline of children was not uncommon. The office day at that time was structured with a rigid hierachy and an hour long lunch break.
I love the evocative descriptions and the depiction of characters; Paul Pembleton is the central character and the discrepancy between the Myth which has grown up around him in the office and, to an extent, at home and the real, flawed and vulnerable man is subtly developed.
You really gain a sense of knowing the town and the people by the end and want to know what happens next.
Throw in humour and you have a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read, 12 April 2017

This review is from: Truly Madly Guilty (Hardcover)
I love her books, they are lengthy and you could say the plot lines are slow but to me this builds up tension. Her characters are carefully developed and believable and a sense of place is built up gradually. I really enjoyed this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing but worth a read, 16 Oct. 2016

Thought this would be a psychological thriller but became a crime novel .
Very powerful opening pages.
Once the twist was revealed early on some dramatic suspense was lost .

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 16 Oct. 2016
This was rather disappointing as I found the writing stilted and clunky
I kept going and it improved a bit but I found it hard to believe in the characters or care much about them

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, explores the ripple effect of an act of violence on a woman and a family, 9 Oct. 2016

This review is from: The Mother (Hardcover)
This was very well written and kept me gripped. Explores themes of grief, violence, gangs, life in the inner city, adolescence, the family and criminal justice. Apart from one brief incident, it felt realistic. You care about the central character who is beautifully drawn. Best novel I have read for awhile.
